Tales from the Crypt: Global Gems from the OS Morgue

Rate: 32 Flag

Earth

                                                                                            pat-on-mars  Earth at Night

It's been a long political year in the U. S. of A. and I, for one, am feeling quite enervated.  And working the midnight shift here in the Open Salon morgue is probably not prescribed in the Materia Medica as a sure fire rejuvenator. But lo and behold! in the course of my 2 A.M. rambles, I came across this wondrous image of the earth posted by pat-on-mars . Inspired, I kept discovering pieces from around the world which quite distracted me from my parochial, quotidian concerns, as I hope they do you.  What impressed me most is the range of knowledge, wit, erudition and expansive, eclectic interests displayed by our fellow Open Salonistas here.

The selections are, of course, arbitrary.  They all portray some part of the world outside the U.S. Each includes an arresting image.  And, at least, for me, they  illuminate  some aspect of the relevant country or culture that may not be found in a travelogue. (You can click the hotlinks or the pictures themselves to go to the original post.)

Procopius serves us the Ottoman army besieging Vienna with an amuse-bouche on the side!  Matthew, the wandering academic, courses from the Balkans through West Africa to China. Where next?  Painterroy is not only our docent in Paris but teaches us French as well.

Ancient cultures. Lotf Ali's  exquisite, bittersweet story about Tehran and SmithBarney's love for the native peoples of Eastern India and barely suppressed rage at their destruction book-end pretend_farmer's ode to the art of China and Sanjuro55's wonderful piece on haiku and Japanese death poems.

Artsfish                                                                                                                     Sally Swift   Australia                                                                                                        My Israeli Family

The Not-so-Old World. Susanne's piece is a moveable feast. Try her  ribollita recipe (we did --vegetarian style-- yumm.).  In all his diaries, Rob displays a non-picture postcard eye and flair for the unusual. Is there anywhere Artsfish has not been and photographed for our delight? Her Australian sojourn after 9-11 is particularly touching. And I was moved by Sally Swift's piece for what it was, without sub-text, an evocation of a happy reunion of an extended, global family.

And, finally, Oy Canada ('twere always thus -- last but not least, Canada).  I wish I could honestly say it was a close contest between Cam Battley and the actual winner as to who would be the better companion for traversing that vast winter wonderland. But it wasn't.  I mean I would personally hang with Cam, who is charming, erudite and articulate , and my fellow canines Angel and Russ; but on those endless, cold nights on the frozen tundra the public voted overwhelmingly for the eventual winner ..... Toronto's own:

If I have missed any worthy candidates, pray be not offended.  Just put them in the Comments field.  As Gonorrhea said to her aged P.:

How have I offended?
All's  not offense that indiscretion finds
And dotage terms so.

Oh, my, I always knew you were a lovely writer, but it seems when heaping praise on others, you're positively otherworldly! Thank you so much for these links to places I've yet to visit. There is simply not enough time; I've only just begun; my lack of knowledge is staggering - all the usual (suspect) excuses apply. I'll just spend a day or two lapping all this up.
I need more hours in the day! I could read OS archives for years. Paws up.
I am very fond of the world of "Gamour." But it's all good. Of course, it IS missing He Who Is Handsome, but I can live with that. His ego is out of control.
I love your "tales from the crypt" series, please keep it up - you have a good nose for it!
hmm, I left a comment earlier . but it looks like comments are buggy again.

Anyway - Fabulous! I love your "tales from the crypt " series - you have such a good nose for it - and thanks for the notice of my Aussie post, I think I just got a "CCC's PICK"!

I can't wait to check all these gems after the little ones go to bed.
Yeah, I'd choose Gamour over me, too. [chuckle]
You're terrific, Tri-C.
Thanks for the pic/pick, CCC!

Seriously, this is one thing missing from the way Open Salon runs. It's a set of highlights from the past 24 to 48 hours, with very brief list of greatest hits off to the side. But really, there's a lot of richness and connections that just go by unless someone (i.e. CCC) puts it all together.
Doggie gets big hug and pats. gooooood doggie.
Awww! Thanks. It's nice to be included and I am so glad you enjoyed the Ribollita recipe. Everyone always asks for it!

Don't miss DogWoman's new post folks, it's beyond current definitions of AWWWWWsome! Find it at http://open.salon.com/content.php?cid=32691

I don't know why it is not yet an Editor's Choice. She included Kerry's kitty after all!
Thanks so much for this, Caveat. It's like receiving a slim volume of excellent travel essays as an unexpected gift. And I am proud to be included.

To echo Liz: Booonus canis! Boooonus canis!

Wow, first Dog Woman shows two of my animals and you showcase my art and post! I wasn't feeling well but my mood is improving. Thanks!
I've bookmarked it to come back to. I always know there is a wealth of treasure here that there is no way any one person can find - it makes me crazy not to be able to read every last post from today through Day 1. Your time and effort to point me to some great treasures is well-appreciated.
Oh, this is great!
Like Kellylark, I too have bookmarked this and will come back to it.
Thank you so much.
How I wish I had more time to read all the amazing posts here on OS.
Someday soon...hopefully.

Margie.
I love it when you make these expeditions into the OS storage rooms and show us the pretty and interesting things you find there. Thank you.
Thanks all. Wow! The reception's quite overwhelming. I've enjoyed doing these, because there really is a lot of wonderful stuff to discover out there in this OS community of ours. But as Rob points out, there really isn't an easy way to track back. It takes a lot of ahem, dogwork , and then putting it together -- Oy vay! formatting with this editor is a ditch (that's gender-neutral dogspeak).

But what I really want to test is whether this sort of compilation or anthologizing induces anyone to go and read the noted posts (assuming my tastes and critical faculties aren't totally wacko). And the only way to find out would be if those of you who actually do visit these sites, rate them -- I've, of course, noted the original stats prior to posting.

Thanks again.

Wow, what an honor to be included in this pantheon! I will bookmark this post and return to it to read, once again, these gems. Thank you.
Loved this!!! Wonderful trip down memory lane and old posties!
Delicious, colorful, inspirational and so much fun!
Thanks for the shout-out, Woofman. Great layout and writeup. I really like your other selections - I learnt something new from each of them. Keep up the good work, and I am sure it *is* a lot of work. Thanks again.
This post is out of this world Woof Man. You've outdone yourself and being sleep deprived serves you well.
Wonderful gems, and wonderfuller writing. Two paw up. And Thumbed!
it was thoughtful of you to have done this and see new people dig it up at one point or another. what I liked is the idea of having done a "around the world" bouquet...feast for vicarious cybertrekkers like us, who enjoy the world from the sanctity of the fav corner in their house.

tried to fig out ur ID, cd only find caveat emptor (beware the buyer), caveat venditor (beware the seller), cave canem (beware the Dog), croce b (critic), so probably urs wd = beware the Dog critic or perhaps "beware the Dog's critique" - what do u prefer?
