Perhaps my first post back after a wonderful family get-together (much tail-wagging, drooling, chow hounding, snoozing) ought not to be an angry one. But I noticed our resident savant Rob's moderate (no names, no pack drill) appeal fell on deaf ears and our dueling docs are even further advanced in their dementia.
The proximate cause of my ire is Dr. Toots (shor, she blows her own horn a lot), whose lack of expertise in areas outside of JAMA sidebars on vaginal implants and jellyfish could be dismissed as laughable were it not used for despicable causes in deceptive ways.
That a person should use a false connection to the Holocaust to support a cause is worse than meretricious, it is beyond the pale. Herman Rosenblat has been pilloried for his fiction. Dr. Toots deserves a similar fate.
The Backstory:
In a comment to her own phlegm-hawking bomb run "Can You Guess?" she asserts : "They're intimately related, of course. On (sic) the most important things to keep in mind is that most Israelis are refugees of the Holocaust or children of refugees of the Holocaust." (Emphasis mine. Dr. Toots being inexpert in syntax and grammar as well as spelling, it is not clear what the referent of they is, but let it pass. Note the casually authoritative of course.)Padraig Colman , who is as wise as he is witty, asked her a direct question about the claim which she proceeded to obfuscate with bullshit (technical term a la Harry Frankfurt) numbers as well as a ham-handed textual change in her original assertion.
Of course, both my hermeneutic and statistical sensibilities (two of my many fields of expertise, as my loyal readers know by now) are outraged.
The Text Change:
Her original assertion which Padraig challenged: "most Israelis are refugees of the Holocaust or children of refugees of the Holocaust".
Her response after an attempted dazzle with BS numbers (more on that later): "almost the entire Jewish population of the country is refugees or descendants of refugees. "
Huh? What happened to the Holocaust -- perhaps the most emotionally charged and symbolically potent single word in the language and fraudulently used by her here to lend power to an untruth?
And how did "Israelis" change to "Jewish population"?
She lost them and hoped no one would notice. But Detective Dawg here stays up nights not for nought. These words were used falsely to attempt to achieve a base purpose.
The Numbers Fudge:
She then proceeds to give a slew of numbers (with an offhand citation, no link) which nowhere supports her own assertion regarding Holocaust refugees. So she then slide steps into Russian pogroms, Communist persecutions, alien invasions (known to statisticians as the "kitchen sink maneuver"). But the Holocaust connection just cannot stand, thus the lame ending "the entire Jewish population is refugees". And the price of tea in China is...?
The facts are as follows ( data derived slogging through the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics site; the Wikipedia article on Israeli demographics provides a good summary):
- The current (2007) population of Israel is 7.25 million, with 5.5 million Jews.
- 2.6 million or 37% of the population are self-defined Ashkenazim (i.e. "European" Jews). Clearly, only they could be counted as Holocaust related. So her claim ("most Israelis are Holocaust refugees or children etc.") fails at the outset.
- They are 47% of the Jewish population. So even here her claim fails.
- There were 400,000 Jews in Mandatory Palestine by 1939 as a result of the Five Aliyahs. These cannot be counted as either refugees or Holocaust related.
- By 1950, pretty much the end of Holocaust related immigration, the population of Jews was 1.2 million. Of this 800,000 increase, at least half were Mizrahim and Sephardim expelled from Arab countries after 1948 (ref. Tony Judt and others.)
- So at most 400,000 Jews could claim Holocaust related status in 1950. At the average birth-death rate increase of 1.5% per annum (a source of great concern to Ashkenazim) in 2008 this group may number 1,000,000 at most.
- This is less than 20% of the Jews in Israel, less than 14% of all Israelis.
- All the other crap Dr.Toots threw out is pure eyewash, to mix metaphors.
What can one do with this? Prove Toots plays fast and loose with facts? Will alter text and weasel word and scream and shout and hold her breath till she's blue rather than admit she's wrong or flat out lying? That's a larf, tell us something we don't know.
For one thing, along the lines of Rob's treatise, it's a shot across Toots' bow that there are other real experts out there, whose bullshit detectors aren't dead. (There's even, apparently, another old school tie guy calling her on her execrable rhetoric.)
But this post primarily has to do with the gravity of her offense. The Holocaust as fact and symbol is so powerful, so evil, so horrifying, so ONE, that it adjudicates the moral standing of those who would pronounce upon it. To invoke the Shoah falsely, for private purpose or pecuniary gain, is to place yourself outside the pale of civilized public discourse. It belittles the Shoah, it demeans it, it gives comfort to the deniers, it is anathema.

What I wanted to point out was that Israel broke the ceasefire first by its incursion into Gaza and sudden restriction of track traffic into Gaza from 3,000 trucks a day to 20. I understand that they are blocking humanitarian aid now.
Also the fact that, according to the IDF, there have been 20 Isarelis killed by Gazan bombs since 2001 and their response seems all out of proportion.
Thanks for allowing me to get this off my chest!
o'stephanie- From what I've seen the past few days the apology was nothing but pure and utter bullshit. She's making these posts to directly antagonize comments and site visits; and sadly she's getting it. I am, however, actually surprised to see that she deleted a fact that you presented. I was under the impression she only deleted personal attacks.
When I first started reading her stuff I liked it because I saw her as spunky and rude. Knowing now that she doesn't actually address the difficult comments turns things around completely.
Thanks for letting us know what you had to say, though. I was wondering about that.
Later, HF
I tol'you not to eat tinsel off the tree.

I raise a cup but I'm staying outta this'un.
Thank you for making note of my earlier contribution to this affray, but for one thing -- why do you think I'm a guy ;-)?
(Emphatically rated.)
Thank you, maestro. Occasionally we Boxers like to kick ass and take names, or is it take names and kick ass, whatever.
Grif, I'd seen your earlier post. I'm like you, I don't open her Pop Med posts. The Israel stuff has rankled me for a while (ever since she hijacked one of Booknut's posts. And this when Booknut had been out there, literally putting her life on the line on the West Bank, and Toots is bloviating from xxx, MA.
( Gotta to dig out of the snow. Had a big 'un today. Catch the others later. Thank you all for your comments.)

Axeman, Parade magazine is exactly apt and I hadn't thought of the med news feed angle. I think if you have access to JSTOR , you might be able to able to get to some of her sources. But why bother? Nail her if she spouts off about copolymers or when she gets one of her molecular structures wrong, like for benzene ;-).
Yo, Bastard, cake is for them freaks. Us dogs like Special Kibbles 'n Bits or Purina Triple Chow. And apropos of nothing, one of the best epithets in Shakespeare was uttered by Philip the Bastard (a great character) in King John: By heaven, these scroyles of Angiers flout you, kings...

:0D J/K I've never seen her breasts! :-O
peace and happy new 365
If she messes with Steph, she's messin' with my little sister!
I'm humbled by your kind remark. I agree about your assessments of Padraig, Rob and Steph as well. They're good people...
Critical Mess: My humblest apologies. But a neutered dog like moi often forgets to make these virtual gender distinctions. Besides, you of all people should appreciate the rhetorical assonance of "old school tie guy" :-). "Old school tie gal" just doesn't have it -- might it even be an oxymoron?
nanatehay: Acolytes? Does she have any? I think the older OSers avoid her posts anyway, the newer OSers are more like flies to her spider, I'd venture.
odetteroulette: They bothered me too (especially her trashing of Booknut and her post) and I didn't speak up. Ironic thinking of the context of Niemoller's quote. But her last post did me in. Hopefully, the first and last time I'll post about another poster. Btw, your own post was beautiful.

Thank you, Dorinda. Coming from a rhetorician (rhetoretician?) that's high praise, indeed.
Connie Mack, thanks. I was in exactly your place till my level of disgust pushed me off the cliff. And I'm glad you said "steel" and not "balls", cause I'm neutered, you know :-).
Padraig, thanks. As you know, it was her BS reply to you that prompted this eruption. And I can give statistics with the best of 'em -- and she's not only NOT one of the best, she's a rank amateur.
Greg: Thanks and you're welcome. I must have been posting a comment on your Freddie Hubbard eulogy at the same time you were commenting here.
Synchronicity! Ignoring Toots is probably the right response. After all those on whom anathema was pronounced were shunned -- a kinder, gentler version of the earlier being burnt at the stake :-).
And thank you, Lainey.
And a HAPPY NEW YEAR to all.

Happy New Year.
Also, I have many Russian Jewish friends here that emigrated to avoid persecution - and many have relatives that went to Israel. Did you find any stats to show how many Russians might have gone there? I have a feeling It might be a substantial number.
BYIAOSWOOF (Bite you in Ankle OS WOOF)
Artsfish: I dare not even think of directing you off-site. The Israel CBS series on Russian(really pre-breakup USSR) immigration starts in 1990. From 1990-2001 they give the number as 805,000.
Prior numbers are not as reliable. The USSR authorities allowed hardly any emigration in the 1960s. The 70s and 80s saw 200,000 or so emigrate to Israel (various sources).

I also second your assertion regarding Greg and Steph as two very nice OSers.

I have no respect for her as a blogger. I'm sure the feeling is mutual on her part, and that is fine with me. I don't write for her.

And now for that other doctor......... just kidding. Just kidding.

"Might is right" might not have gone out with the Cro-magnons, but very few people (other than a few deluded dictator types) have tried to defend that view in civilized forums.

She is a piranha. Also, I believe a lot of her medical posts come straight from the New York Times and/or MedLine summaries--I get them as well, and it's eerie how often they reflect her post of the day.
Glad to see you back, Dawg.
You've got the best description of her yet: piranha. Very apt. If I cared to go further, I'd try to figure out her sources, but I think you're right on her Pop Med posts: story of the day from some feed, pad it a bit to avoid outright plagiarism (I would think), post on OS, get EP!
Hey, and it's good to see you back, merwoman.
And you too, CB, goes without saying.

Just read it again and loved it more!

WOOF! WOOF for you!

My uncle spent time in Palestine with CPT (Christian Peacemaker Team), so I don't even want to get into the pro-Israeli brainwash of the American people. I say this as a person who deeply respects Jewish people, faith, and traditions. Having suffered, even the Holocaust, does not give you a free pass to terrorize your enemies from that day forward. I have a bumper sticker on my car that says,
"When we kill the innocent, we become the enemy." I support the UN ceasefire proposal which requires both sides to desist.
Paws up for compelling stats and the voice of reason.
