Zerry: Now about that Enemies List .....

Rate: 19 Flag

Yesterday at 5:00 PM, regular as clockwork, Caruso Wegie posted another in the series of the exquisitely crafted, edgy, funny and highly original BATZ cartoons. This one was even better than usual because it included a clip of the templates the Walt Disney studios used for their toons, and provided the context for a discussion of art vs. commerce, business practice, ethics, led by a working cartoonist and graphic artist.

At 10:36 PM another OS member -- strangely enough, living less than 5 miles from Caruso -- posted the same clip, without providing any context (other than the rather lame "a friend sent it to me -- it's fun to watch").

Why was I not surprised today to see which post had made the cover? Now we've been told you are not a "reading" or "writing" editor, but apparently do watch a lot of TV (including YouTube clips). So unless Caruso is on some kind of permanent ignore, how did the second post time stamped more than five hours later make the cover and the first did not?

Was someone asleep at the wheel at 5:00 PM? We understand from Vinnie da Auditor's post  OS Problems: Follow da Money that you are "beleaguered" and we sympathize. But this kind of egregious oversight or deliberate disrespect of and insult to a long time, highly talented and committed OS member (yes, we know this is not a "community") should not be allowed to pass without comment.

While you are at it maybe you will tell us the algorithms behind the late, lamented Doc Amy's automatic EP's and covers and sudden ejection from the scene since now it appears no one was reading her much anyway, here or elsewhere.

And by the way, the link to your post about how Open Salon is a forum for original, creative, edgy writers, artists etc. seems to be broken.

Hear ye, hear ye. Thanks for looking out, CCC.
Nice work. I've finally decided to be content with the three people who ever read my stuff and stop caring about the egregious EP and cover selection injustices. Maybe Dr. Any Tooter's fan club decided to go straight to the source and start reading the online journal she took all of her material from.
CCC, I never looked at that cover story that you mentioned, so I was interested to read what you had to say about it in the context of Caruso Wegie's post of yesterday. I gave a thumbs up to Caruso's piece yesterday, but did not comment. This does beg the question of what's going on with these cover selections/EPs and that has been a huge question here for months and the cause for a lot of grumbling amongst many here, including me.
Yeah, this one really got under my skin. No matter what TPTB say, it is at least statistically clear to me that they have their favorites. That doesn't bother me that much -- they have their algorithms (I hope), it's their yard, have a ball. But when they seem to deliberately, consistently ignore certain people while making protestations to the contrary, that irks me. This instance was the most "provable". So I decided to write about it, come what may.

Wow, major oversight there. It's confusing how posts are chosen here.

My take on this issue is that I'm sure they have favorites, the bloggers who they will read no matter what is posted, and so their chances of OS "promotion" are increased.
Secondly, because it would be impossible for them to read every single post, I imagine they scroll through the "recent" tag, clicking on titles that appear interesting. Not the best way to find good writing, but I'm sure their abilities here are limited.

I don't know, typically I try not to think about these things and just try to plod along doing my own thing. You were right however to point this oversight out. This instance should be addressed. Now I'm off to the Caruso post, which, strangely enough, I missed.
It really must have hacked you off. I'm not sure I've seen you use the term TPTB.
I am alarmed at this, coming from a person who never complains about home page advantage. This needs to be explained, that's for sure.
I would guess it's at least in part because shaggy used "Disney" and "copied" in the title. People love to hate the House of Mouse (at least what it's become), so that would get a lot of people to click. Caruso's simply had his BATZ! title, with no mention of Disney. So, they probably didn't even look at his. I think the issue is, WHY don't they look at Caruso? We have a contributor here that cranks out original comics, and shares them with our community, and he never gets front page exposure. What's up with that?!
Awreeet, dog. Nicely put, and timely. Again.
Yes, I know, there is a perfectly innocent explanation, etc etc etc. But some people here are ignored so thoroughly, regardless of what they post, that one can be forgiven for thinking that it is deliberate on the part of the editor(s). The excuse that there are just too many posts in a given day doesn't really work for me, either. If you skim through a full day's worth of post titles, you can see that a sizable chunk are spam. It is actually impossible to skim through all of the non-spam posts in a couple of hours. You don't have to read every word of every post. Just check them out to see if they warrant further viewing. If they did that, I think more posts like Caruso's BATZ! would make the cover. (Forget non-cover "Editor's Picks." That's just weird and has no practical effect.)

I realize that there are decent, well-intentioned people here who consider us and others who regularly raise these issues to be "whiners" who are jealous or otherwise selfishly motivated. But consider that we might have another motive--concern for a unique online environment that we genuinely want to see succeed. I think it is also legitimate to feel disgruntled when you see what certainly appears to be unfair treatment of some of OS members.

Just adding my 2 cents to what the dawg said.
I heard he was seriously perturbed at the lack of an invitation to Freaky's hot tub party. So maybe that explains his mind being elsewhere.

I think you should crash his OS party in Manhattan and see if you can hike a leg on him before he figures out that warm feeling he's getting on his leg is not Joan flirting with him.
I think Harry's explanation is closest to the mark. Not being invited to Freaky's hot tub party would throw me off my feed too. Come to think of it I haven't been invited. The official explanation for "No Dogs" was that dog hair clogs the drain pipes, but I wonder if it really isn't because some dogs (not moi, of course) like to play around, creating those huge, exploding bubbles -- and if you have a lit doobie around, watch out -- even when the Jacuzzi jets are turned off.

Woofie, you know my thoughts on this. Nothing will happen. They definitely have favorites. Many of these are very good but not consistently or invariably so. That they get "automatic" EPs is probably due to lack of resources (though I agree with Susan -- it's not that difficult to get through a day's worth of posts for curatorial purposes if that's your full-time job) or inertia or perhaps a desire not to "offend" their designated favorites.

This thing with Caruso is different though. It does seem like a targeting thing. If it was inadvertent, someone should have the grace to admit it. Otherwise, we are left with the only other conclusion that can be drawn. It doesn't leave one with a good feeling.
I already weighed in but my comment sucked and got off track. Here's a thought: finding a video online and linking to it is worthy of recognition for having done something?! Link to all the videos you want but fucking do something your damn self! Giving that shit an editors pick really demonstrates the meaninglessness to which it has decayed. I've seen good use of compilations of videos to make some entertaining posts. (Kind of Blue, for example). "Hey look what I found" deserves a look , maybe, but not a fucking medal. I should say that I don't know what else shaggylocks does and hardly hold this against him.
C3, I apologize for befouling your doormat with a steaming load of low-brow vulgarity. By suggesting the existence of an algorithm you may be awarding too much credit yourself.
Right on! Thanks for noticing the perfidious favoritism.
