Yesterday at 5:00 PM, regular as clockwork, Caruso Wegie posted another in the series of the exquisitely crafted, edgy, funny and highly original BATZ cartoons. This one was even better than usual because it included a clip of the templates the Walt Disney studios used for their toons, and provided the context for a discussion of art vs. commerce, business practice, ethics, led by a working cartoonist and graphic artist.
At 10:36 PM another OS member -- strangely enough, living less than 5 miles from Caruso -- posted the same clip, without providing any context (other than the rather lame "a friend sent it to me -- it's fun to watch").
Why was I not surprised today to see which post had made the cover? Now we've been told you are not a "reading" or "writing" editor, but apparently do watch a lot of TV (including YouTube clips). So unless Caruso is on some kind of permanent ignore, how did the second post time stamped more than five hours later make the cover and the first did not?
Was someone asleep at the wheel at 5:00 PM? We understand from Vinnie da Auditor's post OS Problems: Follow da Money that you are "beleaguered" and we sympathize. But this kind of egregious oversight or deliberate disrespect of and insult to a long time, highly talented and committed OS member (yes, we know this is not a "community") should not be allowed to pass without comment.
While you are at it maybe you will tell us the algorithms behind the late, lamented Doc Amy's automatic EP's and covers and sudden ejection from the scene since now it appears no one was reading her much anyway, here or elsewhere.
And by the way, the link to your post about how Open Salon is a forum for original, creative, edgy writers, artists etc. seems to be broken.

My take on this issue is that I'm sure they have favorites, the bloggers who they will read no matter what is posted, and so their chances of OS "promotion" are increased.
Secondly, because it would be impossible for them to read every single post, I imagine they scroll through the "recent" tag, clicking on titles that appear interesting. Not the best way to find good writing, but I'm sure their abilities here are limited.
I don't know, typically I try not to think about these things and just try to plod along doing my own thing. You were right however to point this oversight out. This instance should be addressed. Now I'm off to the Caruso post, which, strangely enough, I missed.
I realize that there are decent, well-intentioned people here who consider us and others who regularly raise these issues to be "whiners" who are jealous or otherwise selfishly motivated. But consider that we might have another motive--concern for a unique online environment that we genuinely want to see succeed. I think it is also legitimate to feel disgruntled when you see what certainly appears to be unfair treatment of some of OS members.
Just adding my 2 cents to what the dawg said.
I think you should crash his OS party in Manhattan and see if you can hike a leg on him before he figures out that warm feeling he's getting on his leg is not Joan flirting with him.

This thing with Caruso is different though. It does seem like a targeting thing. If it was inadvertent, someone should have the grace to admit it. Otherwise, we are left with the only other conclusion that can be drawn. It doesn't leave one with a good feeling.
C3, I apologize for befouling your doormat with a steaming load of low-brow vulgarity. By suggesting the existence of an algorithm you may be awarding too much credit yourself.
