People's Ideas About God

Rate: 9 Flag

Since the death of Christopher Hitchens, a lot of people, many of whom identify themselves as Christians, have commented that “Now, he knows the Truth,” or “Hitch’s burning in Hell right now.” I guess because he wrote the book “God Is Not Great,” they’ve taken it as a direct attack on their beliefs. This fits in nicely with the current fiction that religion is so beleaguered in this country, children can’t pray in school (they can and do) or that wishing a “Merry Christmas” to someone is somehow striking a righteous blow for God. I have yet to have lightning strike me when I say “Merry Christmas” to anyone, and have observed a paucity of reports in the media of same. I’m sure with the sensationalist bent of coverage these days, crispy Christmas-wishers would have aroused some reporters’ suspicion. I also yet to have someone raise their eyebrows, roll their eyes, and reply superciliously, “Happy Holidays!”

If God is, by definition, all-powerful, I really doubt He (or She) needs our help for defense.  This brings me to what people’s ideas about God really reveal about themselves. Would anyone really want to worship a God who feeds on our fear, who downright needs cowering believers to grovel before Him? An image that comes to mind is Galadriel, in Lord of the Rings – Fellowship of the Ring, when tempted by Frodo’s offer to give her the One Ring that Would Rule Them All.

Is this the God you would love, or one you would run as far away from as possible? A God who demands this kind of worship would seem to me to be closer to the popular concept of Satan, rather than a God of love.

So in this season where the days get shorter, and the nights get longer, I would rather contemplate the ultimate source of love and life, light and creation at the center of the universe. If you really wish to see unconditional love in action, look in the eyes of your dog – it’s as close to God as you can get in this life. Merry Christmas!

Dang, I was trying to put a photo of our late collie, Revelie, at the end. It was really cute too. She had antlers on.
I think you did!

There is no one close to me that even thinks about religion. It is a non-entity in our lives. So I guess I'm with you.

Merry Christmas and happy 2012!
Not a dog owner, but my cats are the purveyors of great unconditional love in my life. Thanks for this post.
Oh there it is! Yay!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, dear Toritto!
Dear Erica, myes, we've had a couple of lovely cats in our lives over the years. I agree!
Merry Christmas, CC.

I'm an Agnostic...and I share many of the feeling you do about the gods being worshiped here on Earth. Not sure why any GOD would feel comfortable with people thinking "worship" is necessary or respectful, but I guess we each gotta handle getting past the graveyard the way we deem best.

Nancy and I are cat lovers--and we just recently lost our 19 year old friend, Sparky. I am sure the loss of Revelie gave you the same kind of pain we felt when Sparky went. She is beautiful...and looks exceptional in the antlers.
Dear Frank, I am so sorry about your dear cat Sparky. Loss is loss, no matter if it's a human loved one or a beloved animal companion. Thank you for commenting, and I hope you can still find some comfort and joy in these holidays at the end of 2011!
Nice post. I think St. Augustine said it best, "Love and do what you will."
Amen. (Although I did have one dog that thought I was seriously deficient as a deity and didn't mind telling me so.)
Maureen, this is one by St Aug I can agree with!
Bell, are you sure he didn't have a little cat in him? ;-)
Another cat owner here. May the ultimate source of love and life, light and creation at the center of the universe be with you. Thank you for this piece.

Last year started my return to Merry Christmas! Great post!
Fusun and Susie - Thanksabunch! I say take every opportunity to celebrate that you can! I think we need a lot more holidays in this country!
A great post. My relationship to God is the most precious thing in my life. But I struggle with man's personifications and all the confusing rules of faith memberships. Right now I'm a "Faith Freelancer" I go to church, the masjid, the park to smell the flowers and feed the ducks. I'll figure it out one day- I hope.
Sounds like a good path to take, Tiffany, and Merry Christmas to you! I think the only rule God wishes we would follow is, "Love one another."
As a tolerant secularist-agnostic who has no beef with people of faith, I can relate to what you're saying here. I've been saying "Merry Christmas" more often this year as opposed to "Happy Holidays" as an act of rebellion. One thing I share with my nine year-old daughter...I hate being told what to do.

Peace on Earth.
I'm with you there, Blue! What is it about being told not to do something that gets our back up and makes us go ahead and do it?! Reverse psychology!
