Not so lucky as according to a Tweet six minutes ago (2:11 EST), a suspect is in custody.

Now we will get to hear all about the cause to save the unborn and how he came to be a true believer.

George Tiller shot to death at Wichita church

BY STAN FINGER
The Wichita Eagle

George Tiller, the Wichita doctor who became a national lightning rod in the debate over abortion, was shot to death this morning as he walked into church services.

Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation. Witnesses and a police source confirmed Tiller was the victim.

No information has been released about whether a suspect is in custody.

Homicide detectives and Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston have arrived at the church.

Members of the congregation who were inside the sanctuary at the time of the shooting were being kept inside the church by police, and those arriving were being ushered into the parking lot. Witnesses are being transported downtown for interviews and other members of the congregation are slowly being released from inside the sanctuary.

Tiller has long been a focal point of protest by abortion opponents because his clinic, Women's Health Care Services at 5701 E. Kellogg, is one of the few in the country where late-term abortions are performed.

Protesters blockaded Tiller's clinic during Operation Rescue's "Summer of Mercy" protests during the summer of 1991, and Tiller was shot by Rachelle Shannon at his clinic in 1993.

Tiller was wounded in both arms, and Shannon remains in prison for the shooting.

Tiller's clinic was severely vandalized earlier this month. According to the Associated Press, his lawyer said wires to security cameras and outdoor lights were cut and that the vandals also cut through the roof and plugged the buildings' downspouts. Rain poured through the roof and caused thousands of dollars of damage in the clinic. Tiller reportedly asked the FBI to investigate the incident.

Sgt. Bart Brunscheen of the Wichita Police Department said there has been no activitiy today at Tiller's clinic, although security crews were being brought in to make sure the building was secure. Officials also were going to check the clinic's security cameras to see if there was any activity over night.

Tiller and his clinic have faced continuous threats and lawsuits. A Wichita jury ruled in March that he was not guilty of illegal abortion on 19 criminal charges he faced for allegedly violating a state law requiring an "independent" second physician's concurring opinion before performing later term abortions. Immediately following the ruling in this criminal case, the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts made public a similar complaint against Tiller that was originally filed in December 2008. Tiller's medical license could eventually be suspended or revoked by the board on the basis of the complaint.

We women sure have equal rights and control over our bodies in the mighty progressive US of A! /sarcasm
Murder in the name of being "pro-life". Sadly typical. It still flies smack into the face that women can never be free until we have absolute control over our own bodies. Tiller was a hero who saved the lives of thousands of women who would have turned to unsafe methods of abortion. He cannot be replaced.

Thank you for posting this.
Summer of Mercy. Sweet.
I want abortions to stop, but this is bullshit! These people do not understand that abortion will only stop when women are freed from their reproductive bonds and the constant belittlement they face from a society that still believes women are inferior (despite claims made even here on Open Salon). These "christian, pro-life" people, with their negative attitudes towards women, probably cause more women to have abortions than any liberal, feminist organization. I'm tired of hypocrites!
It is absolutely a form of terrorism. And terribly sad.
No one deserves to be shot to death, period.

Lairderg: Abortion isn't my cup of tea, but I do support a womans right to make that choice for herself. Abortion will always be needed but I think one of the ways to encourage its decrease in numbers is to increase access to pregnancy prevention in the first place. THAT is where the pressure should be. "Safe, legal and rare"
No, no, no, no, no, no.

Please let this not be true.

Please.
Disgusting. Religious violence in this country, among Christians, is not a thing of the past. The people who commit these kinds of heinous acts are on par with the likes of the Taliban. It is religion at its worst and most dangerous.
Dr. Tiller is a martyr, plain and simple. He knew that this was a very real possibility, and he kept doing what he thought was right and necessary.
Thanks for posting this. I'm sure the murderer is what I call a "soldier for God" who truly believes he is a hero, and that God approves. Possibly a Fundamentalist Protestant as, having been raised one, I began to realize how dangerous, Fascist, violent, even murderous some of my fellow congregants could likely be, depending on circumstances. Apparently, doing it for God precludes all else. No crime is too barbaric, too immoral, too violent or brutal, if one is doing it for God. Ask suicide bombers. Ask the Taliban.
I'm opposed to abortion, but absolutely deplore violent means like this. RIP, Dr. Tiller.
I heard an author interview on NPR a few weeks ago, wish I could remember the name. Her book is a history of the abortion debate in America. She points out that, outside of Catholicism, abortion was not a religious issue or even a divisive moral one in the US until the rise of feminism coincided with the Roe v. Wade decision. Suddenly, what Protestants and even Evangelicals had largely ignored became linked to the perceived threat of changing gender roles. It's not just abortion, but birth control and the whole concept of reproductive freedom that offend the 'values' of people whose world view is a shaky construction built to shore up fragile self-esteem and shield them from their fears.

If Roe v. Wade had been decided decades earlier - before the Pill, before NOW - it would have engendered little controversy. The timing made it inflammatory: an exclamation point on the insult of women's rights.

Fetal rights are a marketing tool; the emotional fuel that fires a political movement that has nothing to do with children, little to do with religion, and everything to do with power. At its core, the anti-abortion movement is anti-birth control, and would be anti-appendectomy if women were somehow shackled to tradition by the presence of an appendix.
I was looking for a quote that felt right in this case (don't ask me why, but sometimes I just want to build on a quote--lazy, maybe?). I came across this one, apparently done by G_GAIA , listed only as "AOL member."

"The common dogma [of fundamentalists] is fear of modern knowledge, inability to cope with the fast change in a scientific-technological society, and the real breakdown in apparent moral order in recent years.... That is why hate is the major fuel, fear is the cement of the movement, and superstitious ignorance is the best defense against the dangerous new knowledge. ... When you bring up arguments that cast serious doubts on their cherished beliefs you are not simply making a rhetorical point, you are threatening their whole Universe and their immortality. That provokes anger and quite frequently violence. ... Unfortunately you cannot reason with them and you even risk violence in confronting them. Their numbers will decline only when society stabilizes, and adapts to modernity."

I want to add that fear of knowledge isn't the only fear that drives these people. The other, more insidious and perhaps more powerful one, is the fear that their world is changing. The last 6 months in particular must have pushed this fruit over the edge.
I am so horrified it's hard to think straight. Stellaa, almost the first thing out of my mouth was that this is terrorism. At his church???? May his soul be with God.
I made the comment on Soap Box Amy's blog about how the "Pro-Life" movement started initially as a pro-segregation movement by the very moral leadership of Falwell who felt the need to open up private white academies. At that time, the only known pro-lifers were the Catholics. Even in the 1970s, fundamentalist preachers were not spewing anti-abortion rhetoric.

If anyone is interested, this article by The Nation gives a blow-by-blow account of the hypocrisy of today's anti-abortion movement and how their "passion for the unborn" really came to be.

Another loss due to ignorance. While late term abortions are not something I approve of, It's not my body. I don't who did this, but in the coming years, there will be more. With thousands of soldiers coming home everyday, with an estimated 33% with PTSD, and the government response so slow that it takes a year just to get a thorough examination, believe me, there will be more Timothy McVeigh's out there. He was adamant about abortion, and came from a family, just like many of these same soldier's , that were deeply religious. Government figures say there are 300,000 thousand Veteran's homeless. Why, this may not have to do with This murder, America is in for a long period of homegrown terror.
What stellaa and emma said. A tragedy indeed. And yet tomorrow, you will still see signs in front of abortion clinics that read "Choose Life", as if Dr. Tiller's never mattered. I mourn for his family and friends.
I'm with all of you. It's appalling, as others have mentioned, that in the name of God; in the "cause" of pro-life that a man was assassinated. I'm waiting to hear of the reactions and responses of so-called "officials" in the "pro-life movement". How vociferous and vehement will be their condemnation?
But this today--there is no justice in this. It is the equivalent of a jihadist terrorist committing murder/suicide in the name of God. What type of monsters do we still have in our society to do such a thing. The act is blasphemous as was the location.
This is almost just too gruesome for words.
Thanks for posting this. It is terrible news.
Change, that is one BADASS avatar!
I am sickened and sorry to hear this - very very sorry. Many years ago I helped one of my college undergraduates and some of her family to travel to Wichita (from NC) for a late term abortion. I was just her professor and her sister called me out of the blue one day and asked me to help because they didn't know where else to turn. My student had suggested I might help because I had a reputation on campus of being easy to talk to. Things were very different n those days. Thank God for Dr. Tiller. It was the only place in the country that we could find that could help this young woman - and he did. I hadn't thought about this in 25 years until today.

I am sickened by this homicidal, and yes, terroristic behavior of these fringe lunatics. I totally understand your anger. I share it today.
How does this make any sense?
I can't comment right now. I'm too angry and sad simultaneously.
I keep going back to this post and find myself wondering how it always seem to be that the most evil acts are always committed in the name of righteousness. The comments on Tweeter make me sick.
the tweets are disgusting, there is a moral equivalency that links them to the crime.

From O'Reilly to the Taliban, indeed any faith or political ideology (read: civil religion) that instigates hate and violence because the other doesn't believe as the "faithful" is complicit in the heinous acts committed in its name.
makes my heart heavy- Thanks for keeping us up to date ChangeAgent
So much for thou shall not kill, and turning the other cheek. These people are only Christian in their deluded minds. May their God judge them.
Dr WHO is innocent he was on another planet in the tardis at the time so leave him alone
Reading those tweets of hate was just chilling -
Arider, that Dr. Who line has been used in comments all over the internet all day long so you don't even score points for being clever or original. I realize you may be trying to inject some levity in what has been an incredibly down day, but it comes across as disrespectful to someone who dedicated their life to helping women in extremis. As he was one of the only three doctors who performed late term abortions, Dr. Tiller's assassination is a huge loss and not funny.
I can't help but wonder how much value this murderer had for women's lives. It seems we can find anything which is held in greater status than ourselves.
Changeagent, thank you for this post, and especially the Twitter feed - reading it was absolutely chilling. I just hope that this murder doesn't embolden other fanatics to commit more murders.

@ Stellaa - thank you also for reminding us that language matters, and that Dr. Tiller was not an "abortion doctor." He was a doctor who performed abortions as part of his dedication to protecting the health of women in a part of the country where it is greatly devalued (who I am kidding - it's devalued everywhere), and who gave his life for those beliefs.

I think it's important to remember that Dr. Tiller also provided other reproductive health services, including contraception, to women who would not otherwise have had access - make no mistake, many of those who are celebrating Dr. Tiller's murder would like to see the U.S. return to the Comstock days when virtually all contraception was illegal.

@"Hello," she lied, the author's contention that Roe vs. Wade would not have caused a political ruckus had the decision been made before gender rolls began to change.

The history of abortion in this country makes it clear that, as "Hello" stated, at its core, the anti-choice movement is a movement to control women's bodies. Abortions were legal in the U.S. from its inception, and were routinely performed by midwives. The movement to make abortion illegal began on a state-by-state basis in response to fear that Eastern European immigrants, who had higher birth rates than white Anglo Saxons, would threaten the cultural and "racial" status quo - sort of a reverse eugenics movement (gee, sound familiar anyone?). That said, doctors (male) were the primary force behind the drive to criminalize abortion - it was part of a larger attempt to push midwives (women) out of the "birthing" business and establish for themselves exclusive rights to practice medicine. As with the issue of rape, the abortion issue is about who has power over a woman's body.

A side note about late term abortions - they are extremely rare and almost exclusively performed in order to save the life or fertility of the mother. That is one of the reasons that the "partial birth abortion law" ruling did not make exception for the life of the mother. Women's lives mattered less in this instance than dogma.

A quote from Nancy Keenan, NARAL President: "If it proves to be an act of anti-abortion violence, as we suspect it is, then the full weight of the law must be used to send a clear message that these types of attacks will be prosecuted fully and swiftly." For those who are interested in joining NARAL's action alert network, you can do so here: http://action.prochoiceamerica.org/site/R?i=eXiegHdwqHE4km6MfdUdzw..
Changeagent writes:
"I hope this terrorist assassin resists arrest and is in turn shot dead by the police. "

I do, I really do, understand the anger. But . . . Dr. Tiller's murderer believed HE was acting as some sort of avenger. Let's not follow the same script.
Sorry tanya m, but it is not the same script. I refuse to turn the other cheek. There is a big difference between justifiable homicide which is what we call the deaths of criminals when they violently resist arrest and are shot by police officers and the assassination of an innocent man. I affirm my regret that Roeder was not gunned down like a dog yesterday in the road.
To anyone stereotyping Kansans - we are not all fundamentalists, morons, terrorists, and ignorant. Granted, we have our fair share, but don't include me with these people. The people who support killing *for* pro-life come from all over.
Pro-Life is a lie. The majority of those who claim the stance are merely pro-birth or anti-sex. Their concern for these unwanted children stops as soon as they are born. They are unwilling to pay the taxes needed to provide the basics of life. They do not shellter or love them. They are more than happy to let them bounce from foster home to foster home where they are seen as no more than a dollar amount on a stipend check and live as virtual slaves. Many go to places where they are abused emotionally, physically, and sexually their young lives destroyed by the scars left behind. The tweets are disgusting. These people will walk around and interact with all of us as though they were not responsible for any aspect of the violence that is done in the name of god. Many will look you in the eye and say that god is love while supporting murderers and misogynists. I am sorry for the loss of this man. Killed for nothing more than helping people in need.
I need to add that I did not intend to say that all foster homes are bad places or that all pro lifers lose interest at birth. Only that a great many do.
Sadly I am an atheist and do not believe in heaven or hell. But I'd like a hell to exist for the militant pro-lifers, starting with Bill O'Reilly. I'd like them all to become female in this special hell and to experience firsthand for the whole eternity life threatening complications in late term pregnancy while being unable to have a life saving late term abortion.
It turns out that Tiller's clinic was the only one of three or even two (!) able to perform late term abortions, which, as any sane person knows, are extremely rare and performed not when a woman has a baby blues as O'Reilly likes to brag, but when her life and health is in serious danger. Most of fetuses in those EXTREMELY RARE cases are also not viable. It is mindboggling how right ideology is working on ingnorant minds.
Anyone knows if those procedures can be done in Canada? I cincerely hope that no one I know will ever need this info, but I am just curious.
Those people on twitter are pathetic excuses for human beings.
