My wife called this morning to tell me that she put our dog to sleep yesterday. She told me on Sunday that she might do it this week. I encouraged her to check with the vet for other options, but we both knew that this would come sometime in the next couple of years.
He is old and he had a damaged hip that causes him constant pain. He has been on constant pain medication since we got him. We had him 5 or 6 years. Lately he has been having problems standing, and has been having his legs splay out and then he couldn't get back up and would just panic and flail. He was a wonderful dog. I miss him. I didn't get to say good bye.

Growing up, I had a cat for 10 years. He was acting a little under the weather, but my parents didn't believe in taking pets to the vet. My dad also hated that cat. So when I went to a friend's place for the weekend (I was 17), they put the cat down. No one talked to me about it. No one gave me a chance to say goodbye. I just came home and found the cat missing. No cat food dish. No cat litter box. No cat.
So I guess I'm trying to say I understand. You should post your favorite story about your dog here. That would be nice.
I am so sorry.
Hopper was named such because of how he ran--a bunny hop. Hopper is also a name of a wolf from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series that my wife and I both enjoy.
He loved to chase squirrels even though he could never even come close to catching one. Even after we lived in a squirreless place for several years, you could just say "squirrel" and he would run to the door, prancing to go out and chase them. He would then realize that there were no squirrels and would look at us like we were dirt for fooling him.
He would always try and herd my wife and I into the same room so that he could plop down between our feet. It made his world right.
He wouldn't walk through doors unless they were all the way open (previous owner must have trained that).
He adored my wife. When she would drive up, he would try and herd me across the house to go say "welcome back " to her.
We have a ramp that my father-in-law made for him so he could climb up into our Explorer. It had rungs, and anti-skid coating and everything.
He adored kids and strollers. His tail would start wagging so hard when he saw them--even ones he had never met before.
