Muttering Against the Wind

Bio
Born in the early 60's to a conservative Southern family. Woke up to the bigger world around me and started the process of becoming a free-thinker in the mid- 70's. That has been an interesting process that is still going on today. I grew up listening to The Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Tull and the like. Eventually I gravitated towards Dylan and The Band as I grew older (and wiser!). Music really helped me to start thinking outside the Southern Baptist box. I am proud to be a Liberal Democrat, and I vote! I have the same regard for religion that Jesus did.

the sneaking was the best and the worst part

Rate: 8 Flag

the sneaking was the best and the worst part

waking and leaving before light, already jonesing

the family safe and warm, sleeping still, not knowing

me outside in the driveway

next to the neighbors house, fumbling

to scrape together a hit, shaking

and sick to the stomach, then better

as soon as I lit and drew it in

but paranoid that someone saw me, suddenly

too wired to back out calmly

headlights garish bright, pounding glare filled my eyes

gritting and clenching, I pulled it together

to force my truck to back out slowly

as I headed out

towards a day like all the others

the sneaking was the best and the worst part

Powerful Charlie.
"As I headed out towards a day like all the others"
Scary to think about.
This works, Charlie. I've lived it, long ago and just now.
Good, true writing. Well done.
Rated.
Candace - rare praise! Gracias, señorita!

trilogy - on and off again for 20 years. two runs went everyday for two years plus each. scary? you've no idea. it's actually what I came to OS to write about, but haven't even managed a start yet. this is the first toe dip in the deep end of that pool. Thanks for all your support. :)

MP - keep it a long time ago, eh? Me too!

Scylla - true writing is your forte, I have been over to your place. That means a lot coming from you. Thanks, man.
Well, Charlie, it doesn't matter how long it took you to getting around to writing about it. Sounds like it wants to get out now. Great beginning.
Powerful. Thank you

I came to OS to write about my addiction to sugar. I learned so much about myself as I inspected the details and bounced my stories off others with similar problems. I hope you continue to explore this. It may help another person who you don't even know yet.
Right on! I did a lot of sneaking and could never remember where I his all the bottles.
I like a lot the way you've built this poem on an oxymoron" "the sneaking was the best and worst part." Two polar opposites, best and worst, brought dialectically together in "sneaking." Well done. I'm no psychologist (though I minored in it as an undergrad), but I suspect that deep within our best and worst behaviors lies a bit, maybe a big bit, of its opposite.
zanelle - Thanks for the encouragement. I hope to take that step soon.

Bill E. - Me too. Not having to try to remember is one of the best parts of the serenity.

Jerry - You are one of the BEST commenters on this site. Always detailed, thoughtful analysis in each comment. Honored to have you here, sir.
