Why Mitt Romney's Wealth Doesn't Bother this Democrat

Rate: 0 Flag

There is nothing wrong or immoral with being a successful business owner and millionaire like Governor Mitt Romney, a dream many Americans would eagerly choose if given the chance.

There is also nothing sinister about being a Harvard and Columbia scholar and Ivy school elite like President Barack Obama, who is one of the great orators and communicators of our time, even if his words may be read from a teleprompter from time to time, as Speaker Newt Gingrich repeatedly alleges.

As a voting active democrat, one might assume I am in favor of class warfare as many Republicans accuse, blaming the rich for all of society's ills, and believing in a 21st Century "Robin Hood style of government".

Of course I detest any corporate greed that leads to workers being left out to dry; theft by hedge fund investors who steal the life savings from countless hard working Americans; banks who make Machiavellian loans to millions of naive home buyers; and anyone who knowingly takes advantageous of the ever-shrinking middle class.

But if I may speak boldly for many of my fellow democrats, I do not believe that my party is obsessed or even driven by class warfare or Marxism,  nor do I think that President Obama is calling for or supporting policies that would even further divide the country into the have and the have nots.

Sure, Romney is a multi millionaire and has paid more money in taxes this year than most of us will ever see in our lifetime. But he is also a businessman who worked his way up to great wealth, has employed many people and created many jobs, and is now attempting to use knowledge he gained in the private sector to better the country, whether one agrees with his political ideologies or not, of which I do not.

And if he does become president, he will be the third richest in our nation's great history. But again, being wealthy does not necessarily make someone an "evil republican" with only plans to do away with all rights for those who are struggling financially.

Obama on the other hand was raised by a single mother, went to the best schools of our great nation, became a lawyer, worked as a community organizer, served in the Senate for four years and became the first Black President of our United States.

But in the end, the particular facts of these men who will fight for the highest office in the land in 2012 doesn't matter much.

What matters is that this country needs a leader who will have our best interests at heart always, be it for the poor, middle class or rich; the unemployed, employed and employers; the young, baby boomers and the elderly; the religious, unreligious and agnostics; people of every color; and for all of those who have felt that the American Dream is falling out of their grasp.

I will not hold the fact that Obama went to an Ivy League school against him just because I went to a state university. And I will not attack Romney because he is part of the one percent and because I am part of the 99 percent.

What matters is the content of their characters, and not the color of their skin.

What matters is how they each plan to create more jobs for the people of America, and not the balance of their checkbooks.

What matters is that the future for my daughters will be bright and secure; and that they will be able to attend college, raise children, afford healthcare, and own their own homes . . . all without putting themselves in debt, or adding to the already overwhelming debt of our country, which will only hurt every generation going forward.

What doesn't matter is politicians, the media and the public spending more time continuing to attack one another rather than focusing on the issues that matter.

What matters is that whomever our president is, that he introduces real ideas for real people that will result in tangible and long lasting results that our country can build upon.

What doesn't matter are savvy slick soundbites, desperate deleterious debates and empty enigmatic epitaphs.

Whether a leader and civil servant is rich and successful or not-- or vastly educated and well spoken or not, does not necessarily make or break a leader.

Our Founding Fathers, among them John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and George Washington were all wealthy. They were also highly educated.

These men participated in The American Revolution, signed The Declaration of Independence, established The United States Constitution and were delegates to The Federal Convention.

Imagine the media coverage of the Founding Fathers today with Twitter, Facebook, gavel to gavel coverage on the cable news shows, and the countless blogs, including this one.

I for one plan to vote for the issues that will positively effect this generation and the next, those that will most allow each of our citizens from every color, creed, religion and economic background the greatest chance of realizing the American Dream.

That is what matters.

Seriously.

huh? he's worth hundreds of millions, and do you really understand what Bain capital was about? its more of a vulture capitalist firm-- take over other large companies, disembowel them and sell the carcass.
We have a huge issue with concentration of wealth in this country that Barack Obama has not addressed and Mitt Romney never will. In my opinion your statements are naive. Pick up the current issue of the New Yorker and learn more about why Obama makes the compromises he does and how private equity firms rely on loopholes in the tax code to make money. The problem is the issues are not being addressed while the globalization and corrupt politics promoted by both parties bleeds our country dry.
Of course if this is satire I retract my reply. :-)
