Bio
I'm a 39 year old (happily) married guy (no kids) with a flexible schedule and lots of opinions. I was born and raised on the religious right, but now I live on the secular left. (Sorry, mom!) I'm interested in pop culture, politics, religion, the culture wars, and philosophy (among other things).

Thanksgiving Dinner Debate with My Right-Wing Christian Dad

Rate: 2 Flag

From a my right-wing dad that is opposed to the state interfering in the free market and socialized medicine: "Schools should teach 'love of country' and 'patriotism'" because "parents do not do it anymore."  I agreed that it was a parent's job to teach such things to their children, but objected to his "nanny state" politics.  I should have added a "Next, you'll want them to mandate how much turkey I can eat too!" and a "Hey, Brownshirt . . . you wanna regulate how much butter I put on my bread here?" for good measure.

My grandmother used to forbid the discussion of politics and religion at the dinner table. A good policy.
Your bio says you live on the secular left, but your reaction to reactionism indicates a libertarian streak. Freedom!
You're correct, Randy. I do have a pretty strong Libertarian streak. But, I'd make a distinction between Leftism and liberalism. It seems to me that liberals tend to view the state in a more positive light than I and see it as a possible means for achieving social justice, etc. I'm way more skeptical of it in regard to such things even though I share with liberals many of the same Leftist ideas and attitudes about economic inequality, civil rights, and so forth.
