Race, Rascism, and Politics

Rate: 3 Flag

If there's one thing that demonstrates a need for a national dialogue on race in American society and politics it is our national dialogue on race.  For example, check out the exchange between Pat Buchanan and Prof. Dyson on Hardball.

Awkward, indeed.  Here in Louisiana, some people still run around with Confederate or Rebel flags in the university's colors on game day.  These same folks get upset or offended that some other people are offended by the flag.  Some folks that like the flag go so far as to suggest that if you find the flag offensive, then you do not understand basic history.  If you did, they claim, you'd realize that there's nothing rascist about the flag at all.  It's just a sign of southern pride, they say.  Sometimes when I run into one of these people, I suggest that if they knew how to avoid the genetic fallacy and took into account the entire history of the flag and southern pride, they'd realize that it's not unreasonable for some people to associate the flag with rascism and to be offended by it.  And, that if they asked themselves "What would Jesus do?" and followed the main principle of Christian morality, then they'd probably realize that pride is one of the deadly sins, and think twice about showing their southern pride with Confederate flag.  If that does not work to convince them they're in their wrong, then you might have to call them a "coonass."  And, then they get "offended."

Whenever I see the confederate flag, which I do occasionally, here in Europe, I assume if it's a statement that the person flaunting it is a racist.

Maybe what the south needs is a new symbol. A flower or something. Spanish moss, or a magnolia. That way people can show their "southern pride" without a historical context.
Some really good points in here. I wonder what would happen if teams had names like Houston Honkys, Richmond Rednecks, or Cleavland Crackers. Maybe even Washington Whiteskins. Thanks. cy
good grief that was unpleasant to watch. Good points regarding the flag. What I find truly incredible is when you see the Confederate battle flag displayed in the north...and yes, you do see it occassionally. Those people don't even have the excuse that they are merely showing their heritage or Southern pride. There is no reason for the flag to be displayed in the North other than as a symbol of one's support for racist policy.
I think Prof. Dyson was speaking some poewerful words. It's a shame that there were technical difficulties. I also want to add that Pat Buchanan fails to realize (like others) is a lot of the ills in the Black community are as a result of what whites have and continue to do. During slavery, families were torn apart and the men were often used to lay with numerous slave women to produce more slaves. If you look at the number of Black children growing up fatherless, the numbers outweigh white children. I believe that was one of the curses of slavery.

In the past (I don't think this still occurs) if a woman was on welfare, there would be someone who would go around and check to see if the women has a man living with them. If they did, their aid would be cut or eliminated. As a result of these checks, if a man was living with his woman, he'd have to find somewhere else to stay. Most times that was with another woman.

Now, I could go on with more examples, but I am not going to do so. I think a lot of white people want to be shielded from the truth as it relates to race. I guess when you are not directly affected by the ills of society, you may not think there are issues regarding race.
