Born to two humans, I have two prodigies who are also (coincidentally) human. I am the missing link. Look under "Sausage" and you'll find me. Not a good writer. But I love to laugh. So I read more than I write. I drink a fair bit too but that is irrelevant.

Turns out Chicken Little is full of crap

Rate: 16 Flag

I'm convinced Chicken Little was the model Ted Turner used to start CNN. What better focus group for what has become the world's leading pervayor of fear, than some chicken who always ran around claiming the sky was falling.

 Again.

All we hear about is how mis-directed  our youth is. When I was growing up it was called "being a teenager." These days it has become "evil incarnate." Kids are so self absorbed no one believes they will become anything other than miscreants, thieves, rapists, and murderers (unless they go into politics... then they're just "successful.")

Those of you who read my November 11 posting know that my Uncle Jim died in World War II. The letters he wrote back to his family were consistent in their praise of the Salvation Army. They were there in the trenches with them, handing out food, and dry clothing. He always, always said "if you support any charity ever... make sure it's the Salvation Army." So in his memory my wife and our two daughters always volunteer at the Sally Ann Christmas ball in the mall in our  town. You've seen the people standing there, ringing their annoying bells, thanking you when you drop a dollar or a few coins into the ball. That's us.

We live in what used to be a small town but has now become synonimous with "wealth." When people hear you're from Oakville they automatically paint you with a different brush. Snob... bitch... Gucci are all words that are bandied around. In high school if you're not wearing Abercrombie, or American Eagle, or Coach then you are ridiculed.

So imagine my surprise on the weekend, when we were doing our first shift on The Ball. A full 35% (don't ask how I got that number. It was very scientific and didn't involve any (well "many", anyway) live sacrafices) of the people who dropped in money were between the ages of 16 and 25. Another 30% were under 16. This made me want to weep with joy. These kids not only get it... they are willing to do something about it.

At a time that is difficult for many, and so full of joy for so many more, it made my heart sing. The sky is not falling. It is being held up by some very strong and capable hands.

One of the reasons I enjoy teaching is getting an up-close and personal look at some of the truly great teens there are out there. Glad you got to see some of them in action!
*cominghome... My brother teaches high school and says the same thing. You just have to look past the bad apples. Just like everywhere else.
*JK... OTHS poisoned my life for one year. I try not to let that demon out too often (an interesting point... their sports teams are still called the Red Devils.) There's still some good out there.
In my day, the concept of "juvenile delinquent" had just reared it's big shaggy head. Kids were seen as left-overs in the fridge gone bad: spoiled. Then when I taught high school, it was well-known that every kid around was stoned, stealing, and worthless. But when I marched against the Iraq war, I was surrounded by youth: whirling, singing, chanting, and covered over with peace slogans.

I'm with you, Chris. I've always thought we could rest easy. The kids are alright.

Wonderful post, lots to think about. As usual.
Just when I thought this would be a (well-written) doom & gloom rant...
You have pleasantly surprised me!
Awesome ending.
:-)
This was great to hear. I agree, too many people put down the "new" generation, but they're nothing like the "need and greed" generation that are now adults. Great Stuff! (speaking of Chicken Little, my post tomorrow has a mention of him. Great minds and all that...,)
R~~
I always give to Sally Ann Chris. I will never forget the ticket they bought for me to fly home for my Dad's funeral from Toronto.
I think the teens today care alot. I am sick of the vilifying of the young today. Jus' sick of it.
There are some good ones, and there are some rotten ones. I'm not sure about chicken little and the sky falling. (I still keep a close eye on the sky, but then again I'm also a member of MUFON) Anyhoo,

Rated for Optimisim and Happy Thoughts.
So right . . . besides, the more we villify the teens, the more likely they are to become what we think they are . . . tell someone they're a piece of shit for long enough, they may begin to believe it. When I decided not to teach, it wasn't because of the kids. It was because of the teachers/administrators, most of whom seemed not to see the students as real people . . . they were just "messed up kids."

Good on ya' with this post.
*writer to the stars... as a highschool teacher I'm sure you saw your share of villains. But somewhere, somehow, all those stoners end up being human beings. Except for Cheney. He's just a Dick.
*spotted_mind... always aim to keep 'em guessing. One day someone will think I'm smart AND good looking. The joke's still on me.
*scanner... I'm sure the thought was yours first and I just read your mind. Either that or my head will explode later tonight.
*Cat... I thought my girls were the only two good ones in North America but apparently I'm wrong. I am so glad to have found this out before I had them all deported.
*mission... what a great story. They paid my ex-sister-in-law's heating bill for a full winter in Chicago, many years ago, too. Unfortunately they permanently removed her soul so we had to toss her to the ditch.
*Andy... OK... I will bite. What's MUFON? I'm assuming it's not Mormons Undecided For Optimism or Neutrality. If it is... being undecided and Neutral generally go hand in hand. So good luck to you all.
*Owl... Couldn't agree more. Except that my mom kept telling me I was tall dark and handsome, and it turns out she was full of crap too. Sometimes saying it often enough DOESN'T make it true. Too bad you couldn't have worked that magic on the administrators and other teachers. How many bent kids have been straightened out by that "one teacher" who made all the difference in their lives?
Just like spotted -- I almost didn't read this when I saw "Ted Turner" and "CNN" in the first paragraph. I'm glad I did, though. This is one of those GOOD stories we rarely hear about.

Proud of those kids. And thanks for writing about it.
*skeletnwmn... thanks for dropping by. I was blown away at these teenagers who were hanging out in groups... coming by and putting in money. No parents around to apply pressure... nothing. If I hadn't had my tear ducts surgically removed I would have cried.
*poorsinner... Yup. I have canceled my ticket to Mars. We might save this planet yet.
MUFON = Mutual UFO Network, a friendly group of folks as you'll ever meet, save for perhaps the Liberty County Firearms Association. Either way, it's a lot of fun, and good stories all around.
Hence the "eyes on the sky" comment.
Hmm, did they succeed in saving the oak in Oakville? The one that gave the city its name but was inconvenient to road-widening?
*Andy... Huh. I always thought it was the UFOs that were keeping the sky up. As you were.

*Bill's dubious... yes they did. If you look at the New Improved version of highway 25... just before it hits Dundas Street you'll notice a fairly big... um... let's call it a Wow... or a curve. That is to circumvent the mighty oak of which you speak. We will do anything in Oakville for an Oak. I was thinking of changing my name to Chris Oak.
Those are some good kids, Chris. Their generosity should be a reminder that it doesn't matter what generation you come from; you can always be a decent human.

Great post. Thanks for sticking up for our generation.
*Shan... Ya it ticks me off a bit. These Oakville kids are easy to dislike, sometimes and when they do stuff like this it just turns my world upside down. Whatever happened to the "me" generation?
*GJI Penguin... something tells me this generation will stick up for itself without any help. I have to say, it was truly a pleasure to see. Kinda makes an old fart weak-kneed.
great post. i decided to have my own teen read it because with her bright blue mohawk hair & pierced lip, she gets a lot of funny looks from adults (well duuh...its a bright blue mohawk why wouldnt they look?) and feels most adults unfairly judge teen books by their covers.

she read this post & said: "he gets it! Tell Chris Brown (not the felon) I heart him."
*lorianne... This experience has given me a whole new perspective on all people (not just teens) that we would normally look a little sideways at. Everyone's got their own story, huh?
Four and a half years after Hurricane Katrina, I still see groups of teenagers coming down on their school breaks to rebuild perfect strangers' houses.
