I am a long time devotee of film noir, the classic black and white films of eras long gone. The most significant and most memorable lines of all movie time have come from those dark classics. “Last night, I dreamt I went to Manderley again/” “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” (Yes, I know this one springs from the color screen but despite the romance it still possesses enough of the dark, or noir, element to qualify it in my eyes as film noir).
But can there be any more memorable line than Bogart’s immortal Louie, this could be the start of a beautiful friendship. I doubt any other scene from any other movie better depicts life in all its abandon than that final scene. Whether child or adult there tends to always hover a certain air of suspicion when it comes to making a new friend. The hackles are automatically up even if they might not be showing.
That’s sort of how it is when two cats meet. There’s a lot of staring and glaring and the level of nervous crying brings new definition to the term caterwauling but then eventually they look at each other and with a flick of a tail they will nibble from the same bowl. This usually occurs right around the time you are threatening to turn them both back to the shelter.
And so it starts a beautiful friendship….and so it is here at my house…or as I like to call it ~ Catsablanca.
