Chaos & injuries at Memorial Day Parade!

Rate: 7 Flag

There's really nothing worse than working Memorial Day weekend. Well, yes, of course there is. But let's pretend there's nothing worse.

So you're stuck working. Your work will consist of editing stories about  -- you guessed it -- Memorial Day parades! What fun! I know. I’m grateful to our dead veterans. And the living ones too. I know. I know I know I know. I sound like a terrible person.

But I hate all parades equally, OK? Does that help? I could be editing, oh, candy and shoes on parade and I’d be thinking, "Oh man, not AGAIN?? Every freaking YEAR?! Another shoe parade?!"

So, be it lovely shoes and rich chocolate, or marching bands and Vets in jeeps, I hate all parades.

Except this year. This year, Morris Plains, N.J. had the best Memorial Day parade ever! Truly! OK. I'm once again about to sound like a truly terrible person. But as far as parades go? This was fun. And nobody got hurt. Not really …

First, a planned flyover with a Coast Guard helicopter went out of control and hovered too close to trees, knocking branches down, the whirling blades causing hurricane-like winds, whipping strollers and lawn chairs through the air.

A few people got banged up, but no one had to go to the hospital and the parade carried on as planned.

Later, having nothing at all to do with the chopper, a cart pulled by a pair of Clydesdales toppled over after the horses got spooked. No one knows why. The driver actually was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, while the horses ran amuck, wedging themselves between parked cars. The horses are fine, the cars, not so much. But the cars were parked, and empty; no one got hurt.

As a reporter, parades just don’t get better than this. As a veteran editor, it’s a dream come true! Just for added fun, antique cars stalled -- one containing an assemblyman -- further adding delay to an already-botched event.

In the end, however, the most important part -- the opening ceremonies at the monuments of our veterans -- was preserved and documented. The day ended at the VFW and although the parade was full of mayhem, it’s one no one will ever forget.

Except for last year’s when a bear wandered toward the crowd … but it was smart enough to quickly retreat knowing full well that Morris County and bear hunts have an on-again, off-again relationship.

(note: Photo is by Vincent Marchese of Morris Township NJ. I tried to get a photo credit under the picture, but it didn't work. Behind the horse is the VFW Hall in Morris Plains, and in front of the hall, local vets.)

Typical small-town Jersey Parade.

What's better?

What's worse?

Next time I find myself feeling sorry that I have a shitty job, I will think of you covering a parade. Oy!
Typical? Where do you live that there's choppers knocking branches down and horses running amuck?
oh i love that he made a break for it!
Loved your post--I just read it outloud to my daughter and we both laughed out loud! We are horse people and know what happens when horses get spooked, and cart falling over doesn't help. Glad the horses didn't get too damaged--the cars? They probably have insurance. Loved the helicopter mishaps, too. And you do know that the picture you have included is a mule, don't you? That isn't a Clydesdale, which is a heavy brown draft horse with flaxen mane and tail, and long white "feathers" on all four feet. Just checking.

Great post!
And I thought parades were boring. How are they going to top this next year? Maybe a "running of the bears".
Cberg -- it's a freaking mule?? damn sources who don't know any thing! I certainly can't tell a dog from a cat ... ok, that i can. but. jeeze. Thanks for laughing and reading! and i'll make a quick correction b4 going on press!

Jane -- me too!

hachetface -- things come i 3s I'm told -- so i can't wait for the bears' hostile take over of the parade next year!
I live in Jersey - sheesh!
Perhaps next year they can have a medley float: with bears riding clydesdale mules pulled by a helicopter filled with baby carriages. Maybe throw in a few electric eels for good measure. What could go wrong?
Um, that's a mule... oh, I see someone else already said that. He's a lovely mule. Parade sounds like a blast, next year wear a helmet!
I'm looking at the mule and growing increasingly confused. No wonder the parade went awry - there's nothing resembling a bridle or bit on that animal, nor, as far as I can see, the remains of one. You know, the bridle, the part you use to STEER the animal? :D

Note - the part over the critter's face is pretty essential!
hate to stereotype NJ, but this post made me think about the street fair in the Sopranos, which was a front for the mob ripping everybody off & I wondered how they made money off the pour Clydesdales...
See, now this is why I don't go out to these kind of things. Much safer at home. Glad you are safe...thanks for sharing...I think.
I love a free spirit! That is a horse after my own heart!
not so bad, eh

funny stuff Cindy
oh, ya know what allie? it's a Jersey Clydesdale -- which just happens to look a bit like a mule, and they would never tolerate a bridle or a form of control, free-spirited as they are, like middleagedwomenblogging said the free spirit.

i'm certain this was the best Memorial Day's Parade ever JK, & Bri -- it's worth a trip to the states next year! I'm going to float mjr's idea!

Was fun Trig!
