Spring cleaning ... oh the slings and arrows

Rate: 8 Flag

Ah, to spring clean, or not to spring clean. That is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer … or just get it over with.

madaonna

I’m from a mixed message of spring cleaners. My mother? Scrubbed, scoured and tossed. Her mother? Same thing. She burned her wedding dress just because it took up space, and who needed it again anyway?

My father? He likes “curb appeal.” If the outside looks great, who cares about the inside? His mother? Oh my.

She’s in a nursing home now. But her Hoboken brownstone? Four floors of miscellaneous stuff. She’s still mourning where all her stuff is … wants to know where every last trinket ended up.

So every spring, when we’re supposed to clean up and throw out … I get stuck.

This year is different, however. This spring I live in a small space. And although I donated (and tossed) bags of stuff to get into this small space … well. It’s still cluttered.

As I’ve been hunting around to find more things to toss and donate I keep getting stuck on one particular pile: vinyl. I have this stack of old vinyl records taking up prime real estate in my (only) closet. Some covers I hung on walls … others I’m thinking I can make into … purses.

But the reality is … I can’t make a purse out of an LP. And there is only so much wall space I can decorate with album covers before my tiny space will look, well, sad.

Why can’t I part with these relics of my high school years? One, an old boyfriend signed. Another? A rock star himself (ok, it was just a Bay City Roller). I look at each album cover and I remember every concert. I remember walking downtown to the local record store, my babysitting money clutched in my hand so I could buy Madonna’s latest. Or an oldie from the Doors. Warren Zevon, the Cars … Yes, Jethro Tull and Rush.

These records hold more memories than my high school yearbook. These records tell the truth. They still speak to me. My yearbook? Eh, I could toss.

But these old LPs? I’ll always keep room for them, even if I have to toss more clothes.

How true - we cling onto the oddest things that hold memories of an era or a precious period of our lives. I love your creativity with vinyl-cover purses, but you should make sure the records themselves are not scratched. They are a time piece. Great writing.

Thanks fusunA. It is weird how the oddest things bring back memories long forgotten. Maybe I'll make a mobile out of the scratched records ... hell. I'm sure they're all scratched
I keep thinking to do a post on this but haven't fully come to accept what I can and cannot toss. We will see....vinyl never toss vinyl, it will make your kids laugh for years at what you listened to.
haha lunchlady. my kids --teen and young adult -- are so rap and hip-hop (which i enjoy as well) ... the vinyl. oh, they're like "how awful." but they appreciate the cover art and see what they're missing. i can't imagine life without mp3s, my iPod. ... but still not parting with my records.
NO! Don't destroy the vinyl...
OMG, a Bay City Roller?! Which one?! I wanted to be Ian. I even...do not make fun of me...I even cut off a pair of pants and sewed plaid trim onto them...yes...I did...I no longer have them...I've always been able to let these kinds of things go...I have other stuff that's hard to let go of...xox
Never give up the albums. Ever. Some items hold memories worth more the gold.
Rated.
S-A-TUR-DAY NIGHT! lol I have all my vinyl too.
Oh those vinyls, they cling to us like wet leather pants!
Not that I ever had a pair of leather pants!
I'm still working on my post for this great OC.

Does anyone spring-clean anymore? Who has the time?
robin, it was just derek, the drummer. but my true love was Ian ... I still can't I'm not Mrs. Ian Mitchell living in Scotland, lol. And I had the ants cut, plaid sewed in place. I would've been a groupie ... except I was 12 and my parents said no.

ur right bri and scylla - the vinyl must stay.

lschmoopie -- let's sing it!!

Thanks outonalimb. let me know when you post.

well leon ... i've made friends with my dust bunnies -- they need love too. But small spaces require some discipline. So toss and donate I must do
