There’s a world famous hot dog spot in New Jersey that’s been around since the 1920s. Rutt’s Hut, Clifton. Google it; you’ll see that I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s world famous.
There’s nothing like a Rutt’s dog. Eat in or take out, top it with chili, onions, cheese or everything they offer. Or eat it plain. Rutt’s mastered the art of the hot dog. Their specialty is deep fried … until the skin rips open.
Rutt’s is in almost every guidebook to good eats in NJ. It’s also been featured on several TV shows, tons of magazines and newspapers. Check out the book "500 Things to Eat Before It's Too Late." Rutt’s is in there.
So now a hot dog place opens up down the street calling itself Mutt’s Hut. And Rutt’s is suing. Not because of nearby competition. But because of the name.
Rutt’s told me they trademarked the name and they don’t want anyone to go to Mutt’s – thinking it’s the famous Rutt’s – and ruin their good image. I haven’t tried a Mutt’s dog … no reason to. Rutt’s is the best and I can see how they have a case.
People might think they’re affiliated … or eat Mutt’s and think it’s Rutt’s and think “what all the fuss?”
Rutt’s is an experience, not only of kick-ass dogs, but the history, the icon they’ve become. And it’s one-of-a-kind look and crazy location, off the highway. You have to find Rutt’s; It doesn’t find you like a fast food joint or a big box store.
I hope they have a case. I’d hate for anyone to accidentally end up in Mutt’s instead of Rutt’s. Ask anyone in Jersey about Rutt’s – they’ll tell you hurry on over.
Mutt’s Hut. If they weren’t trying to capitalize on Rutt’s famous name, why didn’t they think of some other name? Mutt’s Hut? Sounds like a place you take a dog for a haircut.
If you’re ever in Jersey, let me know and I’ll take you to Rutt’s. And Mutt’s? Change that dumb name. Mutt’s Hut. Please.

imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but here it seems to be the refuge of scoundrels...

Always wondered if anyone outside Jersey appreciated a hot dog that crunches when you bite it?
