Lining up on the blacktop behind his teacher for the first day of school, my son – the Kindergarten Crusader – instinctively sought out two other kids with Spiderman backpacks, another boy with the same Speed Racer lunchbox, and a boy wearing a different outfit from the new Shaun White Collection by Target (with, um, a little help from Dad, Kindergarten Crusader selected some camo shorts and a black t-shirt with an 8-eyed skateboarding monster for his first-day-of-school outfit).

I hope he ends up making friends with some of the other kids, too, but the whole thing reminded me of walking around a certain college campus in Washington, DC on the first day of school in 1994, wearing my favorite punk rock t-shirt and seeking out new friends solely on the surface basis of their punk rock t-shirts. Some of the people I met that way, that day, have now been my best friends for the last 14 years. So... more power to the kid. Might as well seek out the other superheroes first.

ps... I went and introduced myself to the other skateboard dad, figuring I could use an ally, too: We also met our first super-villain dad on the first day of school, surely the father of our kids' future playground nemesis.

Spider man is not a bad way to go. I always tried to get Thing One into Hello Kitty so I could pretend that's why I was buying so much of that Sanrio crap. It never worked.

Thing Two has just started drawing his own comics. And there is a super hero. Super Cow. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Yay to school uniforms!!

Short of that, Spiderman is pretty cool...
Most schools with uniforms allow you to chose your own backpack, at least the ones I attended.

Super cow, that's great.

My daughter's self-invented super heros are "Fighter Pony and Electricity Cat."
Nicely done. Way to get him into skateboarding early - I assume there is a board somewhere to accompany the Shaun White garb.
