Comcast and the economic crisis

Rate: 0 Flag

My grandparents are rolling in their graves every time I hear a customer complain about the economic crisis. I am lectured by self-righteous customers on their soapboxes about the economic crisis we're in, the depression we're in, the recession, yada yada. Yet most of these customers who whine about their prices have upgraded services with premium movie channels, digital packages, 3 extra boxes, and dvrs in their home.

In my book, during economic crisis, people should be budgeting, cutting back costs, and minimizing excess spending. I hear complaints of how customers can't pay their Comcast bill because they have priorities such as electric and groceries and insurance.  Well good for you ladies and gentlemen. Are you surprised that I don't have sympathy? I live in the same area as you, facing the same bills as you, and I'm not deaf nor dumb to the issues around us.

I am more than happy to help you lower your costs, budget your money, and have yet another satisfied customer. However, I cannot help spoiled children who must have top-notch packages at a penny cost. I hear customers demand, DEMAND, that we do x, y, and z for a determined price. How on earth do some of these people look themselves in the mirror without feeling shame? A customer once told me that she was struggling to put a roof over her children's heads and food on the table because her cable bill was so high. In the most pleasant tone I could muster while having a friendly, sympathetic conversation, I told her that if it was me, my kids would take precedence over a premium cable package and perhaps downgrading would be of some help. I was flabbergasted when she continued to stress that she needed to have everything at the same level. She actually tried to justify not feeding her kids to have everything under the moon on her tv.

Oh and the complaints of promotional prices and that the price should not go up after a certain amount of time! What is so hard to understand about the concept of promotions? They are not just for new customers, they are not our way of reeling you in to rip you off later. They are a tool that we use to help you save some money for awhile and you are eligible for them again after a certain amount of time. You get used to having your internet price at $20 a month and when it goes to normal rates, you have a heart attack and call in demanding that we give you $20 of high speed internet for the rest of your time with Comcast. Excuse me? Name one company that can offer you 6mg high speed internet with a download of up to 12mg for $20 a month all year every year.  Oh, you didn't know that it was a promotional rate? I find that hard to believe when the smart consumer will shop around before purchasing and therefore you get an idea of how much services cost at retail value. Don't forget that little notice on your bill every single month that says "Your promotion ends on x/x/20x". If your excuse is that you don't look at your bill, then there's nothing short of hitting you over the head that I could do to get this information across to you and I have been told we are not allowed to hit our customers. That's a shame; sometimes it is the only way to knock some common sense into a thick skull.

Hello Comcast.

I used to love you, I did. But you kept raising my rates without providing additional services and though I could afford it, it offended me on principle. So I left you and went with DirectTV, who has not raised my rates in the three-plus years I have been with them, which I think is just fine. Also? Their customer service really is excellent.

That said, people are weird. And TV is a drug. And you, Comcast, must listen to an awful lot of weird, addicted people. You have my sympathy.
