Reminiscence Installment 28
I kept walking for a long time after staying with the sharecroppers. The memories of how they live still haunt me. I will never again think that I am not blessed by the things that I have.
Anyway, after a hot day of walking, things went right for me last night. I caught a freight that did not stop for at least four hours. Good sleep, got lots of distance out of the trip.
I could have held on for longer, but I saw the ocean and jumped off. I've never seen anything so big and wild before, repeatedly coming up and biting off pieces from the little patch of sand that stands between me and the vast expanse of water. Even the air smells different here - more fresh and clean.
Funny thing, as pretty as the ocean is, there isn't a house to be seen in either direction. I guess that I'm in for a walk. At least I will have time to think about things.
I'll stick to the sandy side road for now. Maybe there will be another freight that comes by and I can catch it for a few miles. Sure wish I had a canteen of water. Some food would be good too.
