Tea Meditation

 blue tea

Tea starts the day, just sitting in its cup, cooling, looking out on the world and giving me a new sense of what’s possible. It’s not like coffee that demands attention and energy. Tea coaxes me into facing the morning, seeing the sun’s new light first glowing over the mountain. It’s a gentle invitation, not a monumental push.

And it tastes good even when it’s cold. I mean, coffee is nice when it’s poured over ice, but not so much when it’s room temperature. But tea, it’s like a barely perceptible breeze on your face when you’re walking through a forest and come upon a clearing. The grass moves almost imperceptibly, then your cheeks detect just the smallest movement possible in the air. It’s like a transcending experience that takes you from the here and now to there and beyond. It’s not easily shaken.

You take it home with you, not in a box or a brown paper bag, but in the intimate space of your mind. And if you’re very, very lucky, you might some day find a person with whom to share this. A person who will listen and feel the breeze when you talk about it and who will never laugh as you recall breathlessly the wonder of that moment.

Lawd knows, I is a coffee fanatic (I eventually finish my travel mug's worth at room temp) but tea is indeed soothing...nicely mediated, Coyote.
Holding coffee as I read this, coyoteoldstyle. I do agree about tea, though, as I change over in late morning to hot tea. I usually drink herbals like chamomile, and lemon balm. Earl Grey is a fave of mine. There are sooo many teas out there.
Tea has an essence that is like no other.
I love the words where you describe the drinking. Like no other. Yeah!!!
A nice English breakfast tea in the late afternoon. Life is good indeed!

Brian, I love coffee so much too.

Jeffrey that's sad but I'm happy a beautiful thing gave you both esthetic pleasure and service.
Suzy, I rearranged the cupboard where I keep my teas this morning and was shocked at how many we have. Different ones suit different moods, don't they?

Geezer, I agree. The right tea at the right moment enhances life.
As a dear friend of coffee, I rated this post.
I've rated this, and I'd add a longer comment, but I need some coffee...
Ommm, shanti, shanti, shanti...

A bit of green tea for me please...

I love the picture. Our home is filled with what incorrectly refer to as "blue stuff". My wife collects it. She's as devoted and dedicated to its upkeep as she is her husband. Very lucky "blue stuff".

Umbrella, thanks, I just love that breeze.

rijaxn, thanks for the crossover!
Rob, go in peace and get your coffee. Come back later and have some tea.

Greg, my husband really doesn't like blue and white ginger jars but I do so we compromise on when to display them. I made the photo treatment as a kind of homage to them.
I used to like a nice cup of Earl but lately I tend to prefer Lady Grey. It's the same kind of thing, but with a hint of citrus, and not as harsh ... I fall back on Earl Grey when I need something more in the way of a harsh jolt.
Agree...Im a recent convert to green tea but am really loving it like the gentle breeze..off to get a green tea for myself !
I cannot do without my norning tea.
Kent, I enjoy the entire Grey family, Earl, Lady and the Prince of Wales. But Lapsang Souchong is my fave. Love that smokey creosote taste.
you just make me feel peaceful ... always peaceful.
:)
Style points for your suave post. I'm a Russian Caravan tea aficionado, myself, excellent tea for camping. Up way before sunrise, tiny snoring Cub Scouts in their tents. I make a cup of tea and sit down to watch the brilliant stars behind the black silhouette of the trees.
Dips, a cup of green tea sounds really good right now. Maybe I'll join you.

Moana, that morning cup is so important, isn't it?
Mother, we could have a piece of your cake with a cuppa my tea and enjoy them both in peace!

Gordon, the Cub Scouts always slept better than us old Scouters. I'll have to try the Russian Caravan. Sounds intriguing. Thanks for the compliment and the image of the stars.
This is lovely. I appreciate tea in the afternoon or evening, but first thing in the morning I do need that "monumental push" that is coffee.
Faith, I hear you. Many's the day I start with coffee and calm down with tea later in the day. Thanks for stopping by.
Yes. Just so. A co-worker gave me empty teabags you can fill with loose tea...I have a cup or two of Formosa Oolong each day. Yum.
I love tea! Too bad most cafes don't brew tea correctly. They always use warm (instead of boiling hot) water to brew the tea.
If a cup of tea was a poem. Coyote is the poet laureate of tea.

Awesome post!
absolutely true - tea at any temperature.
i drink earl grey all day, not many cups because i dont care about the temp - i just like having it near. coffee is ok to start the day (1 cup) but i find it requires food to feel complete. tea is total all by itself.
warmly written and warmly rated.
darkside, what a good idea. Loose tea is so great.

icemilkcoffee I know what you mean. I don't often purchase tea when I'm out probably because I like the way we make it at home.
GM, thank you for the magnanimous accolade. Would that I could read at the inauguration next week. . . . although we didn't elect tea as president.

tim4change, there are partial cups of tea in all temperature ranges around here from time to time. Tea does seem more forgiving of that, doesn't it?
COS: OK, soon as I write this I'm going in and make a large cup of Constant Comment. I got hooked on that tea when I was still a teenager. It is not a tea for the serious tea lover, but I am just a good ole country boy at heart. Let's see, in I go in the kitchen and rummage a bit I will find Constant Comment, Earl Grey, orange pekoe, green, and Louisianne for iced tea. Hardly gourmet heaven, but it works for me.

Liked the evocation that tea pulls from you. Very nice.

Your post just made me start a new pot....of coffee. I don't know why I don't drink hot tea. Not enough kick I guess. I drink Iced tea, no too sweet. Twist of lemon.
I liked your post very much.

One pleasant part of my day is the minutes that are mine while I rinse my teapot that I made and boil my water and set out to make sweet chai tea with cream.

Even the 4 year old "gets it" to leave me alone for that time. And if I hide in the studio, I even get to drink it.

I loved your graphic, too.
Monte, my mom turned me on to Constant Comment only she and I refer to it as "Constant Complaint" which for some reason cracks us up every time. I like the little orange pieces in it.

Michael, I'm with you on the not-too-sweet iced tea. No sweetener, lots of lemon for me.

ePriddy it's amazing what the little ones "get" sometimes. Enjoy your 4-year-old. My baby turns 18 in a couple of months. Thanks for the compliment.
for me it's Tetley tea- I love it
2 bags 8oz of boiling water, half and half and a tsp of sugar
life is good
hyblaean, sounds like a worthy recipe. Nice and strong, like you!
The first time I was served tea, I was 21. I will never forget the experience. I remember every detail, and still have a thing for those old fashioned China teapots.

Yes, tea calls us to a higher plane than coffee, or that has been my experience, on many subsequent occasions.

Nice evocative post!
I love tea. I love coffee. I love you. I don't know how to rate.
Hey Rich, the thing about tea is, well, there's a lot of things about tea. Nobody is as amazed as I am that so many of us on OS have such a warm relationship with it. It's even good when camping with Cub Scouts according to Gordon Wagner. Maybe we should have a camporee!
Mikelk, thanks for the love! Rate me the same way I rate you, with that little thumb thingamajig next to the colon next to the word RATE. I'm glad to see you stopped by.
