The Turkeys’ Revenge on fingerlakeswanderer

Rate: 27 Flag

LOOKIT!!! It's a Wild Turkey!!! copyright (c) 2009 CoyoteOldStyle

Lorraine Berry, aka fingerlakeswanderer, had a bicycle accident yesterday. She was out on her first big bike ride of the year and had gone about ten miles. The peepers were peeping. The sun was warm. The day was glorious.

She saw a bunch of male turkeys strutting around, fanning their tail feathers, posturing for the benefit of nearby females. With spring mating season upon them, they were working hard to impress the females with their maleness so that the turkey population would continue. The females, however, were standing off to the side oblivious, pecking in the dirt for edible morsels, impressed not at all.

Lorraine laughed and shouted to the turkeys that they were foolish. She zoomed past them, the males continuing to display the signs of their potential prowess with the hens and the females continuing to be unimpressed.

She rounded a curve a little too fast. She knew it was too fast. She knew that there were potential problems with inertia taking over and throwing her off the bike when Sir Isaac Newton was in the driver’s seat. Lorraine achieved flight, whammed headfirst into the turf leaving a 4-inch divot.

She says the EMTs were hot. My surmise from that statement is that she’s going to fully recover. She’s battered and bruised. Nothing’s broken. But she wants you to know that the bike helmet probably saved her life. She has a lot of soft tissue bruising but it could have been much worse.

Please take a few minutes out of your day today and send fingerlakeswanderer a message of encouragement. I know she’ll be happy to hear from you. And remember: when riding your bike, always wear your helmet and don’t laugh at the turkeys during mating season. Apparently, they will have their revenge.

OMG! Thanks for this funny story about a not-so-funny incident.
Off to send a pm....
Thanks, Gary. I know she'll appreciate it!
::SNORT::

Sorry, Lorraine. :-D

So, they're no longer content just to try and give us payback for Thanksgiving?

Geez, I hope they never develop opposable thumbs or we're in a world of trouble.

Thumbed with an eye on the turkeys.
Ms. Coyote: thanks for the info. I will pm her too.
Bill, that's why I posted that helpful photo showing just how sneaky the turkeys can be with their camouflage and stealthiness. Never turn your back on 'em I always say.

Mr. Mustard, thanks, I know she'll appreciate it.
How generous of you to share this tramedy. Rated for writing it so well and being such a good friend, too.
one handed typing
stoned on pain meds
ouch
feel lucky
thank god for bike helmets
cartouche, she'd do the same for me. Thanks for thinking of her.

Lorraine, go back to playing Scrabble one-handed. I'll send the nurse with another dose of muscle relaxer.
From FLW's partner: You all are great! Please know that any bad karma from this incident is being erased by some really, really good drugs. Best to all...
I'm glad she's well. As funny as people may think they look, one should never take on speed, gravity and motion without protecting one's noggin. My son is NOT allowed on his bicycle without a helmet and no one gets in my car without a seat belt. Without seat belts, I would not be writing this. (Ok, Ok, insert joke now.)

Hey FLW,
Jaysus wept! I turn my back on you for a minute and you're getting into trouble again! That 'll learn ya to mock one of the most stupid creatures ever to walk the earth. Maybe this will cure your headaches, that is, once your head stops hurting. Get well soon hon!
(Thanks Coyote)
to laugh or not to laugh ... sometimes I laugh when I'm nervous or scared or shocked ...

hmmmmmm ....

will do, COS ~
Thanks for the heads up (no pun intended, believe me). Off to give her a message...
Bike helmets are a beautiful thing...wiped out myself through my biking years. This is an amusing slapstick story, but I also empathize and feel for Lorraine. Hope she is going to be healing soon and is enjoying her pain meds.
TRAIL RIDER TAKES TUMBLE AFTER TAUNTING TURKEYS
I just ride my bike day before yesterday. I always wear a helmet.
Everyone should wear one.
Be well, Lorraine.
Thanks for this COS.
Turkeys can be tricky, after all.
one thing. iwas on the road. lucky my helmet hit dirt.....
rstiene, take good care of her. (I know you will)

Blue, when we talked this morning, that was the message that came through. Wear your helmet!

hatchetface, that was my take on turkeys, but they seem to have scary psychic powers in this incident.

Ann, yes, this was frightening and that's why I had to make fun out of it. I'm so glad she's okay.
"one thing. iwas on the road. lucky my helmet hit dirt....."

OMG. One blow to the head, and she's channeling ee cummings.
My mother-in-law is famous for laughing when people get hurt. Had she been standing near the trail, she would have been bent over laughing too hard to call 911. I fell down the steps at her house once and she spent more time on the floor than me. I think she's watched too much America's Funny Home Videos or something ...

:) hahahahah~
Victor, thanks. Positive thoughts and messages are good things.

Leonde, she's told me that she's resting and I told her to let people wait on her. I hope she'll be mended soon.

Mission, you be careful out there, too! And watch out for turkeys.

hatchetface: HELMET HITS HARD, HUSHES HURT (good thing we're not journalists).

Lorraine, you are fortunate indeed. Sending you more hugs . . .
It could be worse. She could be channeling Walt Whitman. "o me, o life, o bicycle"
i will respond to notes when i can use both hands. not ignoring well-wishers
I hope you're feeling much better very soon, FLW!
Brought down by turkeys! As hatchetface says, the stupidest creatures. Glad the helmet was there to save you. I used to ride without one in rush-hour traffic (bike was my main commute vehicle for years), but fortunately I always seemed to land on my ass when shit happened. Get well.
PSYCHIC TURKEY ATTACKS RIDING WRITER.
WOULD-BE JOURNALISTS SCRAMBLE FOR HEADLINE DEADLINE
ktm and GeeBee, thanks for your kind thoughts. They're important.

FLW, go lie down and wave at the well-wishers as if you were the Queen of England. Isn't it time for more medication???

just took some
happy trails
Thank you for this post!! I need to know that everyone is staying safe (especially after Natasha Richardson's accident) so I can continue reading their posts. Incentive to stay alive and wear a helmet!

Larraine:

Sorry to hear about your off, but COS says that it looks like you will be OK, if bruised and battered. I know a lot about getting thrown off horses and motorcycles and I can't say any of it is fun.

I have always ridden my motorcycles wearing a helmet and that saved my life. Glad you were wearing yours! Get well and I am holding you in my prayers.

I will also post this on COS' blog page but just wanted to be sure that you know I am concerned about you.

Monte
dcvdickens, those are words of wisdom, to be sure. Thanks for stopping by.

Kent, thanks for weighing in with the rest of us would-be journalists.

Monte, thank you for the good thoughts. We need Lorraine around for a long time. I'm glad she was wearing that brain bucket.
Would-be? You mean I'm lost in the woulds and didn't even know it?
I'm afraid so, Kent. Lost in the woulds without a compass. It's sad when that happens.
I'm so glad to hear that Lorraine is ok! That's awful!
Great writing about a not so great incident. Glad to know she seems okay. Rated
Alas, I think "below the fold" has gone the way of "broken record".
onecorgilover, she assures me that she's really sore, but not broken.

junk1, thanks, I just wanted everyone to know she's doing okay.
hatchetface, take a stroll over to my post on analog open salon for more retro action. I think of below the fold as meaning below the limits of scrolling a page. It's just such a good term I won't give it up. Like broken record.
Lorraine, after reading your recent posts and now this I can only say that you are not dull! Feel better and be thankful for helmuts and the wisdom to don them.

Well done, Coyote.
Thanks, Lea for your encouraging words to Lorraine. She's a good friend.
'She says the EMTs were hot.'
I have to ask ~ Was this the first comment she told you about the accident? If so, there are safer ways to check 'em out ... just stop by their unit station with a batch of brownies!

Seriously, I hope she is reating well and back on the bike soon.

rated for the love of one OS to another (COS to fingerlakeswanderer)
Thanks, George. You made me get a little teary. No, it wasn't the first thing she said. The first thing was that she was glad she was wearing her helmet. Me too.
I know how much Lorraine loves the springtime, but tell her that a bicycle helmet is not designed to be used as a plow. Especially not with her head in it. Glad to hear she'll be OK and I'll bet I know what's planned for Thanksgiving dinner.
Michael, I spoke with her a little while ago and she's very sore but otherwise in one piece. Send her a PM and remind her of the designated usage of the helmet. That's really funny. Oh, and I hope you had a wonderful birthday by the way!
thanks for the alert, Coyote, I'll send her a message right away
I got up this morning. more sore today than yesterday. and, to top it off, computer has crapped out. using rob's. go read his account of being in binghamton yesterday. it was brilliant.
I'm probably going to be scarce as I try earnestly to recover. I keep thinking I can participate in blogging, but I cant.
Love you guys.
Roy, I know she'll be happy to get a message. Thanks.
FLW, please use the time to rest your body and make it well. We care for you and we'll be here ready to read you when the forces of nature and computers have ceased conspiring against you.
COS, just came across this. I'd wondered what happened to FLW, so thanks for explaining. My old man was a sometime dispatch rider during the war, and the only way he'd let me ride a motorbike when I was a kid was if I was wearing a helmet, long before it was made mandatory. I always did -- and I'm pretty sure it saved my life (although some would hasten to point out there was brain damage....)

Hope, if she's reading this, that FLW knows we're thinking of her.
Boanerges1 I know she's checking in on the thread here from time to time. And I also know she's very pleased about all the positive thoughts coming her way. Thank goodness for that helmet!
Sorry to hear about the accident! But at least the EMTs were hawt...heal quickly, and enjoy the drugs while you can.
O gawd. I'd forgotten how funny this was. I was looking for Lorraine today on another matter and turned up this post. This is your funny side, bring it around more sweetie - miss you!
