OS Meeting of the Minds

Rate: 33 Flag

A couple of weeks ago I received a private message from hatchetface saying that he was going to be in town and did I think it would be interesting to meet face to face without our avatars to intercede. My only condition was that he not bring his hatchet to the meet-up. We set up a time to casually run into each other in Harvard Square, Cambridge in front of the Out of Town News.

He was easy to spot since he was the only OS-er in Harvard Square that afternoon with a black backpack. Seeing as it was coldish and had been raining all day we hurried off  to Peets Coffee and Tea for coffee and promptly found that the only place to sit was outside on some very wet benches. We discovered through a rambling conversation that was loaded with hilarity that we had walked paths that were strangely parallel. He lives in Rochester, NY. I once did. He went to school near Park Square and on Huntington Avenue in Boston. I once worked in those same areas at the same time. I like to sing. His mom likes to sing.

The similarities were uncanny.

I had arranged for us to meet my husband for dinner so we finished our coffee and headed for the train. The Red Line took us to Central Square, Cambridge and we walked a couple of blocks to what is probably my favorite Chinese restaurant, Mary Chung's.

There I introduced him to my husband and to the house specialty Suan La Shou Chow. This is tender dumplings filled with gingery pork and sitting on a bed of mung bean sprouts. The whole thing is doused with a hot chili and garlic sauce. Hatchetface was an instant convert.

The three of us sat there for a couple of hours talking science and politics and giggling uncontrollably. At some point, it was decided that we should document such an historic meeting of the minds.

hatchetface was determined to retain some of his anonymity. Unfortunately, since I had requested that the hatchet not be brought to the meeting, he had to improvise. His hands were roughly the right size and shape, but lacked that metallic flare.

The tea pot had the required metal fabrication and showed off that "one-eyed Jack" look, but wasn't exactly the same. So we abandoned that and, throwing caution to the wind with the fortune cookie wrappers, we posed for one last photo taken by my husband.

hatchetface, you're welcome to come back and visit any time!

I just love this Nancy. I hold up my hand and shout out cheers for meeting a OSer. Looks like you all had a great time.
Good pics, by the way.
Wow - that looks like fun!
Hey Mission! We did have a great time. Hours of laughter. Thanks!

Owl, it was a blast!
OS meet ups are the bomb!! Glad you all had a grand time.
That Chinese food sounds amazing - I love rural life but I miss the variety of food you get in a big city. It looks like you guys had a brilliant day/evening.
I'm jealousing. Jealousing. Super a lot. I wanna have Chinese with you and your husband and have tea...and and and...xox
way cool... the both of you.
That is as lovely photo ;0)
Michael, I expect to hear from you next. Didn't you miss motorcycle weekend in Laconia?

mamoore, Mary Chung's is an amazing little unpretentious place and the owner is always glad to see us.

Robin, you are more than welcome ANYTIME! So no jealousing, 'kay? I saved lots of hugs for you.

Mr. Mustard, we got a little damp in Harvard Square but it was fun!

Dorinda, thanks! We all had a fantastic evening. I guess it shows!
Thank you for this, it made me smile big.
I always feel wistful reading accounts like these of OS meetups. I doubt I will ever attend one. My online persona is so much more witty and willing to be a buffoon for a laugh than I am in real life. I think I'll settle for THE LEGEND, THE MYSTIQUE...THE BONNET.
ah..what a great meet up. I was just about to post on meeting Myriad in her garden. What a great community we have here.

The food and conversation sounded equally tantelizing.
:)
Nice to read about your meet up in "our fair city". Rated.
Ah, Cambridge. My first husband and I used to visit someone who lived there... I mostly remember the restaurants he took us to (no names - and this was many decades ago...)

Sounds like fun. JKBrady and I had a meet-up a couple days ago. I'm gonna blog about it as soon as I find (or replace) my camera cable.

One of these days we need to have a giant meet-up...
dicea, thanks! I love that I made you smile!

Cindy, you would have really enjoyed yourself and I think that what made this work was that there were only three of us at dinner. That way we could all take turns laughing at me because I'd had far too much caffeine!
I am so jealous that you guys got to meet up! Hatchet is so cute and of course we knew how beautiful you are, coyote. I am close to you, too. Maybe you can come and visit one day before winter comes back Rated
Janie, we had a great time and great ma po tofu too! Can't wait to hear about your meet-up.

OE, any time you want to come up and hang out in Cambridge, let me know.

Myriad, I lived in Cambridge 30 years ago and when I moved back to Boston, most every place I had frequented was gone. Get that cable soon, though. I'm looking forward to the photos!

A giant meet-up would be outstanding! How about an OS Burning Man?
Love to see OS Mind-Meld action! So glad y'all did this...
junk, some times the planets just align and plans work out. We should have a regional event some time!
Nice! I love the big reveal at the end.
Lonnie, yeah, mind-meld is a good description. Live long and prosper!

Rob, thanks, I'm glad the photos came out that way!
Sounds like great fun. I may be wrong but I think that is a resturant mentioned in Robert B. Parker's books. I will sluth that one out.

Glad you two got to meet up. I am a long way from nowhere but there is an OSer or two in Cleveland if we can ever connect when my feet will let me. I think it would be grand fun to meet other OS folk, but until then the internet will do, With PICTURES, of course.

Monte
OS burning man - very cool, er, hot idea. I even know some people who have experience in this general area... (Will the burning man have one big eye? And a coffee cup?)
Monte, I think you're right. Mary Chung's is a fixture with MIT people and since my husband is one of those, he introduced me to the place. Let me know what you find out.

Myriad, yes to the cuppa, but please let him have two eyes!
It's always nice to have a face-to-face. Looks like a good time was had by all, which of course is the most important part. :-D
Oh, cool! A meet-up. I'm jealousing, but not much. More over the food, which looks to have been fabulous! Arent' OS meet-ups fun?
You deserve a good time! Great pics and great post.
What a good looking couple of REAL faces! Nancy I tried telling H.F. what a handsome fella he was but he would have no part of it.
False humility! Hmmmph! :-)

Bill, it was so great to meet and be able to talk in real time. I'd do this again.

Rich, any time you want to go to Mary's let me know. Except for Tuesday. She's closed on Tuesday.

Thanks, Zuma! It was a good time.

Blue, he's not just a handsome fella, he's a nice one, too. Keep telling him!
Good for you both! And that last photo is adorable. Glad to see both of your smiling faces. Very sweet and it's so great that OS people are meeting each other!!
Fantastic pictures - so full of joy.
coyote - you are gorgeous. and hatchet puts me in mind of bono, who, i might have mentioned a few times, i loved so desparately in my yute.

thanks for sharing.
dcv, thanks, the evening was even funner than the photos!

annette, thank you!

jane, thanks for the compliment! I fell off my chair when I read "yute." Are you related to Joe Pesci?
This is way cool, Nancy -- You are both absolutely beautiful. Thanks for posting this.
sounds like another great meetup, thanks for passing it around
Roses, cool describes it perfectly. Thanks!

Roy, this was like meeting a member of the family!
What great photos, but without the two of you they would have been missing something, a whole lot of laughter! Opps, I mean the three of you.

Thanks for the share. Now to go see if I "know" Hatchetface's posts yet...so many writers, so little time!
Next time you have a meet up, go to the post office, find my picture and take me along.
Hey Buffy, yeah, check him out. There's a lot of diversity and depth in hatchetface's posts.

Ric, are you the counterfeiter or the bank robber? Next time I'll photoshop you into one of these. Or maybe that's a project for you.
Thanks!
Ahhh, this is just great!!! There are so many OS folks I would just love to meet! Good for you guys!!!
That was sweet; I'm happy to hear of such a positive meeting. I have not been to Cambridge since around 1982. I was hitchhiking up and down The East Coast doing my On The Road thing, and I wound up staying at a Frat House at MIT, and working for a little while at a place called The Wurst House. I didn't have the grades to go to Harvard, but I sure dug hanging out on The Harvard Scene.
An enjoyable read. It was good to know that in spite of the “one-eyed Jack” look, hatchetface's other eye is alive and well.
Wicked cool! That was pissah!
Every time I read about one of these meeting it makes me feel great! You obviously had such a great time and I'm so glad you did the picture at the end.
Hope today is full of fun as well,
Sharon
Cathy, there are lots more OS-ers I'd like to meet, that's for sure!

mikelk, perhaps we crossed paths with you when you were in Harvard Square! And believe it or not, the Wurst House came up in conversation.

Yeah, Kent, I was glad to have confirmation that hatchetface does indeed not resemble the Batman character Two-Face!

Bill, you speak Bawstin!

Sharon, it was so fun we've given a standing invitation to hatchetface for him to come back and visit again. Thanks!
“The Adventures of Strangers on Harvard Square”
- by C.O.Style

It is wonderful to read that strangers can meet and giggle uncontrollably about their similarities in life. This is a great tale of strangers no more.

- rated for the reveal
Ahh, you met up right in my stomping grounds! Give me a holler next time there's a meeting of the minds!
Meeting of the minds indeed! I felt like a poseur next to the likes of the brilliant Coyote and her genius husband, Wile E. (Not his real name). We managed to solve many of the worlds problems over dinner but the trip across the street to Toscanini’s to sample the ice cream of the Gods erased all memory of the plans and programs developed. I felt like one of the lotus eaters faced with flavors like orange chocolate, gingersnap molasses, and don’t even get me started on the Guinness ice cream!
Is Mary Chung’s the best kept secret in Cambridge and it’s surroundings? That’s probably the best Chinese food I’ve ever had...forget the probably part. Next time I’m going for the “mysterious flavor chicken” no matter the consequences!
Long live the Triumvirate of the Wicket Smaht.
Or the alternate title, "Strangers on a Red Line Train," but George we weren't strangers for very long!

Shaggylocks, you're on!

hatchetface, Toscanini's was and is always great. So many flavors, so little time. I'm actually amazed that the two scoops we took home to our daughter got to her mostly intact except for a little melting. My husband introduced me to Mary's and that reason alone would have been enough to marry him! That place is a jewel. By the way, Wile E. says you're welcome to visit any time.
Meet-ups are the best! This is a great account and hooray to hachet for showing his handsome face finally! Such courage! And your pic is beautiful too - sheer happy! Boston's my town, though I haven't lived there in far too long (and never will again, having become totally de-acclimated) but I am home at least once a year. Perhaps I shall come a-callin!
Kellylark, I'd be glad to see you! Let me know when and we'll have a meet-up, too.
you guys look like you are having alot of fun, Thanks for sharing the moment with us!
Julie, it sure was a lot of fun and I'm happy to share it with you!
