Craving the Carving

Rate: 17 Flag

The count of lighted jack o'lanterns in one place, namely Keene, New Hampshire's downtown, stood at 29,068 this past Saturday night, October 17. Crowds estimated at 70,000 (more than double the city's population) descended to witness this event, featuring a Keene Pumpkin Festival record number of the carved vegetables.

You have to start early building traditions. Even a 2-year-old can wield a spoon to clear out pumpkin guts.

For my family this nineteenth annual pumpkinfest is held as traditional as any holiday on the calendar.

Some folks enjoy the activity so much that they figure it's a good thing to replace the guts in the pumpkins so they can scoop them out again.

It is a controversial technique, to be sure.

Other more experienced hands aren't convinced this is necessary.

It's so cute! Photo Copyright (c) 2009 CoyoteOldStyle

But all pumpkin carving artists know that, whatever techniques are used, the results are worth it.

It's important to test out your jack o'lantern's candlepower before delivering your creations to the Pumpkin Festival.

When you get to the Pumpkin Festival, don't be intimidated by the huge displays of lighted pumpkins. Find a safe and happy corner for yours.

The crowd moves slowly through the chilly dusk as volunteers move with purpose and butane lighters to ignite the candle inside of each jack o'lantern.

It's important to admire your work and ignore the camera.

Downtown Keene, NH transformed into a magical Pumpkin Central at dusk on October 17, 2009. Wish you were here. We had a ball!

Many thanks to my daughter and her nephew (my grandson) for being the subjects of this photo essay.

Great pictures. Thanks! It was almost like being there...
Thanks, Kent. It's quite the spectacle. Even after many years of going, seeing all those lighted pumpkins in one place take my breath away.
Wow. I've never seen anything quite like that. Thanks for sharing it.
What a great idea! Thanks for showing us.
If you get the chance to venture up here, Kathy, it's really worth it. Thanks for coming by!

Pilgrim, you're welcome. With the Sox out of the playoffs, we have to console ourselves somehow. Maybe pumpkins are therapeutic?
Very nice pictures. I forgot about Keene's Pumpkin Fest... your pictures capture its beauty and tradition. ~R~
this looks wonderful, nancy! maybe next year we can plan sooner and take a trek to new hampshire - gods knows the leaves were gorgeous this weekend for it. i love the tiny pumpkin with the sweet smile. i might copy that one. i am all ahead of myself and thinking about christmas already (go read it, if you have time).

i cant wait till i learn to take and download my own pics, so i can make posts with them, instead of stolen google images.

thanks for sharing.
what a cutie Coyote!! :D
I particularly enjoyed your granson's take on the correct way to carve a pumpkin!
There is a farm not too far from my town where they do this every year (they don't get the volume of jack-o-lanterns you guys did, but they get a pretty good amount). The kids went one year, found it boring, and never wanted to go back again.

But every year, we have to have at least one pumpkin carved. :-D

Thumbed. Thanks for the fab pics, Nancy. I personally love these kind of events. The creativity is astounding.
looks like lots o' fun
Hey Chuck, Boston took our world record away a few years ago but they've since stopped doing this with their half million people and Keene is still keeping on even without funding from the city. Thanks for stopping by.

jane, mark your calendar for next year. I'll find you a free place to stay! We bought pie pumpkins this year because I could get five for the same price as one big one. My daughter made that sweet smiley one. I'll tell her you like it!
Hi Brian, Yes, it's an incredible sight.

Julie, everything is new when seen through his eyes. And they are super cute!

bluesurly, you know it! He even took a few bites to taste test it.
Bill, it's too bad the kids found it boring. I'm fascinated by the varied artistic interpretations you see as well as the odd marriage proposal spelled out in pumpkins. There are lots of activities beyond the jack o'lanterns, too, like live music, crafts booths, a costume parade and lots of fair food. They might get a kick out of all that. Thanks for the kind words on the photos. The subject matter was pretty fun.

Roy it is lots o' fun and even better when you get home and you're not cold and rubbing elbows with a crowd!
Holy!...........I have never seen such numbers!
Gary, they set up long rows of temporary shelving down the length of Main Street and I think there was at least one other tower like the one in the photos. Plus there were pumpkins stuffed into the common and lining the streets. It's an amazingly festive and low-key night. (Two if you count townie night on Friday.) You'd love it.
How cool! We don´t have this pumpking carving here in Buenos Aires, at all (well, we don´t have Halloween just to start with...). I imagine that, when all the pumpkins are lit, the whole place must smell of sweet homemade pie, yummy!
Beatiful pictures and beautiful young artist.
Marcela
These are cool, Style! Nothing better than carving Jack-o-lanterns of an autumn evening!
That is the most amazing pumpkin display I could have imagined!
Marcela, the whole downtown smells of pumpkins and candles. Perhaps you should try it and start a trend there!

Rich, we had a great time and as long as we kept the little one strictly on spoon duty, nobody had to worry!

Owl, the photos don't do it justice. You can walk around for hours and be newly amazed at every corner. Thanks for dropping by!
Totally beautiful Coyote! Thanks for sharing with us! (Rated for *Magic*)
This is so precious. I loved the taking the pumpkin innards out, then putting them back in so that they can be taken out again...very unusual technique.
