The Daily Scrawl: People's Picks (no Pans) 4/21/09

Rate: 58 Flag

The Scrawl is trying to get back to a more regular schedule. Thank you all for your contributions and support.

The Daily Scrawl is an attempt to give writers more exposure to readers and vice versa. We try to look beyond Editor's Picks, ratings and views. The selections are by the People, from the People, for the People -- and that means YOU. (See previous selections here, here, here, or here.)

To get your favorite posts on the Scrawl, include them in your Comment and I'll add it to the body of the Scrawl. (Thus will the Scrawl crawl as the evening wears on). Or else, you can PM me, and I'll include it in the next Scrawl.

Tuesday's Picks:

Sally Swift: Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day : "Never Again" An essay to sear the soul. Remembrance. Commemoration. Homage. Mourning. But most of all the pledge: "Never Again."

Dr. Ashiq Hussain: World Arbor/Earth Day. That the author is writing from Kashmir, where they know a bit about religious hatred, brutality, murder and war, makes this a particularly compelling piece. Shalom.

Dogwoman: White shores are calling ~ You and I will meet again . . .
A moving commemorative to the author's mother and a remarkable testament of the people she left behind to carry her memory.

Hobolawstudent: Torture Sublimation: Taylor Swift, Sublimation and Sex Even if you don't know who Taylor Swift is (and I don't) and even if you don't have a daughter (and I do), read this thoughtful post about property rights in a patriarchal society -- and purity balls.

emma peel: Are you love-based or fear-based? The title scarcely does justice to this thought-provoking piece about the real problem of a sexist basis for math and science phobia in girls and women and their continuing under-representation in these fields. Who can forget Larry Summers when he was president of Harvard?

Leonde Delmere: Online Ads and Murder A chilling reflection on the recent "Craigslist Murder" in Boston.

Mama Lou: Freeze Frame Medusa Mommy she is not. A honest human being with a wry eye for her own imperfections and a gem of a writer, yes.

NolaGodiva: Watching a horse die Graphic and unsentimental. Particularly poignant after the news of the deaths of 21 polo ponies in Florida.

Laura_S: Black Dog Stunning artwork, mesmerizing video about the black dog of depression.

iamsurly: Really, I Understand. The Rules Just Don't Apply To You. "This needs to go in the next batch!!!!!!" Lisa Solod Warren

Rosenkavalier: status quo ante War games and some Seventh Day Adventists. Keeps you hooked till the end of the engagement.

Y Heron: It Whispers Cunningly "Musings on acedia -- slothdom, mental laziness. Excellent read." like~water

Steven Rowley: Unglued "New blogger, great writing." Verbal Remedy

Bianca James: Stuff I ate in Cleveland Don't ask me why I liked this piece, but I did. So there! There's something to be said about accepting simple gifts and joys, especially in Cleveland.

angrymom: My Dad Knew About a Lot of Things, Except Possums Wonderful memory piece about a man who knew about differentials and torque... and what to do about possums.

bluesurly: Skunk Tongues And all you ever wanted to know about mephitis mephitis. Woven in masterfully with the lightest of touches with Dr. Wonderful and Bud and serious science. Great read.

William Morley: Korea in Photos: Spring has Sprung Great pictures, with some quirky one thrown in, to keep you on your toes. Delightful photo-montage.

Risa Aratyr: April's Moon " Lush, moody and gorgeous. Highly recommended." like~water

Additional Vox Populi:

Scoubidou: Garped  This piece about high school, writing, writers, literature, a wonderful teacher and billiard balls and celestial spheres is a wide-ranging delight. "Bummer" from OESheepdog translates to a recommendation, I think.

jimmymac1025: Wasted " Jimmy's got a gift for really laying a scene and a mood without overdoing anything." Mama Lou

Thank you for catching at least five that I particularly enjoyed and thought should receive more coverage.
Bummed that Scobidou didn't get mentioned.
Wow! So many I'd have missed without seeing this! Thanks tons!
Fantastic as usual. I'll be back with a couple of recommendations as soon as I'm home from work...
Thank you once again for taking your time to do this, and also to those who contribute! I saw many here that I enjoyed already, and many more that I enjoyed after seeing them here.

Thank you for bringing them to light!
Thanks once again for this wonderful service.

I'm glad you listed hobolawstudent ... she's brilliant & a passionate lover of chocolate cake!!!
Thanks for the pick- it means a lot to me!!!

I'd also like to suggest JRDog's "Red Lamp of Presence" for spirituality, and Con Chapman's "All-White Porgy & Bess Grarners Ten Tony Nominations" for great humor.

Time to go catch up on suggested reading!

Thank you so much --on behalf of the millions of voiceless victims more than me-- for highlighting what TPTB inexplicably did not.

I would suggest more people get to know Del Stone by starting with his recent post Hey buddy, can you spare a dime? Sucker!. He describes an encounter with a homeless man and his ambivalence about whether or not to believe the man's tale of woe and give him money. It's a subject that resonates with many of us. Del is an exceptionally good writer not yet known here.
JT Chicago actually takes you to a ball game at Wrigley Field. In this post---you are not only there---you know why. For the baseball fan and most important---for the non baseball fan as well.

Thanks! I was wondering how the heck to figure out the best way to find the best writing. Great idea!
Thanks Mess. I really enjoy this.

The funniest post I read in months was Tinkertink69's

"By the Time You Read This I'll Be in a Nigerian Jail Cell"
My hat is off to you, and I bow deep, because I at last see what this takes. I am in the midst of a one-time effort to actually read and comment closely on all my favorites. It is taking me weeks, and I will not let myself post until it is done.

And it is changing me, improving me, helping me to see how OS is "the keys to the good car", a pure-d wonderment -- and how I still have a lot to learn about writing.

Thank you for what you do. I now add you to my Great Post of hundreds of comments, with a special notation.
