Tomorrow I Turn 40

Rate: 12 Flag

Well, today is something of a milestone for me. It’s been hanging on my mind for months now and now it’s here. Today is my last day as a 39-year-old. Tomorrow I turn 40.

I’ve gone through a wide range of emotions about this event, ranging from vague depression to petulant defiance. After all, it isn’t like my warranty is about to expire and things will start to fall off. I’m not Binkley’s dad from Bloom County, whose nose fell off when he hit the big four-zero.

Then I stopped and did some thinking. I felt the same way when I hit 30 and back then my life sucked. My friends had all moved away (Andrew and Allison had moved to the other side of London as the commute to Gatwick Airport every day was killing her, John and Emma had got jobs in Dubai and even the gifted but daft Paul was working in Kuwait) and I was living with my parents. My romantic life was unromantic.

As a result I spent my 30th birthday sitting on my own in a pub feeling depressed. The barmaids took pity on me and gave me a birthday kiss each, which was nice, but also a bit sad.

Tomorrow I’ll be waking up in my house, with my wife next to me and probably at least one cat on our bed. I’ll get dressed and my wallet will contain a picture of our grandkids. When I come back from work (and my salary is almost twice what it was when I was 30) Kathleen and I will go out and have a romantic dinner in a superb Vietnamese place that we discovered.

My life has totally changed. For one thing it’s 100% better thanks to this odd thing called happiness...

Happy Birthday tomorrow! 40 is the new 40, don't you know? It's weird how much of a milestone it is - but I had achieved so little when I turned 40 that it has beeen a relief not to have to try to achieve anything at all! Whereas you have True Love and Toffee! And you're friends with me! See, you're a lucky guy, Cymraeg. Have a blast tomorrow.
Hm, if 40 is the new 40 then what's the new 50? Wait, I'm channelling Tink now, no that's a bad thing...
Toffee has taken to sitting on my back at 3am and purring. Then she starts dribbling as she purrs and then she shakes her head. Apart from that life is great! And yes, I know how lucky I am, I still can't believe it sometimes! I'll have a great day!
Hu. I have no idea what I did on my 30th. On my 40th, I don't remember. Of course my 45th, I spent it riding the Insanity on top of the Stratosphere in Vegas. Now that's a party place.
Well someone's had a busy decade if you're carry photos of grandkids before 40! Happy Bday and gather your strength for the next 10, it's pretty intense!
Happy birthday Sweetheart! You will have a lovely birthday and continued celebrations with friends and family.
Concentrate on how much better you feel now, as opposed to how you felt a decade ago. I hit the 4-0 a few years ago, and nothing has fallen off, so far.

Happy Birthday Cymraeg!
Isn't it amazing what a good woman can do to your life. Along with better pay too. 40 is no different than 30, 40 no different 50, but I'm 56, and I think there is a hell of a difference between 50 and 60. Happy Birthday my man.!
You're a baby! My eldest daughters are in their mid-30's and I am considered a young gramma! Ain't denial great?!?

Go have yourself a wonderful, fun-filled 40th!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I hope my 40th birthday(next year!) will be better than this one, heck, almost losing the house days before my birthday was wayyyy too much fun, and something I'm still dealing with.

40 better be a breeze! :D
Ha! You're still a young pup. I hit 6-0 next year. I'll be officially too old for a mid-life crisis.

My experience is the same. 30 sucked. When I turned 40, we were expecting our 2nd child. Much happier.
Happy 40th...it's way better being 40 than the alternative :0)
Ocular - thanks, that sounds like a blast!

Gabby - I'd love to say how busy, but sadly they're not my own work. Kathleen and her ex husband adopted three children and after they divorced I became their step-father without having changed a single diaper!

KCJ - thank you darling! The conjunctivitis today is a bummer but I'll be a brave little trooper!

Thanks Shiral!

Thanks Scanner, that's reassuring! Lol...

Thanks Cathy, I'll do my best!

Tink! Don't lose the house - did you look in the back of the sofa?

CC - I think I feel some maturity arriving. No, wait, it's just gas.

Buffy - oh it's FAR better than the alternative!

Mypsyche - thanks you!
Happy birthday early, you rookie!

The 40's are the best time of your life. You are nowhere near over the hill and you aren't getting all of the cranky old people ailments yet. You'll be just perfect.
Happy 40th Cymraeg! Hope you two have a wonderful dinner :)
Happy Birthday! :-)
