This Felt Illegal

Rate: 1 Flag

route 80

I don't think I've ever seen a scenic overlook on a major highway that did not have a "Scenic Overlook Closed Dusk to Dawn" sign...until yesterday. I was driving on I-80 about ten miles east of the Delaware Water Gap just after sunset when I noticed that the scenic overlook was missing a "Closed Dusk to Dawn" sign. Jackpot! Was it actually open 24 hours, or did someone just remove the sign? Who cares?! This was my big chance. Venturing in, I felt the rush of doing something illegal, but at least I wasn't alone, as there were a few other motorists enjoying the vista. I snapped a few hazy pics, including this one. You can see the Delaware Water Gap in the distance, which is the V-like space in the ridge slightly above centre and to the right. But what I like best about it is the way you can see a few uninterrupted strands of headlights as the highway winds its way over the hills, everyone making their way back to the city.

By the city, you mean East Stroudsburg, right?

I spent a night in East Stroudsburg once. I was camping in said Delaware Water Gap and got a tick. I had to go to the hospital to get all of it out. Good times.
Wow, Sam, that's terrible! But just as Pennsylvania's citizens cling to guns and religion, our bitter, bitter ticks cling to victims, requiring professional removal. Actually, that photo is looking from New Jersey toward PA, so East Stroudsburg is in the distance (on the opposite side of the mountains) and the headlights are headed toward NYC. Though I'm sure there were also some people headed for the Stroudsburg area, too...there's actually a cool record store downtown there.
