After the last couple posts about EPs, this week we travel to the opposite end of the spectrum. Recently, Merge Records released the 3-disc, 49-song Supercluster: The Big Dipper Anthology. The recently-reunited Big Dipper, although never commercially successful, was a bit of an underground supergroup, consisting of former members of the Volcano Suns, the Embarrassment, and Dumptruck. I picked up the anthology (which includes the majority of the band's total output) due to its flawless recommendations: Jon Harrison at Little Hits did an enthusiastic Big Dipper write-up a few years ago (http://www.littlehits.com/archives/2005_08_01_index.html), and "The Best Show" on WFMU's Tom Scharpling is a big fan and wrote the anthology's liner notes. At $15, it's a great value, and it comes in a nicely-designed digipak. They played a few shows in NYC and Boston recently...I caught them in Brooklyn last Friday night, and one of the highlights was "She's Fetching," which does a great job of keeping one foot on the rocking side of the fence and the other firmly on the winsome side. It's available as a free download from Merge at this page (just above the track listing): http://mergerecords.com/band.php?news=true&band_id=137. Check it out!

Big dipper was probably one of the first CDs I ever bought (okay, not THE first, but one of the first 5). They had a great live show.
