In this writing workshop and citizen's blog I'm exploring various short forms, often from a satiric angle. My interests include politics, culture and the human comedy; old and new media; social theory and urban life; the commercialization, corporatization and tabloidization of everything; sustainability; Unitarianism (UU); coffee; and writing (sorry, I mean providing content). Turtle stamp is from Tandy Leather. Interested in republishing a piece? Contact drigney3@gmail.com.

When Did THIS Happen?

When Did THIS Happen?

By Daniel Rigney

When did conservatism become the opposite of conservationism?

When did Rush Limbaugh become a climate scientist?

When did NRA become the “well-regulated militia” stipulated in the 2nd Amendment?

When did corporations become persons?

When did universities become football teams?

When did civil servants become “bureaucrats”?

When did the word “bureaucracy” come to exclude corporate bureaucracies?

When did the Democratic Party become the “Democrat Party”?

When did Jesus become a Republican?

When did Robin Hood become a villain?

When did the phrase “redistributionist policies" exclude policies that redistribute resources upward?

When did the phrase “class warfare” exclude class wars directed downward?

When did oil and gas companies become “energy companies”?

When did dirty coal become “clean coal”?

And did all these things happen before or after pork became “the other white meat”?

Just wondering.  Do you have a WDTH or two of your own?

P.S.: Jimmy Fallon, why not start one of your famous twitter waves (you call them hashtag games) with the question “When did THIS happen?”?

Great list Daniel. When did progressive taxation become class warfare?
when did handicap parking tags become fat persons parking tags...
Thanks, and good point! When did "redistribution" not include redistribution upwards?
A, I've incorporated your suggestion above into the text. Thanks again.
When did job liquidators become job creators? When did reading, walking and having a conversation become obsolete? When did compromise become giving in to the Devil? When did reality crazies become superstars? When did waterparks become the beach? Thanks for coming up with this game!
Pam, I can see that I'll have to do a Part II on this one just to acknowledge and "retweet" these great suggestions. Thanks!
The answer to all your questions is depressingly simple:

When? When political operatives managed to sidetrack voters with "family values" issues, and they ignorantly started voting against their own economic interests.
... a frequent answer to the question posed in the book title, "What's the Matter with Kansas?" The author's name slips my mind.
When indeed.......and WHY?!
When did right-wing "fundamentalism" virtually disappear, replaced by the broader and more inclusive "evangelicalism"?

When did predatory lending become "financial services"?
