In this writing workshop and citizen's blog I'm exploring various short forms, often from a satiric angle. My interests include politics, culture and the human comedy; old and new media; social theory and urban ethnography; the commercialization, corporatization and tabloidization of everything; sustainability; Unitarianism (UU); coffee; and writing (sorry, I mean providing content). Pharaoh Boasts: “I Built This Pyramid”

Rate: 3 Flag

By Daniel Rigney

Archeologists and archivists around the world, working independently of each other, have recently discovered several long-buried quotations from some of human history’s greatest achievers. The discoveries have coincided with the colorful festivities of the Republican National Convention in Tampa this week, where thousands of self-made men and women have gathered to celebrate themselves in an arena built largely by organized labor with public tax money.

Mitt Romney's convention theme: "You did build that." Achievements are individual, not communal.

Even as the convention was being choreographed, Egyptian archeologists last week stumbled upon a stone ruin engraved with the last words of the pharaoh Ozymandias, who died while overseeing the construction of his own burial monument  by thousands of slaves.

The Pharaoh’s last words:  “I built this pyramid. The slaves had nothing to do with it.”

Other recently discovered quotations echo this same theme of self-sufficiency and self-aggrandizement:

Julius Caesar: “I built this city.”

William Shakespeare (puckishly): “I created this language.”

Thomas Jefferson (in jest): “I taught myself everything I know.” (Jefferson went on to found the public University of Virginia.)

John Tyler: "I built this plantation."

Leland Stanford: “I built this transcontinental railroad and created jobs for thousands of Chinese employees.”

John D. Rockefeller: “I built this oil.”

Donald Trump: “I built this tower, and I grew this hair."

Ayn Rand: “I built this cult.”

Koch Brothers: “We built this grassroots movement.”

Bernard Madoff: "I built this pyramid scheme."

Alfred E. Neuman: “I built this magazine.”

Excuse me. [two fingers to ear]

We’re being told now that news of similar discoveries is arriving from all directions. Word of the discoveries is reaching the floor of the Republican National Convention as Mitt Romney prepares to deliver his nomination acceptance speech.

Are you an amateur archeologist or archivist who’s recently stumbled upon a long-buried quotation from a famous self-made man or woman? If so, please report your self-made discovery here.

Love it! Very clever, Dan! If anyone cares, "I Built This Wonder Bra"! R
That must have been a big undertaking, as you've suggested in several previous posts. Thanks!
Starship: "We built this city on rock 'n roll."

Sorry, couldn't resist. Will try to think of something more serious.
Jeanette, I nearly mentioned this song. I'm old enough to remember a time when Starship was Airplane. Thanks for the memory.
Great words by Julius Caesar. Read his biography, srsly it's awesome:

Let's see - No one ever helped my build my ideas about sex. I did it all by myself.

Wait. That doesn't sound right. Oh well...

Great post.
Thank you, Dariu5. I see you're a spambot selling fake high school essays. What ever happened to robot ethics?

Thanks, Keiko. I'm guessing you may have gotten a little help on that!
The non-sarcastic instances of this meme just make my blood boil. So nice to get to laugh at it for a change. It's better for the lining of the stomach, not to mention the blood pressure.
I know! I always wondered first about the state of mind of the speakers, and second who do think they are talking to; it is amazing. Very clever and funny, my friend. R
Kathy, I used to boil over right-wing cliches. Now I make fun of them. My doctor says my blood pressure is back down in the human range now.

Thanks, Thoth, and so glad to see you're posting again after a writing vacation. The very notion that any human being is entirely "self made" is bizarre to me too. But there is no idea so bizarre that we can't find millions of people who believe it and repeat it robotically.
