In this writing workshop and citizen's blog I'm exploring various short forms, often from a satiric angle. My interests include politics, culture and the human comedy; old and new media; social theory and urban life; the commercialization, corporatization and tabloidization of everything; sustainability; Unitarianism (UU); coffee; and writing (sorry, I mean providing content). Voucherizing Halloween Candy

Rate: 3 Flag

Satire by Daniel Rigney

The fake news just gets weirder and weirder as we Americans approach our electoral Halloween season.

Cartoonist Brian McFadden, in his Sunday New York Times comic strip (8/28/2012), pictures a right-winger on Halloween night giving out trick-or-treat vouchers that kids “can use to buy candy on the open market.”

For some on the right, voucherization (along with tax cuts) is the solution to every problem, from Medicare costs to education. Why not, then, voucherize Halloween candy as well, as a way to address the issue of handouts to the undeserving young?

Don't snicker. Similar candy-coupon approaches to the provision of healthcare to an "undeserving old" are just an election away.

If you live in a Far Right house and would like to participate in this year’s “Halloween Candy Reform” movement, just print and clip the bottom half of this post and tape it to your door on the hallowed eve of all saints. This will help assure that no unsaintly souls come to your house looking for handouts that night...

least of all those millions of kids dressed up in hilariously homemade and hastily improvised Big Bird costumes, accompanied by their grandparents on pre-voucherized Medicare!

Clip and tape this sign to your front door if you support “Halloween Candy Reform”:

Snicker Snicker....you got this one just right!
Many thanks, Zanelle. I wasn't sure about this one, but I thought I'd put it up anyway. Not everyone even knows what voucherization is, but I figured it might provoke thought about the idea that vouchers are a panacea. Thanks for noticing!
Cheney and Rumsfeld privatized much of our military supply functions, turning them over to Halliburton and Blackwater. Just wait till Myth Romoney privatizes FEMA.
Thanks, Tom. Mitch has been ducking questions about FEMA all week, walking back earlier comments suggesting that he would turn disaster relief over to the states .

Meanwhile, Sandy is the widest-diameter Atlantic storm on record, and it's blowing through several states at once, necessitating a coordinated trans-boundary response. No wonder Mitch is ducking the question. So far, Obama is demonstrating solid presidential leadership in the face of crisis.
Keiko, your Romney theory explains a lot. Thanks! And yes, OS has been on the fritz again. Seems better this evening.
