Marijuana: The Gateway Back

Rate: 0 Flag

For years we've heard tall tales from the government about the dreaded "gateway effect" of marijuana. 'Try it and soon you'll be hankering for a stronger high. Shortly thereafter, you're a junkie on the street desperately seeking another fix.'

I won't go into the many reasons why this is an obvious fallacy based on specious logic. I'll leave that to your own common sense.

Personally, I believe that marijuana can have the exact opposite effect; that smoking or vaporizing cannabis can actually become the saving grace in a hard-drug addict's or alcoholic's life.

Anecdotally, I've seen this played out time and time again. I hear from and meet people on a weekly basis who use marijuana as their "anti-drug", to appropriate a phrase from the prohibitionists. These are former hard drug addicts and alcoholics who quit using those poisons and now smoke pot as their only "vice". They're able to live normal lives and many credit their usage of marijuana with actually saving them from certain death.

I'd like to write an article in High Times about this subject but I need more first-hand accounts.  Are you or do you know anyone for whom marijuana was the gateway back? Post your story in the comments section below.

I was thinking the same thing and in fact am going to be suggesting this for someone I know who is struggling with alcohol. He lives in California so maybe he can get a prescription to use it legally and hopefully later in the year it will be legal for everyone over 21!
marijuana has absolutely saved me from the desire to use/abuse alcohol and prescription drugs. AA ain't shit. hit me up if you want to know more.
Hey Danny Jayden Blaze here., I Was severly addicted to drugs and alcohol and it took everything from me including my 3 children after 3 yrs of failed attempts at sobriety I managed to get clean, I stopped trying to quit the marijuana along with everything else..and when I did i noticed huge changes, i was able to sleep all nite i could tolerate the cravings alot more and it got me through the first year and got me willing to do the work and the steps Marijuana alone does not keep me away from substances but it does play a huge part in the formula, Relying on a higher power, the 12 steps and meetings are a huge factor in it all also...I have alot more to my story this was just a lill blip if you wanna know more you know how to get ahold of me...Im glad your writing about this and im Happy to see you bring lite to this subject because alot of ppl are still ignorant about all of this and they say marijuana is a DRUG and your not clean if you smoke..ive done DRUGS ...marijuana is not its a HEALING HERB Thanx Danny hope to hear from ya

I grew up in the 60's and I lived in a world where most of my friends and family smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol long before trying cannabis! They were THE "Gateway Drugs" for most, as they were "legal" and basically "accepted" since you could use them in public (most places even as minors). As 60's kids grew older, alot became alcoholics. I have suffered the violence of being a "battered wife" of an alcoholic and had to raise my son on my own, after our divorce. I saw many people that I grew up with, become violent and depressed. So many women I know were battered or raped by drunk men. (Sorry, I am not being sexist! I don't personally know a man that was battered or raped by a woman!) I should know! I was in counseling with these women for years! So many divorces. So many children left without a father and/or mother because of alcoholism. Since then, I have witnessed many alcoholics recover by using cannabis and even they have remarked how much more peaceful and happy they have become by doing so. I remember at one of the" High Times WHEE (World Hemp Expo Extravaganja) Festivals" at Bill Conde's place in Oregon in the late 90's, there was a man named Felipe who was leading the children's play area most of the weekend! Felipe, whom I met at the 1996 Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam and I wish I could remember his last name, was an alcoholic who recovered by using Cannabis! He went on to inspire many others do the same and he was a kind soul with an awesome smile . It was wonderful seeing how much the children and parents loved him, there! He said that his life finally had purpose and that using cannabis was the best way to "recover" from drinking alcohol! I believe him!
There is a great post about this subject in Mike Cann's blog. Marijuana can help people get over alcoholism and then ( since MJ isnt as addicting) for true happiness they can taper that off too. A clear mind is a wonderful thing. I like to get a little fuzzy now and then tho as a clear mind can drive itself nuts without a little wooziness to balance it out.

High there, This is absolutely amazing that I sat down and after typing in danny danko i find this, asking for a story. Well believe it or not I just finished hand writing a letter to the ny,ny address about this very topic. I am going to send it no matter, look for the name guacamole! Any way: I am 30 now-the first time I was put in the puzzle factory or looney bin whatever you want to call it was a result of a week long acid/shroom trip coinciding with back to back page and plant concerts and the jesus complex or so it is known(though i was jesus). That was twelve years ago. I lived somewhat normally until at age 25 I suffered another physchotic episode induced by diet pills and alot of partying and boos, no food, no water, no sleep, working all day etc. etc. I was found meandering albeit truly naked on a resort island where I worked during the summer(life or death man)-arrested twice in two days and sent to jail for nine days-then I moved down south a couple years later where I was on, four seperate occassions-put away in a mental hospital-once for walking out on a breakfast tab(wearing only gym shorts this time, no money nada)-what right did they have to profit off of swine anyway and eggs it wasnt their life i was eating!-ALCOHOL INDUCED Another time for trespassing-drinking someones passion fruit juice out of a fridge in a house that i had, hallucinating, believed, i had been invited into.-ALCOHOL COCAINE INDUCED Then the next time about a year later i thought i was hitler.-ALCOHOL COCAINE INDUCED-then i took a bath in a public fountain-ALCOHOL-then i showed up to work six hours early barefoot and ready to play golf-ALCOHOL. It has been ten months since and I have finally realized that I am allergic to alcohol. While on the medications they charged me for($$$$$$$-BASTARDS) I had severe back pain and became so depressed to the point i was suicidal-everyday I struggled to leave my shitty apt. With a knife to my throat(crying now)or a belt wrapped around my neck. If it wasnt for the uplifting euphoric stress relieving weed I started smoking and my family I would have fuckin happily purchased a shotgun. Sincerely guacamole.
