This is a pretty interesting story that I would like to share and see if anyone knows anything about this sort of scam.
I don't know how they found her. He had a page on FB that he had her look at that showed him to be a nice looking (very attractive really) guy sitting in a serene setting with his dog. (How did he know that she was a big animal lover?). She is a 64 year old woman (friend & neighbor of mine) and she told me that he and her started "chatting". She got into the relationship to the point where at first she said "what would he want with someone like me". But he was telling her that he wanted to take walks on the beach with her, make love to her, etc.
It was just what she had been aching to hear. She had been feeling neglected by her husband of 20 something years so she ate it up and decided even though she had never spoken to him in person that she wanted to leave her husband and join him per his invitation. BUT 1st she needed to send him $5000 so he could come to her after he settled some obligations. He said he would pay her back as soon as he came as he was going to get reimbursed for the 5 grand. He just needed it for payroll so he could complete a job he was working on and then he would be paid, blah, blah, blah. She sent the money via bank transfer in an account.
They continued their email "love affair" and he continued to tell her that he was coming to her town so they could be together but something always comes up that prevents him from coming. In the meantime her husband found out and tried to convince her that it was a scam but she has moved into the other part of the house and won't have anything to do with him. Her life is becomingdestroyed as she no longer wants to stay in the home and is waiting for her "lover" to come and sweep her off her feet. She firmly believes his promises and is waiting for that moment.
