Sending good thoughts to Columbine today

Rate: 24 Flag

April 20 can be a tough day out there. Everyone reacts differently, which is, I think, the most important thing I learned about trauma. Everybody needs something different. Some people need a hug, some people need to be alone. I hope each person gets what they need.

My sincere blessings and prayers.
My heart goes out to all involved.
Good thoughts to you, Dave. It was a pleasure meeting you the other night; perhaps we can learn from the tragedy you chronicle so well.
Hopefully they will all take a small amount of comfort in two words that we can all offer up to them:

We remember.

Sending good thoughts and prayers to all who need it.
Yes, prayers, thoughts and healing vibes sent to all of them today.
I can't wait to see the Oprah airing today Dave.
Although it's already been taped, I hope it catapults the book into the stratosphere. It deserves and needs to be read.
Well said. They are all in my thoughts today.

I remember.
Dave, while today is the anniversary of a horrible day in our history, I am conflicted, because I'm seeing the name of one of my OS buddies EVERYWHERE, and I'm insanely happy for him at the same time that I am reminded that we need to do better in this country when it comes to guns and mental illness.

Best to you and to everybody.
Lots of hugs and prayers. You are a good soul Dave. I'm only sorry I missed you in Coral Gables.
Thanks. Great feedback here, as usual.

I hope they're OK. I'm going out for the commemoration at 5 p.m. No telling what that will be like. I tend to be surprised by my reactions to these things.
I'm with Bill......we DO remember. May needs be met today.
They'll never be forgotten, but always remembered.
My heart goes out to all the families.
I saw that you were bumped from Oprah today as she decided that she didn't want her show to focus on the perpetrators. I hope she will reschedule your appearance.
Best wishes and good thoughts to you too, Dave. It's got to be a very trying day.
I read the review of your book in Newsweek with interest the other day and saw your interview on Rachel Maddow just now. I look forward to reading the whole book, but your idea about different people having different needs is an interesting one. As a psychoanalyst I have found that people need what Robert Stolorow refers to as a "relational home, " like what you were describing on January 31 in your blog. Or as another songwriter puts it "I'll be with you when the deal goes down." (Dylan)
Thanks, everyone.

It's been one long day. I'm doing a last interview now--on commercial break. My publisher packed the day, but I told him I needed three hours off for the commemoration ceremony. That was definitely worth the break. Very moving. Val Schnurr was really something. I'll try to get a post up about it tomorrow.
Dave, your touching and interesting appearance on the Maddow show underlined what a tough day yesterday was and also helped educate the public about the tragedy. It's a little startling to see an OS neighbor come to life on TV, but your Maddow segment made even more clear why your book is important. An impressive achievement.
Hey Dave, I have such mixed feelings about your book. It is compelling, well written and gripping. On the other hand, it has hauled some well-packed skeletons out of the closet for me. I was teaching at Sheridan High School, 5 miles away, when the Columbine incident occurred. We were all so stunned. Many of my students were well acquainted with kids from Columbine, some had attended their prom with friends that weekend. I later moved to Jeffco School District and have taught there for the past 8 years. (Wheat Ridge) I know many Columbine teachers. This hit so close to home for me.

It was a "John F. Kennedy Assassination" moment for teachers in the area...perhaps nationwide...I don't know. But I developed a lot of stress following the shootings that manifested in neck and back pain for years. Nightmares, check. Depression, check.

You wonder as a teacher: would I be able to tell if students were this violent? I perused your book for some indication of the teachers' take on the kids. I was relieved to read of Judy Kelly, the English teacher, for whom Klebold wrote his violent vision of a mass murderer. But though she called his parents, told the guidance counselor and consulted with him...but still nothing stopped the train wreck.

This year, this book brought it all home. I think I have been a zombie since last week. You still wonder, would I see it coming? Could I help? I love teaching, and I love my kids. I hope I never have to be closer than I was. We've had bomb scares and a couple of lock downs, but nothing like this since.

God Bless the survivors. God bless the families. God bless the faculty and staff and all who were hurt by this tragedy. May we all be delivered from such a fate.
