Denver snowstorm: Time to dig my car out?

Rate: 7 Flag

Denver got 1-2 feet of snow in the city in the last 36 hours, depending where you live. I got around surprisingly easy last night. It helps to live on a major road.

But I woke this morning to one car after another from the neighboring building spinning their wheels two floors below. (My heat is screwed up, so I sleep with the window open.) Some went on and on and on.

I felt bad for not dragging my ass out of bed to help. I'll help people once I'm up.

I'm in the alley, which can be even worse. It's on a moderate hill, with us angled so we have to head up. Who designed that?

There's over a foot out there, and still coming, and I don't think it will melt before I leave for the airport at 9 a.m. tomorrow. I'm appearing at the big Texas Book Festival Saturday, and I sure don't want to miss that. So I better dig out today. I bought a shovel during the huge Christmas storm two years ago when we had over 30 inches. My shoulder is going to get a workout, because it's really heavy, sludge snow.

If I'm really ambitious, I will try to get it onto York St. in front of my apt. That should be clear sailing tomorrow, if I shovel that spot out, too. That could be several hours of shoveling, though.

Dave, my house is on a cul-d-sac north of town. Big houses, lots of real estate taxes paid every year. Ive lived there since 2003. If I get plowed out today by the city, it will be only the 2nd time since I bought the place that they bothered to visit with the plowtruck.
There is so much snow I had to shovel out the doggie door so the dog could get to the backyard!
When I lived in Chicago, people would dig out their spot and then put a chair, a lamp, some old piece of furniture in it when they left. God have mercy on your soul if you moved it and took their space. I haven't seen that in any other city.
Tim, you are not likely to see one again, by design. Most communities here have a policy of not plowing side streets, only arteries. They wait for the sun to melt the side streets.

It's so warm and sunny here, that it's not deemed worthwhile to invest all the additional money in plows. That's a conscious decision, we could change any time. The deal is that you struggle on the side streets to get to the arteries, or you miss a day of work or whatever.

After the xmas (2007?) storm, Denver started a new policy, that under certain conditions--certain amount of snowfall expected during certain months--they would mobilize additional trucks and hit some of the side streets with them. But they can only get to a fraction.
and lol on the doggie. though not so funny if you're there. my buddy in boulder said the same. they had over two feet, and his pooch is about one foot.

he had to shovel a route for the dog to poop, or he said the dog would have been very content to just do it in the house. ouch. i know this dog, and he would.
Good luck Dave! Don't give yourself a heart attack in the process of shoveling out!!!
haha. thanks, blues.

i couldn't believe how easy it turned out to be. i shoveled a few minutes, which wasn't even necessary. luckily, so many cars had been through the alley by then. tomorrow morning might be worse again, but i'll try to park it on the street.
Dave, darling! Delegate the shoveling to some teenager and pay him/her. Too much strain on the heart before boarding an airplane. Take care of yourself. [we might move to Paonia, CO next year. I'm looking forward to it.]
yep, winterwonderland. did anyone photoblog it somewhere on OS?
We flew in from Portland to Denver last night. Was glad to get into town before too many runways were closed. We have about 30 inches here, in the southern suburb. Hope you get where you're going, in good shape.

Deborah, there are some very cool people in Paonia.
Warmer times are soon to come...in the meantime, wind tomorrow and a lot of water all over the place.
yup, mary. it is going to be one sloppy halloween.

that's why i'm running away.

glad u made it in undertow.

i actually got around fine today, though i didn't have to do the early morning thing, and i live right on an artery.

i'm not sure why everything closed. a buddy was at the gym, and said he was supposed to be in class then, but his college closed. school was closed, but the gym was open. hahaha. it was quite full. we all made it there just fine.

of course, you have to have your priorities.
damn, i did get stuck on the way out friday. but i dug out with my gloves and got to the airport in time to make my flight.

back in denver now. sunny and warm, all the snow is gone. almost all.
