The paragon of animals is still without a clue;
In this regard, there isn't an exception just for you.
Our ego is a wondrous thing, but though it’s hardly blind,
It often can't perceive what's not already in the mind:
Projected apperceptions form a filter that we use;
By analogy with the way we feel we understand the cues.
So, though everybody tries to, the whole damned human race,
There is no art to read the mind's construction in the face.

Lovely surprises, indeed! Life keeps telling us that we don't have the lock, and sometimes it tells us by giving us rare gifts from places we never expected. I am constantly amazed that things are as sweet as they are. My friends are such gems! My child is such a shining thing, and my grandchildren so fabulously clever! People can love, people can do good things, even though they can hardly get out of their own way. We truly have no idea what any of this life of ours portends, and yet, every month or so, I see another example of how sublime we can be. Such amazing creatures, to be sure.
