I have always tended to take the road less traveled. Sometimes I get lost; sometimes the road is under construction; and sometimes the road leads nowhere or everywhere. Regardless of my choices, I always learn, and never regret the journey.

New Year's Predictions for 2111 (Poetry Open Call)

Rate: 24 Flag

Future4

Scientists estimate the earth to be about 4.5 billion years old, with humans showing up about 200,000 years ago in the Middle Paleolithic period in southern Africa.  About 70,000 years ago, humans migrated out of Africa and began colonizing the entire planet. They spread to Eurasia and Oceania 40,000 years ago, and reached the Americas approximately 14,500 years ago.

In the grand scheme of things, we showed up about 11:59:59 PM, at the end of the day, on a 24-hour clock. We are all bipedal primates from the species homo sapiens, which in Latin means "wise man," or "intelligent man."  Are we wise and intelligent?  I think the earth's jury may still be out on that.    Even though we are a relatively new addition to the planet, it is not unreasonable to assume we will be around for another hundred years.  Or is it?

This poetry open call will take some imagination and test your skills.  The year is 2110, and we are about to enter 2111.  As you look over the past year of 2110, what are your predictions for 2111?  What will the world be like in 2111?  Will we even be here?  Give us your best guess as to the type of world we will have in 2110, and what you hope for in 2111.  Use any poetic form you like, and use your imagination.

My humble attempt is below.  Thanks.

 January 1, 2111 – A New America

With the Tea Party firmly in control,

And the Fox News’ People’s Party running second,

I wish for the  return

Of the old Republican and Democratic parties.

Of course they were crooked as “all get out,” but

At least we had a chance to elect them.

Not like today,

When focus groups select a President.

Fox News said it is more representative

Of the people’s choice

But

I don’t know about that.

I am also not wild about the new laws

That go into effect today either.

Where am I going to find the money

For the new cameras in my house.

I just put out a bunch of money,

To hook my computer to

TSA’s central command post.

NSA is coming next.

I am not happy about that

New Amendment to the Constitution.

Fox News said it is necessary

To protect us against terrorism.

We haven’t had an act of terrorism

In over fifty years.

Now the “land of immigrants”

Is the land of “nobody gets in.”

White, Anglo-Saxon, heterosexual males

With engineering or science degrees

Are still allowed in by NSA, but

Everyone else…forget it.

When we used to have a free Internet

Things seem to be easier.

Now, it takes so much time

To clear through Fox News and NSA before publishing.

It is bad enough that we have to have

the computer chip in our arm scanned everywhere we go,

now our National ID cards are matched against

the Fox News People's Database for the "Patriotism Factor."

 I hope next year brings freedom;

Freedom to disagree;

Freedom to move around; and

Freedom to be free.

OH GAWD, there will still be a Tea Party 100 years from now? Ugh. :)

Fun Open Call, I'll have to ponder this. Thanks Dave!
You've posed a puzzler. I'll have to give it a good deal of thought.

Maybe you should take a laxative. But seriously, I love this stuff.
Sad and scary all at the same time. Will anyone know the difference?
Okay Dave.. I will post this up..:)
Rated with hugs
Sounds like a challenge.
I will give it a shot Dave.
I share your views on the extreme right and teaparty. It is up to all who feel as we do--us all--to stand hard and fight as hard as we can against right-wing extremism. The battle IS NOT won by them!
Interesting open call...I"ll ponder.
I hope yours doesn't come true : )
I can't imagine we won't have figured out a better way to live peaceably by then. Maybe if we spent as much time on ethics and morals and goodwill as we do shopping, maybe...? (notice how my strong statements peter out to a weak "maybe") We can do better!
OK..gave it a shot--still new here, not sure where I am supposed to put this..so am putting it here>

Punctuation is a bit odd, but meant to set the pace and emphasis)

On Entering the year 2011~~A Holiday letter

Hello good friends. Hello readers
I’m writing this from~~ my room at Cedars.
I have lived long~~due to science
And my body’s running on a new appliance.

I have mem’ries, ~ and predictions
I can see now,~ all our afflictions
If I could change it—stop all this ailin’
You can bet I would not vote for Piper Palin!!!

We have witches.. in the Senate
And the Pirates …took the pennant
Our Supreme Court ~~is Judge Judy
Who shouts if you are derelict in duty!

When we enter ~ “Twenty ‘leven”
We may find we’re ~~not quite in heaven
But we can step back… and be more certain
That there’s still much we can do to keep from hurtin’!
(Chorus)

Let’s turn BACK~ oh friends and readers
It’s pitch black! Where are our leaders??
I can’t hack—this world of bottom feeders
It’s time~ to use~ that time machine we had..
The one that sends us back ~~before it gets so bad..

Let’s not make~ all the mistakes we did before
We have a chance~~ to change it and do more
Oh please~~the year is almost up
Don’t make me stay here ~I might throw up!

Dearest friends~~ and loyal readers
Let us not~~ be quite so eager
Let us think first…..let us vote well
Or we really just might find ourselves in that hell.

I don’t want to~~ understate this
But it’s awful~~and I hate this
This is your future~~~And it’s fading
You really have no clue just what you’re trading!
@Sartori1: This is terrific! Copy and paste the whole thing into a separate post on your blog. Title it something like Dave's Open Call. That way, more people will have a chance to see it.
@ L--I did do that, thanks!
LOL--my first time to write 2011! And I didn't mean to...despite all my proofreading. Title is supposed to be "2111". Uh...oops.
Yikes! I'm feeling a deep chill in my bones. Great poem, Dave. I'll give it a try, but I'm not sure what I might conjure up! R
I had too much fun writing for this open call.

The United States of Fox. Spooky at best!
Okay, but it won't be pretty.
I'm a poor poet, Dave, but I can appreciate the thought and effort that went into thinking about 2011 and beyond. I have a tough time thinking about Thursday.
Oh I like the wish for FREEDOM. That seems so basic and so fragile.
BE FREE BY ENSLAVING YOURSELF TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER!!!! SO SAYETH THE BECK, SO SAYETH THE LORD, AMEN!!!

:D
I cannot think of a hundred years from now, Dave but I appreciate those who have the imagination that can. Your predictions sound scary to me - like a version of 1984 in a way. I'll rate the poem on its merits alone and hope you are wrong.
Wow pLease don't let the tea partybe around in a hundred years. Rated !!
Great Idea.... look forward to seeing all the responses!
The petulant wave,
I wave back,

The compromisers wave,
I wave back,

I wave back,
I wave back

I move on

oh boy, love that "Patriotism Factor"...three cheers for the red, white and blue!

great challenge, will give it a try!
