Some E. E. Cummings for FeatheredThing

Rate: 11 Flag

FeatheredThing posted this open call for poetry.

I love E. E. Cummings. Back in November, I actually attempted an essay to my wife for our wedding anniversary – using some ideas and feelings from this poem of his.

Pretty Town

anyone lived in a pretty how town

by E. E. Cummings

anyone lived in a pretty how town
(with up so floating many bells down)
spring summer autumn winter
he sang his didn't he danced his did

Women and men(both little and small)
cared for anyone not at all
they sowed their isn't they reaped their same
sun moon stars rain

children guessed(but only a few
and down they forgot as up they grew
autumn winter spring summer)
that noone loved him more by more

when by now and tree by leaf
she laughed his joy she cried his grief
bird by snow and stir by still
anyone's any was all to her

someones married their everyones
laughed their cryings and did their dance
(sleep wake hope and then)they
said their nevers they slept their dream

stars rain sun moon
(and only the snow can begin to explain
how children are apt to forget to remember
with up so floating many bells down)

one day anyone died i guess
(and noone stooped to kiss his face)
busy folk buried them side by side
little by little and was by was

all by all and deep by deep
and more by more they dream their sleep
noone and anyone earth by april
wish by spirit and if by yes.

Women and men(both dong and ding)
summer autumn winter spring
reaped their sowing and went their came
sun moon stars rain

David, I remember well your post about your wife. I remember being very moved by your beautiful words and expressions of love for her. This poem by E.E. Cummings is beautiful as well, but I will always remember your post about her more.
I was just thinking of this poem! I love cummings' work. "She being brand" is another one of my favorites.
fine and good, is and was.
Oh my! This is probably my favorite e.e. cummings poem and one of my top three or four favorites ever along with Emily Dickinson, Yeats, and John Donne! Oh, and Gerard Manley Hopkins! See, impossible to pick just one.

But this one is sublime! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing...
Thanks to all the lovely commenters. And special thanks to FeatheredThing for the great open call. It’s been a busy day and I haven’t been able to get to all the posted poetry, but it warms my heart to know it’s there for my future satisfaction.

And odettteroulette – ‘she being Brand’ is one of the few poems that makes me laugh out loud.
I'm going to go back and read your writing to your wife, so cannot comment on that here, but e.e. ahh, e.e. Thank you for e.e.

Because of my her-story, this is an excerpt of my favorite:

"All in green went my love riding
on a great horse of gold
into the silver dawn.

Four lean hounds crouched low and smiling
my heart fell dead before. "

Ooo. That is a good one, ConnieMack. Cummings’ take on the challenge by the goddess Artemis to the hunter Actaeon. Very nice.
Then I invited my kids to help me with this week's Kitchen Challenge. Little did I realize that our cooking lesson would turn into a life lesson on perseverance and overcoming failure. brilliant
