Stop the War Supplemental

Rate: 24 Flag

The House is about to vote on another supplemental spending bill for continued and escalated wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We're not accustomed to winning in our efforts to block war money, but the Democratic leadership has delayed the vote out of concern that we will.

Here are three reasons to join with the peace movement in asking your representative to vote No: This bill funds illegal and immoral wars; it funds the IMF; and it bans the release of torture photos and videos from the Bush-Cheney years.

Republicans may vote No because of reason #2 (good for them!) and 41 Democrats have signed a letter from Rep. Maxine Waters asking for good changes to #2 (good for them! but why monkey around with a war bill?).

Democrats may try to get reason #3 removed (good for them! but why monkey around with a war bill?).

The "leadership" may stick in a cash-for-clunkers measure or other bribe to get "progressives" to vote for the war money (bribes that could be passed on their own).

But what we need are No votes on the war funding, no matter which other outrages or good measures are attached to it.

Call your Representative and urge them to vote no: 202-224-3121, or use this tollfree number from UFPJ: 1-800-517-5696.

Whip list here with contact info and updates.

This will be the lead story on the June 5th Urban Journal.

I'm a Republicrat. Meaning I call it like I see it. I figure it's pretty much futile to fight anything at this point. I got a big long laundry list of why, but I'm not looking for a fight so I won't go into. But I will wish you luck.
thanks for this post dave, and thanks to cartouche for sending me here. i've rated, but now i guess i need to go join digg and reddit, which people have been telling me i should do for weeks now.

Banning the release of the torture/abuse photos will not change the fact that horrible crimes were committed and those responsible must be held accountable.
Appreciate and respect the effort to stop the wars. It appears unlikely, however, that the supplemental will fail to pass. If IMF funding is dropped, the Republicans are back on board and it's a slam dunk, as it was the first time. The one good thing that can come out of this, though, is reform of the IMF's draconian policies. There’s a letter signed by 41 House members, led by Maxine Waters, calling for inclusion of language in IMF funding to change the way they do business. More details about this in the blog I posted last night:
