What defines me? I'd love to write this really great adventure story, but alas, it be a work of fiction. I'm a mom of one, my son, now 15 (yes we're dealing with the teenage years) my furry children I have 4 cats, 2 dogs (1 is on loan from a sick family member) and 3 chickens. I try to do the best I can at whatever I do, keep out of trouble (which never seems to work) and get as much out of life as I possibly can in the short time I'm allotted. After all, " You only live twice" ;) Well, that's me

Random Things

Rate: 1 Flag

So, sometimes I have all sorts of random thoughts run through my mind from my to do/grocery list to trying to solve the worlds energy crisis (not really, but you know what I mean) Sometimes the ol' melon picks up random songs and loops them over and over, most of the time it's "Crocodile Rock" for whatever reason, sometimes it's Disney songs.

So here in no particular order are some of the random things the loop through my brain.

While watching "Family Guy" the other night, Stewie tries to tape his mom saying she's a bad mom. Only to play back his own radio show on the tape."Everyone does it!" He says and storms off. I laughed because I remember my sister and I doing this. Then I asked my son who is now 15, if he remembers doing it. Apparently, growing up in the CD era has its down side. No cute tapes to find of your kids doing goofy voices or making radio shows on tape. You can't go back in time and hear their voices when they were little. I find that very sad. Like I've lost something I didn't realize I should have had. Do they even make cassette tapes any more?

I know most of the world’s population hates Wal-Mart, but if they closed down where would all the people that work for them find jobs? My mom works at Sam's Club, with 125 other people. That's just her store. Times that by all the Wal-Marts/Sam's Clubs in the world. Then add in the people that work for their distributors/manufacturers, etc? That's many people with out jobs. Not to mention, my mom having no High School diploma. She makes $17 an hr. Where's she going to go and find a job making that much to start? (This isn't an I hate wal-mart they suck thread so please refrain, unless you can answer the question or hire all those people to come work for you)

Cigarettes.

I'm not a smoker. I hate them really (cigarettes, not smokers), but if they can take away someone's right to smoke, then what else can they take away? I mean it's in the name of public safety right? Couldn't many things fall into that category? I had an arguement at work a few years back with a co-worker on the subject. He likes to hunt. I simply said to him today it's another co-workers right to smoke, tomorrow it could be your guns. Man you want to see someone go off. They can't take his guns, yadda, yadda. Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.(not saying people who dislike guns are stupid, just saying it's easy to take one persons rights away until it's your turn and you're looking to them for help) Look at prohibition. Wasn't that just because a few people went out to vote and everyone else stayed home?

And while on the subject, if everyone stopped smoking, where would all those workers go? Who is going to hire all of them? Who's going to pay to make up the $4+ a carton in taxes that people pay for cigarettes? I mean it's going to have to be made up somewhere right? (must add here I lost my dad's whole side of his family to smoking, so not championing it, just some thoughts on it)

What did we do with all the time we spend on computers before we had them?

Why do we always find money for something we want, but not what we need? Example, you need new socks, it's $10 for an 8pk, you don't have it, BUT you can go out to lunch during the week instead of packing and it's $5 a day. (Guilty of this myself just wondering why we do it)

Why is the right thing ALWAYS the harder thing to do?

Will the Car and bank bail out just prolong the inevitable? I mean if no one buys new cars or has a job to pay their bills, won't they still end up going out of business?

Why are certain words so offensive to people? What made them that way? Who decided what was bad and what wasn't? Who cares? Does that make the pen truly mightier then the sword?

Did you know that the beef prices are all due to McDonalds? They used to have yearly contracts for beef and potatoes that locked them in at certain prices. This year it's on a month-by-month basis (last I heard) Since you can get only so many steaks or other choice cuts from a cow, which means the rest, is burger. If no one's buying burger, then the rest of the cow goes up because it's wasted meat (the burger part). I thought that was interesting. Heard it on a local morning radio program from a guy that runs a local restaurant. I can't eat McDonalds, except for the nuggets. Haven't had one of their burgers since grade school in the 80's. Made me sick and never had one since. This includes working their when I was 16. Looks like they fill a greater purpose though.

Why do people think it's only the schools job to teach their kids? When my son was, little I taught him to read. His dad asked me why I was doing it, isn't that the schools job? I thought it was MY job to make sure my child had the best education possible. Doesn't that mean helping him out, giving him a good start and teaching him the little bit I know, so he can add to it as he grows up?

Wow, if only my home looked as nice as my SIMS. lol!

What makes farts funny? Is it really laughing gas?

Why is yawning contagious? Just reading the word makes you want to.

Why can't we do what makes us happy for a living? Instead of working at boring jobs, we don't like just to make ends meet?

Why do teachers not listen to you, when you try to get them to help you find out what's wrong with your child? When you tell them you come from a family full of learning disabilities and they insist your child is to "smart" to have one, yet he's failing all his classes.

Why is there no child left behind? Who the hell came up with this one? If you don't do well, then you fail. You repeat the grade, class, whatever until you get it right. The schools budget shouldn't depend on this. It also shouldn't depend on an end of year test. That's all they teach your children, is how to pass the end of year test. What about all the rest of the things they should be teaching?

How do they expect a teenager to know what he wants to do with the rest of his life when he grows up, when 1/2 the grown ups still aren't sure?

Why do sports icons make millions of dollars to throw a ball, but my son's teachers can just about afford to live? How about police officers and firefighters as well, while we're at it?

Why is violence more socially expectable then sex? I worked at Sam's Club years ago. There were two movies playing, Liar, Liar and Jurassic Park. Someone got mad because there were breasts shown in Liar, Liar (or something like that) we were told we couldn’t show it anymore. I asked why were breasts wrong, but a guy being ripped in half by a T-Rex was OK? We went to all G movies after that. Had the same discussion the other day. Still no answer. Son is 15, has Grand Theft Auto. He's blowing people away and goes into a strip club. DH flips out, he can't play this game, there's a strip club in it! I couldn't stop laughing. I asked him to explain to me why THAT made it a bad game? Shooting people was fine, jacking their cars etc. BUT LORD help us theirs a half naked woman dancing on a pole...where have our morals gone!

So, that's my mind wonderings for today. Enjoy. Feel free to comment if you have the answers. Thanks for looking!

Interesting thoughts. I think I read we yawn to get oxygen, or out of empathy. They did a study (it was in the Times), and found that conservatives yawn less. Not surprising. (Btw I just yawned, thinking about this.)
Thanks, the mind works in mysterious ways doesn't it? (in reference to yawns.)
