Bio
What defines me? I'd love to write this really great adventure story, but alas, it be a work of fiction. I'm a mom of one, my son, now 15 (yes we're dealing with the teenage years) my furry children I have 4 cats, 2 dogs (1 is on loan from a sick family member) and 3 chickens. I try to do the best I can at whatever I do, keep out of trouble (which never seems to work) and get as much out of life as I possibly can in the short time I'm allotted. After all, " You only live twice" ;) Well, that's me

Smile, It Can't Be That Bad!

Rate: 1 Flag

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that, I'd be able to bail out the US all by myself.

I am not a "smiler" I come from a long line of people who just don't walk around with a big grin plastered on their face. Now, that's not to say I NEVER smile, because if something is funny or makes me happy, then a grin will pop up all by itself.

Most of the time, I am just serious though. I'm working or thinking or both.

My brain is usually whirring at about a million miles a minute. Random things, like; " Did I pay the water bill?” "How are we going to pay (insert bill here) this month?" ,  "What am I going to make for dinner tonight?", What am I wearing tomorrow?" Wonder what I'm going to get in trouble for next?" " I hate that I'm supposed to be happy just to have a job, so that means my district manager can treat me like dirt and I'm just supposed to take it!” "I wonder what (insert random friend here) is doing tonight?" " I hope my son passes school" etc. All of this of course goes through my mind in less then a minute and recirculates often in random orders.

All of this is going on while I'm working at whatever I'm doing at work and I'm supposed to sit there and SMILE the entire time I'm there as well?

"Give me a smile", (to self, why? what are you going to do with it)

"Smile it can't be that bad" (It could be, how the hell do you know?)

"Smile, it will get better, I promise (really, so the fact that I busted my ass working 11 hours a day for 6 months, doing three jobs all by myself, while putting up with my district manager and his low self esteem issues, and all I got on my review is. We APPRECIATE you keeping us going when there was no one else, but you made an error on one quote and you slouch when you sit at your desk.

We APPRECIATE you keeping us going when there was no one else, but we've dissolved your position, because I have low self-esteem and you challenge my authority and think independently. I don't know how to handle that, besides trying to squash you and beat you down until you're afraid to think for yourself. Paint you into corners, so you always look incompetent to others and always appear as if you are not doing your job correctly.

I know I'm very happy to still have a job, but does that really mean I'm supposed to have to put up with being treated like shit every time my district manager is at the office (which is at least two days a week) did I mention he's only a district manager of TWO offices? I'm sorry, but my retail background says, two offices, do not a district manager make.

None of the other branches in the area will put up with his crap, so he only has the branch he started with and ours.

So excuse me, if I'm not sitting at my desk with a big freaking fake smile 8 hrs a day 5 days a week. (Oh and they've cut my hours back too, for that though I am happy because I was feeling like I lived there and just visited my family)

Is anyone else, not a smiler? Does anyone else get the "why aren't you smiling and rays of sunshine coming out your ass" comments?

Just because someone isn't smiling, doesn't mean their not happy, they may just be in deep thought, or really busy.

Feel better now? :)

The DH is a not-smiler. Worse, his neutral expression looks irritated, borderline angry, so he gets the all the time. He would empathize.
