Foodie Tuesday's B.R.A.T. diet: what to feed your sick child

Rate: 12 Flag

Around our house, when a child is sick from the "stomach flu", I dispense what is commonly known as the "B.R.A.T." diet. It is a diet of foods that help with the symptoms of this type of illness by providing some elements that tighten loose bowels and shortens the harshness of diarrhea. It is easy on the stomach and bland to the taste. And, it is always nice to offer something as a source of comfort and care.

The prescribed diet consists of the following:

Bananas, ripe and no longer green, may reduce water loss

Rice, a binder that is easily tolerated

Applesauce, made from fresh apples. Fresh cooked apples contain pectin which has stool binding properties.

Toast, also easily tolerated, contains B vitamins

There  is some dispute about this not being a particularly healthy diet to use. I recommend it just be used for one day, then introduce other foods as tolerated, into your sick child's diet. And, make sure you give plenty of  liquids, but stay away from apple juice and sweetened drinks. Pedialyte is perfect for this, in a pinch Gatorade will suffice.

And, always consult your doctor or nurse practitioner as they will be able to determine the best course of treatment. Hopefully, the illness will soon be over and your sweetheart will be back to normal, ready to play!

sorry this pic is sideways, but it still is cute!

Ah, memories of my pediatric clerkship! Recommendations tried and true.
Thanks Deb, I will pass this along to my daughter. With the flu and cold season upon us, always threatening, your information will most definitely come in helpful. For me, too, since I often have my two grandsons honoring us on weekends!
Ah, the seal of approval! Thank you, Steve!
And, Nini, it is a good thing and easy to remember. Great for frantic moms when you don't quite know what to do!
The more things change, the more they stay the same. My mother use to feed us this diet when we suffered from the same ailment and god knows how long ago that was.

Rated.
And for adults, BRATT. Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast and tea. Highly rated, Deb, information everyone should have in their arsenal.
Torman, my mom would give us Jello and 7-up, that was way back when, too!
Kathy, Thanks for the addition, hopefully, we won't see too much of this in our households this season!
Deb, we use the B.R.A.T. diet at our house too! It's worked well for both my kids. Thanks for reminding me!
I hope I don't need it, but my Grandson is probably going to come down with something, they always do. Thanks!
Remedies abound when your child ails. Thanks for the information, I always gave a lot of love also. My Best to you and family, older/exasperated
Scanner, it's always good to be prepared in advance! thanks for the comment.
Thanks, O/E, we have one down right now. Lots of love like you describe and lots of waiting on. Don't you love it?
Ah yes. I remember those days of "Mommy, I don't feel....blecccch!" The BRAT diet was very effective. Tis the season!
you are the most wonderful MOm. this diet sounds healthy and reasonable for the time that the child is ill. lvoe love love and gratitude
Good advice for the ailment you describe, but I have fond memories that when I was ill from other stuff, my mother always made me custard-- and to this day -- eating custard is a comfort food.
Cinnamon toast tastes better and a shot of tequila can't hurt!
cinnamon toast, custard and tequila (?), guess the tequila would have the same effect as Nyquil!
;)
Doctors and Greek mothers. It's the best diet and amazing how many people do not know about it.
Thanks Deb, enjoyed this. And your daughter helped too! :0) Thumbs up rated!
Thanks, Reiko and Stellaa, for stopping by! :)
Debbs4, thank you for posting this. I hope everyone is feeling better today!
