So it's my turn to pick something fun to do on Sunday cause we never do ANYTHING fun at all, it's just work, work, work all week and then guess what? Work some more on the weekend. So we always say we'll take Sundays off and do something fun and it rarely happens but yesterday, guess what? We did the wild thing and then went to the movies. Jeez, miracle can happen. So we head out for the matinee of "Funny People" which my 17 year old called an Amazing Movie. Hmmmmm. The husband doesn't really like going to see movies, he'd rather rent them and stay home, truth be told he hates to leave the house, not that he's agoraphobic or anything, just would rather not rub shoulders with the masses and he's a crusty old bastard so it's better he doesn't go out too much anyway - children and small animals beware.
So anyway, we load up on popcorn and coke [for him] and a bottle of water [for me] cause God Forbid I have too much fun and head into the theatre. Here's the upside to the recession. We got great parking and the theatre is 1/4 full! How great is that?! I love America!
We sat down and I notice immediately there is a baby sitting two rows behind us. A baby!! Since he can't drive some moronic parents must have decided to bring him to an Adam Sandler movie even though he can't talk or criticize and has no bowel control whatsoever. But what he can do is CRY. I whispered to the husband that he might have to kill the baby but husband whispered back with uncharacteristic generousity and said, "live and let live." That was so out of character I had nothing to say. But I pictured someone killing the baby so I could watch the movie without hearing him cry.

"Judd Apatow and his unappealing wife Leslie Mann. "
Judd Apatow wrote and directed this movie. His last two were: "The 40 year old virgin" and "Knocked Up." Trivia note: it is his two daughters who play the little girl sisters in the movie. And his wife plays Adam Sandlers love interest. Adam Sandler basically plays himself dealing with a potential fatal illness. Seth Rogen plays the young comedian Ira that Adam sort of takes under his wing. Both were great performances with Seth outdoing himself in innocence and timing. The husband thinks Adam just played himself and that's who he is but I pointed out Adam is now married with child in real life and husband said that's because this is who he is/was before he got married. Could be. The film does show us the narcissism that is hollywood. Sandler is really not likeable. This is art imititating life with Apatow making a movie about his former roomate Sandler starring his own wife and two daughters. Yuck.
The words Dick, Cock, Penis, Balls [especially balls] are used about 500 times during the movie which is just another reason babies should not go to movies! I would say this movie was a paean to male genitals. Every man in the movie is enamored with his own cock and balls and seemingly every other mans cock and balls. I don't see how they ever get any real work done.
There is great fun in the cameo appearances. James Taylor singing at a My Space convention; Tom, from My Space; Ray Romano; M&M in a very funny appearance. Ira's roomates played by Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman? eh, Hill was funny, Schwartzman was uncomfortable. Did NOT like his acting. Neither did I think Eric Bana as the cuckolded husband was a good actor. I didn't know whether to love or hate Ira's love interest, Aubrey Plaza. Leslie Mann, Apatows wife in real life: help me out here. I didn't like her and what was going on when she was talking really weird in the last 1/4 of the movie? Someone please explain it to me and then, if you have to explain it to me, it didn't work.
Nepotism at its unfinest.
While I laughed a lot during the movie because there is a lot of stand-up comedy routines [Dorinda, you should go see this], in the end it might be about a narcissistic director shining the spotlight on narcissistic actors, acting in his movie. I did get the feeling they were all making millions of dollars at my expense, and that didn't feel too good.
I'd say the real hero in the movie was Seth Rogens' Ira: he was generous and authentic. Compared to him the rest of the cast was kind of creepy and mean. I give this 3 stars. The huband gives it 1 1/2. It is worth going to see, just don't expect it to be great, but it will be entertaining.

The last two films I picked for the theater were busts so I can't afford another so-so or I'll NEVER get the guy to go with me again! Hee.
OEsheepdog: you're right! So concise! Miss it if you can!
