Breaking News: Tsunami due in Hawaii at 11:00 a.m.

Rate: 33 Flag

1:53pm ALL CLEAR. Mahalo and Aloha for following the Open Blog today on Hawaii's tsunami. I wonder what Acts of God await us in Colorado?

12:56pm The boats are trying sneak back to their harbors but they've closed the harbors off to them until the all-clear is sounded. We're thinking some of the boats haven't been out to sea in 20 years and might be taking on water and really need to come back in. Oooopsy! Looks like nothing big is going to hit. Good thing as I was going to live on Hamburger buns and darkness. Moving Sale continues: tomorrow.

12:35pm 3rd wave hit Oahu, they are not getting bigger than 3 ft. But they have not signalled a cancellation of the warning yet.

12:06 second wave has just hit and receding from Hilo, HI. Oceanographer can't predict what will hit Oahu and says the next 2 hours is the final window. Ventura, CA is reporting damage from their tsunami. Jeez, who saw that coming? The "Greatest Generation" is taking a break from their garage-saleing, probably eating breakfast at local diner, discussing REAL disasters. Though I shouldn't be cocky, we could still get hit on Oahu. I think I just saw Karl Rove drive by and slow down to look at our Moving Sale sign.

11:36 Flotilla of boats can be seen one mile offshore, an eerie site as hundreds float waiting for a wave or waves.

11:18 a.m. Water is now receding back in Hilo, Hawaii.

11:04 5th set of Sirens going off...we are waiting for the first waves to hit Hilo, HI. [Along with camping lantern, date stamp on camera broken as well.]

tsunami pic

Ships are now a mile out at sea for saftey.

PearlHarbor

Pearl Harbor: evacuated of all ships this morning.

10:31 a.m. 4th set of sirens going off.

10:25 a.m. Tsunami due in one hour. How it hits Hilo will determine how hard it will hit Oahu. More people gathering at local highschools. My mall remains open down the street. My teenager and his friends are heading to that Mall.

Greatest Generation: 53, Me: 0  We just sold the golfclubs.

Why hasn't the local news figured out to hunt down Karl Rove and interview him?

9:16 a.m. Two of the three CostCo's have closed due to -get this - too many people showing up to shop. Our inventory includes: 1 camping lantern that doesn't work, 1 hibachi, 1 battery operated radio with little light, yay!, food from our WWIII cabinet that we keep stocked. One teenager still asleep but will be used as servant if necessary. People are gathering at local highschools in bunches of 500.

The "Greatest Generation" continues to shop at our sale and barter. Greatest Generation: 50, Me: 0.

We are safe at 1,000 ft. above sea level. People are still not listening to advice from the News. Note to self: How much are helicopters, anyways?

9:00 a.m. 3rd set of Sirens going off. No water, mail or electricity as the day goes on, Gov. Lingle is telling us. Easy for her to say, she has a helicopter. Everyone is still driving and phoning. The one thing we are all doing is not really listening to what they are telling us to do.  All boats are being moved either onto shore or out a mile so they don't wreck.

The Greatest Generation continues to shop at our Moving sale. Nobody under 65 has shown up. Huh.

8:56 a.m. No Mail Delivery today! Am wondering where Karl Rove has been evacuated to? [He just got a quickie divorce in December...who is he here with?]

8:36 a.m.: Gov. Lingle says they will be shutting off our water. [Send water]. A bunch of elderly arrive at our Moving Sale. God Bless the Greatest Generation. The experts are saying the Tsunami waves will come in 20 minute intervals?!? How do they know this? How they hit Hilo, HI will determine how they will hit Oahu. Gov. Lingle has a helicopter at ready. Lucky her.

8:08: HECO asks: Turn off all unnecessary appliances especially electronic anythings. With a sinking feeling I see that our electricity will be turned off at some point today. We sold our grill and our camping lantern broke this morning. Send candles.

7:53 a.m. Gov. Lindle Lingle just phoned in. [I love her, hate her haircut, she makes Berta, Charlies housekeeper on Three and a Half Men look fashionable. Please, someone send an expensive hairdresser for our Governor!] She told everyone to stay off the roads [They're all on the roads]; then stay off their phones [we're all on our phones] and that all the counties in Hawaii seem very prepared [which in Hawaii means: be afraid, be very afraid. Just kidding. No, not really.]  Remember to rate this so we can get high ratings to get the cover exposure.

An elderly man just came to our Moving Sale and bought some stuff. He's not afraid of no tsunami. Apparently Tom Brokaw was right...they ARE the greatest generation.

7:33 a.m. Everyone is waiting for Governor Linda Lingle to speak. If you see her around, tell her Hawaii is waiting for her call. Ala Moana Shopping center, the largest open air Mall in the U.S. just closed, to the audible heartbreak of every teenager on the island.

"Waves will be dangerous and significant." That's all the "experts" can tell us. Anybody able to pull their Nostradamus out? Seems like he can give us better info. than our 21st century experts can.

Our Mayor, Mufi Hannuman is on the mainland. Hmmm, what did he know and when did he know it? He went to Harvard, you know.

Update 7:00 a.m. The second round of Sirens are going off. They will sound every hour on the hour. If you didn't know before, you now know now. The waves are on their way. Nobody at all can predict if the waves will be tiny, small or huge.

Update 6:45 a.m.: My husband just returned from the grocery store. Huge lines. Already out of water and ice. Everybody on the cellphone calling their aunties and uncles. He came back with milk, breakfast food, hamburger buns ???. Gridlock will happen today. Parking lots are full at grocery stores. We might lose electricity when the tsunami hits. We already sold our grill so we will rely on Hibachi's. Kapiolani Hospital has just cancelled all surgeries today. Gas stations are mobbed. "Where is everyone planning to drive to?" asks my husband.

I call my friend who lives in Kaawa on the coastline, northshore who will be evacuated to let her know she can come to our house.

Starting: The sirens just went off. At 11:00 a.m. a Tsunami, several waves in fact, are due to hit our shoreline. Evacuations are just about to start from all coastal areas. Which means all the Waikiki tourists, among others. They are taking this seriously and hope all evacuations will go smoothly. We will probably have gridlock and some panic because everyone is just being woken up now by the sirens.

We are under high alert here.

We were due to have a Moving Sale at 8:00 a.m. I don't think anybody will be coming by.

Karl Rove is here, for one, from the mainland. He was a keynote speaker last night at a local G.O.P. fundraiser.

All Oahua beached are CLOSED.

"EWA BEACH, Hawaii -- A tsunami warning was in effect for Hawaii Saturday following a massive earthquake that struck central Chile.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also issued a tsunami advisory for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal area from Kodiak to Attu islands.

The first waves were expected to arrive in Hawaii at 11:19 a.m. Saturday (4:19 p.m. EST).

The center said a tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the Hawaii. It said a tsunami in California and Alaska was possible.

The Ewa Beach, Hawaii-based center called for "urgent action to protect lives and property" in Hawaii, which is among 53 nations and territories subject to tsunami warnings.

"The main thing is we want everyone to take this event seriously," said Charles McCreery, director of the center.

McCreery said he didn't know how big the waves will be, but he expected them to be the largest to hit Hawaii since 1964.

If coastal areas are evacuated, visitors in Waikiki would be moved to higher floors in their hotels, rather than moved out of the tourist district, which could cause gridlock.

"We've got a lot of things going for us," McCreery said. "We have a reasonable lead time. The evacuation should all take place during daylight hours, and wave impact should be during daylight hours.

"We should be able to alert everyone in harm's way to move out of the evacuation zones."

God. Just read about the 8.8 in Chile!!!

Get the hell out of there!!! We can wait!!!
Dang. I hope you are well. Be safe. That's an order.
Deborah, take care... and let us know that you are "ok" please.
Holy canoli! Be careful!

Will be thinking of you and yours.
Good luck with the tsunami. Hope you're safely upland.
Not to make light of your scenario by any means, but this is an incredible event. Never before has an area with a high level of communications technology and coastal topography been given this kind of advanced notice of a potential impending natural event. It gives the residents time to seek higher ground while allowing local news outlets a chance to set up in safe, strategic locations.

I hope that you and your family are in no danger. I know where I'll be at 11:19am (Hawaii), 4:19pm (EST) - glued to CNN.
Sending good energy, love and strength to you and yours.
Deborah, again, I hope you are in a good place, without fear of problems. And I hope they get everyone evacuated safely.

At least with the buoys doing their job, there's some warning.
I must admit though I did have some unkind thoughts about Karl Rove though.
Thanks. We live higher up, near Camp Smith [Military Area] so no waves will reach us. We will just be affected by gridlock, possible loss of electricity, some panic and cancellations.
Positive thoughts heading your way.
Take care.

Curious question: Will surfers try to head to the beach?
Deborah, we would ordinarily be arriving there this weekend, but aren't. It's been breaking my heart not to be there, and then I heard about the tsunami warning and said something I never thought I'd ever say, that I was glad not to be in Hawaii.

I've been monitoring the live beach cam on Waikiki all morning: Live Beach Cam on Waikiki

Stay safe, and keep us posted. Amazing that we would be there were it not for my husband's broken arm.
terrifying...awesome yet terrifying. Stay safe, for heaven's sake
Deborah, they're saying waves of maybe three feet in certain areas of Hawaii. The biggest impact is expected to be near Hilo and Kahului. I've been posting and monitoring the civil defense evacuation zones on the NOAA hazard map, which you can access here: Tsunami Evacuation Zones for State of Hawaii
Odette: I knew you'd feel that way about Mr. Rove. :)

Kathy: you were coming without letting me know?!
Deborah, we have timeshare on Maui for a month, the month of March, every other year in the even years, but can't make it because of my husband's broken arm (and everything else), so no, weren't coming. Place is sitting empty. Might yet get there this month. Usually we spend a couple of nights at the Moana Surfrider before going to Maui.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all there, Deborah. Apparently you are on high ground, and I'm glad of that. Hopefully everyone will get safely to high ground, and more hopefully, that it won't be as devastating as the fears are.
When I loved on Maui we had a tsunami scare and everyone had to evacuate up the hill to the high school. Turned into (surprise!) an impromptu party as everyone waited around for the waves to come (they didn't). What struck me the most about the experience, at least initially was the sirens themselves. I couldn't help but look in the sky expecting to see bombers!

The police took the whole thing very seriously. A few waded into the surf with guns ablazing, forcing a few surfers who were hoping to ride the ultimate big one out of the water.

Not the best Saturday for a garage sale, but at least you're on high ground.
Here's the Hawaii Civil Defense website. Hilo airport was closed first thing this morning: Hawaii Civil Defense
Had a dream that the city of Santa Barbara needed to evacuate due to massive flooding, tsunami at about 5:00 am cental standard time. Wierd I know...be safe.
How elevated are you, Deborah? Above sea level, Imean.

And thanks so much for doing this! We're linking to you from the cover of Salon!
We're 1,000 feet above sea level so we are safe. We can actually look down on the highways and see how traffic is going.

You're welcome, Kerry!
Please be careful!!!!!
Monitoring KITV live online for evacuation updates out of Honolulu. Many Foodland and other grocery store closings, too: KITV Live Evacuation Updates Video

"He came back with milk, breakfast food, hamburger buns ???. "

The breakfast of champions!! :)

So, here's hoping in just a few minutes ... it turns out to be nothing but a high tide situation.
Report: Buoy, 140 NM Southeast of Honolulu, Hawaii just had 2 waves of 20 feet http://is.gd/9l0Us
Walkaway - evidently out in the open sea a tsunami is likely just a biggish wave. The problem comes when the big wave hits shallow water, near the islands, and the water starts to pile up...

Yes, ships must be moved at least a mile off shore to avoid wreckage which only occurs if they were near shore to be battered.

They've closed the highway near Waikiki.
First waves just hitting Hilo, approximately 3 feet, bottom of Hilo Bay initially pulled out, exposed, now filling.
I've been to that leper colony in Molokai, Lisa. It's a place everyone should visit sometime in their life if they have the opportunity.
4-5 foot surges now reported in Kahului Harbor, Maui, according to Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
Got my floaties on!

Rated.
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has apparently said that Hawaii "dodged a bullet," and it will be at least another hour before they are willing to give the all-clear.
Deborah, I was out all day and came home not knowing anything. my friend from maui is here and he had to make sure his three grown kids and all our friends move upland. Is it over now? Not according to john. Waiting for the all-clear. Keep safe. Thank you for the live update, and for injecting lots of humor...wow.
I'm glad the governor is safe though. Dodge a bullet. Love it when the weather guy says that, "Hawaii dodge a bullet!!" good for them!! ;)

Glad you're okay too!! ;)
Deborah: Wishing you safety etc. Please, keep us posted.
Of course, now we have to hear for days and days how Hawaii 'dodged a bullet.' But I am very glad all is okay. whew.

Is it my imagination or does the news media look slightly disappointed every time they say "dodged a bullet."
Yes, they do look disappointed we dodged a bullet. Every time a talking point gets adopted and passed around, I want to poke my eyes out with a sharp pencil.

I'm jest saying. It was a crazy day. The moving sale continues tomorrow, maybe people under 65 will show up! I'm not leaving Hawaii until June so I can still be an intrepid reporter from here if anything else happens, like killer whales going after surfers?
We bought beer and went to the beach here to watch the tsunami but apparantly they canceled it in Mexico.......

(great post! And we'll be on Maui for a month or two starting mid-April, first time.)
Bonnie: You can get the broken camping lantern for FREE with the $600.00 black leather couch! How's that for a deal? [It's raining today so I suspect we'll only see the The Greatest Generation out again.]
