I like to tell anecdotes when I write on Easy Fiend -- tales that flow through a beginning, middle and end. But I haven't written much lately because I haven't been seeing the poetry that flows through life that allows me to turn it into stories; I've just… Read full post »
My friend Pete is a hippy surfer. We first met when I was living Down Under. He was fresh from a divorce and suddenly had a bunch of free time on his hands. I was an advertising art director desperately in need of a little soul. We became best/… Read full post »

I think I was nine when I came up with Alumanum (sic) Man. Like many guys, I spent my boyhood deeply immersed in various fantasies worlds, be they filled with superheroes, space ships or Godzilla. Unlike most guys, I never really moved past that.

I was reading Wine Enthusiast Magazine's 100 Top Wines issue the other day. (Don't we all?) Of special interest were the goofy "flavors" that the experts use to describe the wines, such as candied pineapple, layers of white currants and dark resin. Wine tasting is a noble endea… Read full post »

On a pleasant spring night in 1997, at the National Theatre in Melbourne, Australia, I experienced the most humiliating moment of my life under the withering gaze of the bastard James Ellroy.
Until this weekend, in all the hundreds of hours I'd flown, I'd never once read the SkyMall catalogue tucked between the inflight magazine and the barf bag in my seat pocket. I had, however, read SkyMaul, a parody of the publication created by my friend Rob's&nbs… Read full post »
My friend Denise has a gift for writing unintentional double entendres on her Facebook status updates. Her best one so far has been:
"Denise is gonna do some mounting when she gets home ... before going to photo class tonight."
Although she caught all kinds of crap for that,

Holding a contest like this was a lot more stressful than I thought it would be. So many people put so much thought into their answers. There were several good responses on my regular blog, but the readers here at Open Salon absolutely went bananas. Tolstoy needed Napoleon … Read full post »

My daughter is on a big Betty and Veronica kick lately. I'm ecstatic about this because it's finally something I can identify with. I've always liked Archie and actually dressed as Jughead for my sixth halloween, between Batman and Darth Vader. My mom made me a little jugh… Read full post »

Last night, I passed my neighbor Colleen's house on my regular Bruce the Dog walk. She was checking her mail as her little, white, cotton-ball dog, Salem, yapped beside her. Her garage was open and I couldn't help but notice that she owned two identical silver BMWs -- or a… Read full post »

Mary Lambert, who is attached to direct High Midnight, my Treasure Entertainment-optioned script, talked to MTV about the project the other day. Here's part of what she said. … Read full post »
I had one of my fancy Hollywood meetings yesterday. To
my surprise, the producer actually wanted to come out to my
neighborhood and have a couple beers. He had a soft spot for
Manhattan Beach, so I suggested the Manhattan Beach Brewing
Company.
A couple days ago, I wrote about a drunken Halloween bacchanalia we threw while living in Australia. Below, please find the invitation for that party. I'll be the first to admit that it's flouncy, long-winded and blatantly Tom Robbinsesque, but I challenge you to find a more/… Read full post »
In our third year living in Australia, we decided to
introduce our Melbourne friends to Halloween, a holiday both
Sandie and I take very seriously. Generally, the best way to
introduce anything to an Australian is with alcohol, so we
threw a pagan themed "bacchanalia." Sandie dresse… Read full post »
Rob Baedeker is a member of Kasper Hauser, a successful Bay Area comedy quartet. Before that, he was a teacher. Before that, he went to Stanford and before that, we went to Laguna Hills High School together.
We were pretty tight back in the day, but we drifted apart noneth
