Although I'm not a usual celeb groupy kind of person, I've been doing just a bit of following of the Lindsay Lohan saga. It is from my perspective as a mom of an addict and a family member who knows what it is like to love an addict and live the constant drama of what that brings, that I am commenting. Believe me when I tell you that Lindsay doesn't have the market on drama just because she is supposedly a celebrity. Ask anyone wo lives amidst the chaos of addiction and they will agree.
So, she's aligning herself with Mr. Shapiro. Well, putting my opinions aside about his choice of defendants, let's look at this as a "possibility" for Ms Lohan. This is a man who knows a little about each player in this drama. Being a dad of an addict, he can identify with her dad. I'm sure his son was quite entitled and in the limelight taking into consideration who his father was, so he understands now how that can take its toll on a young one. But most importantly, after losing his son to this deadly disease, he must understand the importance of responsibility and consequences. He also must understand the urgency of the situation. When those in recovery say "one day at a time" they really mean it. They know anything can happen any time any day. Right now, Lindsay is alive and about to face some consequences. This is good. Does she need prison? I'm not so sure. Does she need rehab? Not a short rehab. She could benefit from a long term rehab. It seems that the 90 day prison sentence is just prolonging her recovery. Why not add the 90 days to the already imposed 90 day rehab. If she were to embrace a program and work it hard for 180 days there would be a good chance that we would see a new and improved Lindsay at the other end. She will learn to be stronger and deal with her over the top parents and maybe learn to remove herself from situations that are toxic to her. She's alive now. She still has a chance.
I felt this way about my son for a long time. He finally entered a long term rehab, and not without bumps in the road, he emerged a kinder and gentler person, someone who will be an asset to our world. It is the chance of a life time and I hope Lindsay takes it.
(For clarification, I know that Ms Lohan must do the 90 day rehab, but there is a difference between doing the time and embracing/working the program. So, let's say I hope she "embraces" this chance of a lifetime.)
