A Brilliant OS Writer Has Died - Sang Lee

One of my favorite OS writers, Sang Lee, passed away yesterday. He was only 43.

I hate that the world lost such a promising, creative, talent.

Sang’s writings were the kind I looked forward to reading. His style was personal, vulnerable, and yet whimsical at times. I loved how he could weave a story.

I met Sang through his article titled, “In the Air Tonight...”

The next piece that captivated me was, “One Step Beyond...”

Then came “Black Water” and “Fire Dreams.”

These pieces convinced me that Sang was going to affect the writing world with beauty and good. He surely accomplished that for me.

His best friend, Charles Bivona, has told me that Sang’s work will not be lost. Charles is going to attempt to publish Sang’s writing - one way or another.

Sang’s blog here at OS was titled, “Yellow Son - The Western Thoughts of an Eastern Mind.” I regret never knowing him better than the brief interactions on his blog.

I hope you’ll read his few precious articles posted here. Perhaps leave a comment on his most recent post in his memory.

He was a brilliant and gifted writer and artist. His passing makes the frequent dustups at OS seem pretty meaningless compared to how we can encourage the best in one another with our talents.

Rest in peace Sang Yoon Lee. I will miss you.

For those interested on knowing more about this incredible artist, his personal offsite blog can be found at http://yellowson.org/

Thanks I'll go check out his blog. So sorry that he died so young.
How incredibly sad.
I appreciate the notice and am off to read more.
My condolences, Dennis.
Dennis,

As always, your spirit leads the way to another great spirit. Thank you for this kind and beautiful note. I am going now. ::love:: to all.
How sad. I haven't read his work but will today. You are so right that we need to remember what is important in life, and how fragile it is. I'm sorry you lost your frined, for I know OS friends are as real as any.
My thoughts are with Sang's family and friends and with you, Dennis as you remind us all the special talents undiscovered and of how fleeting this life is.
Dennis, what tragic news. My sympathy goes out to you and his other friends, as well as his family.
Thanks for this Dennis. Any recommendation from you is one worth looking into. How sad...he was terribly young.
Wow - so sad. I too had never read him, but will certainly check him out. With all the shouting from the rooftops of how people go undiscovered, EPs and covers - it makes you wonder if there wasn't all that gibberish clogging the feed, maybe more of us would have found him. I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend.
Very sad. I hope his friend, Charles can get his writing published.
I wasn't familiar with him but it's very sad for anyone to pass at 45. I'll check out his work.
Dennis,
One of my favorite poems about a life lost too soon is by Raymond Carver.
Late Fragment
And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

I hope that your friend knew he was beloved. I am sorry for your loss. And now off to read what he has left to us.
His passing makes the frequent dustups at OS seem pretty meaningless compared to how we can encourage the best in one another...

I couldn't add a thing to that.
Dennis, I will check out his blog. Thanks for the message, I am sorry for your sadness.
Thank you, Dennis. I will read his work.
Thanks for posting this. I will revisit his posts and hope for peace for his friends and family.
Sadness. Now I go to read.
thanks for letting us know. how very sad. i'll look forward to reading his posts. his writing will live on.
A lovely eulogy, Dennis, and thanx for providing links to some of Sang's work. It's comforting to know how close this community can be in times such as this. I'm new here, but already I'm glad I'm here.
Gratefully, he was here so that we could know him in some small way. I have not come across Sang before, and sadly I will not have the ongoing pleasure. But I will go read his work, and honor him by remembering that he was here.

As a writer I know that as long as my words have life, so do I. Sang's words remain, and so does he.

Rated. I am so very sorry for our loss, Dennis. Thanks for letting us know.
Although I didn't know him, Sang Lee sounds like a beautiful person. Condolences to his family, his friends, and to you.
I am sorry, too. I have not read him either....but I shall.
How very sad. I will check out his stories right now.
How very sad. I will check out his stories right now.
Sadly, I had not run across him or his work, Dennis. Thank you for this tribute.
So sad. Thanks for alerting us to Sang Lee's work. I'm checking it out now.
Thank you for passing this on. I will read his work, in his memory.
Good God, it seems so early to go and with all that fine writing yet to be...
Damn. How did I miss this guy? Gifted, just gifted.
Dennis, I have to thank you doubly. I have just read his work and it is a gift. It must have been beautiful before, but now that he is gone, it is transcendent. Thank you for letting me share some of this.
I hope to be back to read his work. What a loss to us all . . .

Thank you for letting us know.
I loved Sang Lee's work. It had a rare combination of delicacy and power--a sort of grace. I mourn his passing and will miss his work. You're a good friend for doing this, Dennis.
He was brilliant...I loved his work...my love to Charles....xox
Thank you. Will read his blog. Very sorry to hear it.
He was forty-three. I knew him for almost 14 years. If he knew that you described his style as "personal, vulnerable, and yet whimsical at times," he would take a drag on his cigarette, smile, and say: wow.

That was Sang.

Thank you for this post.
This is very sad. The last thing the world needs to lose is a talented writer. Please accept my condolences.
I was not aware of his posts, so I am glad you linked them. OS is a large community, and as such it has lost several talented and valued members. Requiscat in pace, Sang Lee.
I'm very sorry to hear this. It's great that such a special writer has Charles to carry on with the publicizing of his work. Condolences to those that knew him.
He seems an amazing and talented person. It's so sad that he died at such a young age. I'll go check out his blog.
This is so very sad. I liked him very much. What a tremendous loss.
I went and read the man and have to echo what others have said, which is to wonder how many other such writers are similarly overlooked here. Then I have to remember that there is only so much time in a day and that OpenSalon continues to grow its membership. How I wish I had known of Sang Lee's work to comment favorably in a timely fashion.
Dennis it is always sad to lose someone who has such a profound effect on us.
I would be a hypocrite if I were to sing his praises as I never heard of him until now. In that, I mean that I respect and thank you for your tribute to someone whom you respected and admired. Who of us, were we able to return after death, would not appreciate that?
The heart of the matter is that your loss is our loss, Dennis and I grieve with you even though I didn't know Sang or his writing (will head there now.) Thank you for putting the fragile and delicate nature of life and death into such an eloquent but sad reminder and reminding us all how quickly things change. xoxo
I just read "Black Water"...unbelieveably moving and beautiful...thank you for letting us to him...a part of me feels sad that I found him "too late" but another part says it's okay...he's still here.
What a tragedy. Dennis, thank you for making us aware of this and thank you for the links. I'm so very sorry.
What sad news. I only became aquainted with his writing today but he had such a talented voice. Thanks for letting us know, Dennis.
Now I have to go on a rampage, Dennis. I loved your post. I loved that you took the time to honor a TRULY GIFTED WRITER AND HUMAN BEING whose life was cut so ridiculously short by his unexpected and untimely death. You took the time to honor him and praise his beautiful, incredible writing and share the work of a writer and human being who went largely unnoticed here.
So why am I all up in arms? Because you did the right thing. You were moved and touched by someone whose work mattered to you as much as his life did. While he was still living, you had discovered him and were there to encourage him in your own thoughtful, quiet inimitable way. It doesn't surprise me in the least that you honored him in his death with equal eloquence.
Nearly nine hours and 50 ratings later, guess what? So many people commenting here how sorry they are and what a tragedy Sang's death is. Promises made left and right to "go and check out his work". Reality check. I just read Sang's entire (too small) archives and few people bothered to take the time to acknowledge this man's incredible writing. Few ratings and even fewer comments on any of his exquisite essays that make you think and feel.
Sang must be shaking his head at the hypocrisy of human behavior when what he left behind was such exquisite writing with important lessons. And yet, even after he died, perhaps only a handful of people even bothered to find out what this man had to say.
It breaks my heart.
Finally had a quiet moment. Thank you for pointing us over there . . . what a writer! What a person. What a loss.
Thank you Dennis. I know it's not about you, but I've been drawn to your banner coda Beágan agus a rá go maith "Say little, but say it well."

You've done that here in honoring both Sang Lee and Charles Bivona--the living and the dead, with which all too often have to endure. You've written a beautiful eulogy, and Bivona's love for his friend is heartbreaking.

Thank you for this beautiful passion, distilled yet encompassing. From what I've read, Lee was a master at it too.

Ní neart go cur le chéile. Bail ó Dhia is Mhuire duit.
Dennis,
Yes, it does make the small dustups here at OS inconsequential.
Thank you for calling my attention to his writing.
Stephanie
This is so sad. I will definitely read his posts and am sorry that I didn't know of him while he was here.
I want to express my gratitude for the many gracious and sympathetic comments left on this post. The response of this community has been deeply moving.

Since this post was dedicated to the brilliance of the late Sang Lee, rather than addressing each comment individually, please allow me to simply say thank you, with all my heart, for honoring the memory of gifted artist and one whom this community will surely miss.
will read him now. thanks Dennis
Words are never enough and there are never enough words when someone dies. Thank you for reminding some of us about him, and giving him as a gift to the rest of us. I, like many others, only wish I could have given something to him... a nod, a smile, encouragement...something.

I am sure he would hope we all read what meant so much to him. So I will do that at least.

Thank you for writing this concise and lovely memorial piece.
I am quite new to OS, and one of the first bloggers I read on OS happened to be Sang Lee. His writings touched me. I suddenly just remembered his piece on his grandmother's death, and did a search to find his blog and articles using "Yellow Son", and I found this post with the shocking news. Thank you for letting us know.
