Banning words: let's not

Rate: 4 Flag

I was listening to the radio on the way to work this morning. Apparently some groups want to ban the use of the word obese, especially when used in relation to the youth of our nation. The word is not the problem. It is a valid, descriptive term. Regrettably, I too , am considered obese.  I'm 6'-0" and weigh 250 lbs. The word used to describe my state is not the problem. Being 50 lbs to heavy is the problem. Lack of exercise is the problem. Bullying and name calling among kids is certainly not a good thing and I would never condone such. But the thought that eliminating the use of the word obese would have any effect whatsoever in solving the problem is ludicrous.

I've seen the phrase on OS once or twice before, and I strongly believe in it myself. The truth will set you free.

Dressing it up as something else doesn't help and doesn't change it. The only way to handle to truth is to to look at. Speak it's name. And own those things about yourself that are . . . true.

As a meat cutter in a small town, most of my customers are "dietarily challenged." Is that good? Is that politically correct? How big do you have to be to use the f-word?
I don't know how big, but I do know I'm big enough!
I love this post and wholeheartedly agree that 'dressing it up as something else doesn't help and doesn't change it.' Yes, words like 'fat' and 'obese' are hurtful as are any derogatory words. 'Runt' is no less hurtful to a thin person. We need to get past the finger-pointing and name-calling and stand up and address the problems at hand. Let's start with a little common compassion and understanding for one another and responsibility for ourselves and our own children and maybe the truth will be easier to speak.
That's what we've come to in this country, when medical terms are treated like 4 letter words.
Oh please, enough already. Then lets ban skinny, shirt, dumb, crazy...shall I go on?
Wow. integrity and a good reality check.
A recently acquired statement I discovered to be true along this line:
(& may cause some controversy - too bad) -
"Guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people."

Its not the word - it the actions when used together that create effect - or, affect.
