$115 Million Dollars - 7 Deadly Sins

Rate: 11 Flag

The First Baptist Church in Dallas has some ambitious plans. And I must confess, said plans make me sick to my stomach. I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian denomination. I've since seen the light, so to speak, and have nothing to do with organized 'religion', - for the most part anyway. This story is one of the reasons why.

They have committed to spending $115 million building a new sanctuary to carry them into the next century. In my opinion, this represents nothing so much as it does pride, by this definition:

pride

noun
1. a high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc.

Imagine how far that much money would go toward helping the homeless, battered women, sick children, hungry folks, etc. It is my belief this is the pinnacle of pride, the bad kind, the one that is on the list of the 7 deadly sins. Am I wrong? Should humans do this kind of thing in the name of God?  I just can't think it is right.

I have to wonder too.
There's a word for that. Sin.
Sickening. How they can take fucking lego's out of a child's hands to pay for a can of paint for the Pastors closet just pisses me off! I just don't know how much more foolishness and waste this world can afford.
Lady Miko - I so love your posts (I trust you guys had a great dinner). Thanks for stopping by.

John, and a bad case of sightlessness.

Hey Scanner, hope you're feeling well, and yes, it made me so sick this morning, it made me mad. Hence the post. Somebody's gotta say something. And I feel sorry for that little boy too, having to grow up with such nonsense. Thanks for stopping by.
This is terrible. You are absolutely right. r
Many. many, many years ago I used to attend that church with my parents, and it wasa bloated hotbed of avarice and ostentation even way back then. Whatever happened to feed the poor?

James was right -- you will know them by their fruits.
Unfortunately, organized religion is nothing but big business. I often think, if churches had to pay taxes, we could pay the national debt.

Let's put all seven up there - beyond pride- there's greed, lust, anger, gluttony, envy and sloth...I bet you can think of news stories involving so-called "men-of-God" guilty of almost all of these- all at once (ans some so-called "women of God" too!
Jimmy Swaggart, Pat Robinson, Pope Benedict, you name 'em.

The biggest scam on Earth... the Mega church.
Only my opinion, of course.
I'd be interested to know of the congregation's view. Are there any among them who are opposed or are they sheep just following along? I dare say that were there any among them who opposed and chose to leave (taking their financial support with them) better actions in the name of God would be taken.
Fay and Amanda, I couldn't agree more.

Mary Ann, thanks !!!

Chris, some probably do leave and some probably stay, keep their mouth shut and don't give . . .
It is time to tax these so-called churches. I can't believe I think the government might do a better job taking care of the poor but "faith based" efforts have obviously failed because they'd rather build hideous edifices dedicated to their arrogance and greed. Christ! Jesus even lost his cool when he saw this bullshit going on...
The same thing happened here. Driving by a large wooded land mass was a sign... "Future Home of First Baptist Church of ____". The sad thing is, that old growth oak trees were mowed down like trash and heaped up and burned. I cried... Now it's a parking lot and a massive (and I do mean massive) church. Millions of parishioners money went into that building. The church is built right in front of a very poor neighborhood with falling down houses. The only thing blocking the old ramshackle homes from the view of the new parking lot, is a very narrow wooded area. :: out of sight - out of mind::?

We may have the poor with us always, but we aren't supposed to ignore them either... Hello?

Stupidity is contagious...

Ugh. Pride indeed. And maybe a little greed. Don't know why greed popped in my head, other than they think they'll secure a better place in heaven if they build the biggest church. Really disgusting, once one mulls it over a bit.
Pretty similar to what our country does...spends millions on a new Federal Building (here in CR), while cutting funds for food stamps, unemployment, environmental programs, mental health and schools. I guess the government is "Christian" too.
Just came across this post, and I echo all the sentiments expressed herein. I became disillusioned with that church when its long-time pastor, W. A. Criswell, introduced Gerald Ford to the congregation in 1976, stating something to the effect that there could be little doubt who most represented Christian principles in that election. I always found it ironic that so many Baptists were loathe to support a Baptist for the nation's highest office.
