Friday Night Dance Party: '80s British New Wave Music

Rate: 5 Flag
I've put together a group of music videos from around 1983-85 when a lot of great music was being creating in the UK. I used to listen to these songs on a college station broadcasting from Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT: WXCI. One of the station's programs was called "The Friday Night Dance Party." For your enjoyment I have tracked down songs that were played on that program back in that time period.

Howard Jones, "What is Love?" (released November 26, 1983)

Scritti Politti, "Wood Beez"

Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "Welcome to the Pleasuredome"

Bronski Beat, "Why"

Tears for Fears, "Shout"

Depeche Mode, "Master and Servant"

Talk Talk, "It's My Life"

Ultravox, "Dancing with Tears in my Eyes"

Pet Shop Boys, "West End Girls"

Dead or Alive, "In Too Deep"

Go West, "We Close Our Eyes"

Wide Boy Awake, "Billy Hyena"

Belouis Some, "Some People"

Blancmange, "Don't Tell Me"

Kajagoogoo, "Big Apple"

Re-Flex, "The Politics of Dancing"

Modern English, "I Melt with You"

Thompson Twins, "Doctor Dream"

Murray Head, "One Night in Bangkok"

Human League, "Fascination"

A few more added here since Friday night including "Wind Power" that Elliot suggested.

Thomas Dolby, "Wind Power"

Art of Noise, "Close to the Edit"

New Order, "Blue Monday"

Psychedelic Furs, "Ghost in You"

The Smiths, "How Soon is Now?"

Vitamin Z, "Burning Flame"

you RULE. you RULE you RULE! The only additional piece I would have added would be "Windpower" by Thomas Dolby. I've got 12" singles of half of these somewhere, saw Re-Flex open for the Police (and tank) in 1983...

You MADE my night!

This is awesome. And early college has come back to slap me in the face. :) Not in a painful way, I swear.
Oh and by the by... my cd has very deep roots in New (now called First, I hear) Wave...especially Depeche Mode/Nitzer Ebb/NIN/etc... it's at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/elliotscott2 , if you feel like listening!
Elliot and Odetteroulette, thanks for the great comments. There are quite a few artists I could add to this and Thomas Dolby was on the list. I did beta testing for the Beatnik editor which Thomas Dolby has at beatnik.com. My fear was the one post would get too cumbersome with so many videos. Elliot, I'll definitely check out your web site in the a.m. as I've got to run off now! That's a great memory to have seen Re-Flex and the Police back in '83.
bump this because it rules!
Elliot, I remember your post from August, "Making Music in an Online World: The Beginning" and hearing that great song "Danger is Here." I really enjoyed listening to all 12 of your songs on the site you mentioned above! I added in several more videos since a larger number doesn't seem to create any problems loading and viewing the page.
Now you doubly made my morning, first by adding the videos (someone else remembers Vitamin Z!) and remembering my post :)

Double thanks!

- Elliot
Elliot, I made hours and hours of reel to reel recordings from WXCI's programming back then, and Vitamin Z was included in that great collection of songs. Three years ago I heard a newer version of the song on coverville.com, too:

Loved a good number of those songs! I was an MTV addict--back in the day when they actually played music --and I always had the VCR cued up to record. A few years ago I transferred all that good old stuff to DVD, and wound up with 20+ DVDs, mostly of songs from the 80s.

I can't BELIEVE you have One Night in Bangkok. Nobody even KNOWS that song anymore! :)

I would add Marc Almond, "Tears Run Rings"

Peter Schilling, "The Different Story" (OK, German, but hey, he's European at least :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovyq19v5Y94

Faith No More, "We Care A Lot" (OK, not Brits, but it really needs to be in any complete 80s list :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFEOmc8ZX6M

Jesus Jones, "Info Freako" (which we all thought was NYMPHO Freako)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FjVjt78iqk

Slade, "My Oh My" and "Run Run Away"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSZ2JZ6fw88
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHoPYLQvnQM&feature=related

The Polecats, "Make a Circuit with Me"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GA4foTap-WQ

I suppose Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" was too early (1979), but it fits style-wise.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yteMugRAc0

Jon Anderson and Vangelis, "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" (blew me away the first time I heard)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ph8hNljOXE

Hipsway, "Honey Thief" (best dancing ever in a video ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPQwCrJ7LmE

Thompson Twins, "You Take Me Up"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqbbqzwTpyM&feature=related

And....that's probably enough.

Why yes, I am a bit obsessive about the 80s, why do you ask? ;)
Christine, it's great to find another fan of this music. You have a number of songs that I hadn't heard before and I'm working my way through the list and enjoying it a lot. The Polecat's song was the only one I had tracked down on YouTube of your group. I put together an American group of videos for another post, but I'm thinking of one or two more British/European group video posts as many were not included this first time around. I'll let you know when the next post goes up. Thanks again for your super list!
John I am dying - love these. Did you ever see Human Sexual Response up at school? I'd love to see one of their videos, but I don't know if they exist at all. Or the Plastics...
Dorelle, great to see you back! I didn't see too much while in Providence--I think Flo & Eddie were the most memorable. The other bands I saw at Lupo's, I can't remember the names of at all. I missed out on many great bands and if I could go back in time I would have taken the time to see many more!
