I don't know why, but no place has rhododendra like Britain. Beautiful.
Stellaa, this week in London, gardens with snow. A college classmate of my wife's sent two photos of a freak snowfall they had a couple of days ago in London.

Steve, I imagine the temperate climate and the rain in England help these plants immensely.
Oh, I would kill for that rhodie...and the irises.....and the waterlillies....and wow....a submerged banana tree? Interesting......
onecorgilover, I could go for all of that too, plus some sunshine and warm days--it's currently snowing outside my window . . .
Beautiful. I can't wait for spring! Allergies be damned!

Yikes....you're in NYC....I feel for you guys! I wish I could send some better weather from Atlanta but it was 28 degrees this morning and raining.
Lovely, I'd like to beam to that time and place right now.
This is lovely John, and has a connection to me. My grandfather on my mother's side was an architect in London, their home was near Kew Gardens. (I wrote about him and his retirement years, and finding him here on OS in that Searching for Omar post. He was a gardener in his spare time. In fact, his row house had the distinction of being the only one in his area that was "L" shaped, the long part of the L encompassing the largest part of the backyards of 3 or 4 of his neighbors' lots. It was all a lovely garden...and where he told my mother that he often encountered English fairies that assisted him.

Beautiful series of essays, I love it.
Gardens are like a great wine, they beauty increases with years and tender loving care. Great photographs. Thanks

I really appreciate everyone's positive words on the posts!

Greg, I'm with you--I've had enough snow already and I'll gladly take the allergies.

onecorgilover, sounds like your getting more than your share of cold weather for the Atlanta area.

Lauren, beam me "over," too, Scotty!

Barry, interesting to hear that your maternal grandfather lived near Kew Gardens. What a great area to be in with an attraction like Kew so nearby. I'm glad you mentioned your superb "Searching for Omar" post. For anyone who is new to the site since it was posted it is a must read and, in my opinion, is the gold standard for an excellent post here on OS.

George, I know that weeding is the biggest task with a garden but the rewards are great.

Stacey, another one just posted a few minutes ago for your perusal and enjoyment.
Just have to make a pro-Oregon statement here and tell y'all that Rhodies in Oregon are this gorgeous. But then, we have about the same climate, so that makes sense. They grow wild up here.
Christine, what a coincidence you should mention Oregon and Rhododendrons. My maternal visited Oregon and took some photos while there of Rhododendrons. He raised a variety of them here in New York State and I remember clearly the special wooden lath structure that they grew under.
I love the first photo of the rectangular trees. This would definitely be a place I would want to visit when we do go to London. Thank you for sharing!
