My vintage '68 Mad Magazine shows how little we've learned

Rate: 15 Flag

From my archives here is a 1968 edition of Mad Magazine showing the political landscape of that year along with their idea of the perfect presidential candidate!

I bet a lot of you would take this guy over the current crop of candidates...

What's interesting to me when I look at that ensemble is the fact that two of those balloons went on to become presidents. For nearly 16 years.
This is outstanding dear!!
We ain't learned a thing....
Mad Magazine has been revived. We call it late night comedy now...
that collage is brilliant. how come designers don't come up with stuff like that anymore?
Well, as Chevalier sang, "I remember it well"
LoL! Well, why not? Alfred E. Neuman is this year's American Idol! ;)
I loved your use of the words: Vintage, and Archives. Never thought I'd hear those in conjunction with MAD magazine.

Boom!
A reminder that "the good ol' days" really weren't. Gotta love those vintage Mad's though!
I love this! Great artistry1
My dad is an artist and used to subscribe to Mad Magazine. My husband just bought him a new subscription and he was thrilled!
Back when MAD was funny and socially relevant magazine. How times change. Thanks for this post.
Oh, how one magazine cover brings faces long forgotten back to life - and with them a whole era! We lived in the making of history, didn't we? Thank you, John.

The first I recall was the Fidel Cover w his beard in Skippy PB. :)
Now this is going to give me a nightmare hahaha

'68 was the first year I could vote. I don't remember, however, voting for any of them. I think that was the election Robert Kennedy was going for before he was assasinated. Those were very strange times (as are these). Great archives you have John.
While watching the debateSaturday night, I was struck by the thought that, yet once again, 6 white males were running for the nomination for president. And I'm not saying I miss Herman Cain or Michele Bachmann, but still...isn't there anybody else?
Personally, I think Mad Magazine has been recently revived thanks to W looking so much like Alfred E. Newman (likely separated at birth), down to the tagline, "What? Me worry?"
Great stuff, but no need to use a cartoon Alfred E Newman, when you have the real thing -- Bobby Jindal. As for the current crop of Repugnuts, even Mad magazine couldn't come up with a parody so preposterous. And yet 60 million Americans -- at least -- will cast their vote for one of these clowns.
It’s incredible to look at those balloons and see how the varying political careers played out, from President to footnote.
[r] I was looking for RFK, but this was before his brief window of candidacy, so tragically put to an end. libby
